He is unsocial in character and unconventional in behavior. His reclusion can be regarded as the behavioral presentation of his alienation. Salinger also portrays many alienated characters in his The catcher in the rye and Nine stories. These alienated characters include children, adolescents and adults. They alienate themselves from dominant social culture, groups and even themselves. According to the analysis of these alienated protagonists from autobiographical and historical perspectives, the root of their alienation lies in the conflict between their searching for the ideal love and the absence of such love in the dominant society. So comparing with enjoying substantial life, Salinger's works can arouse people's interest and give more concern to their spiritual life. 展开更多

We will discuss here the tension between the reality of new media and narratological theory, and the case in point will be cinema. Our thesis is that new media have to do with illusion, basically with illusion, and only derivatively with imagination; on the contrary, the field of literature has to do with imagination, strictly with imagination, not with illusion at all. If it is so, something must be wrong with the pretence of narratology, which has literature as its basic referent, to be the adequate theoretical frame in order to understand every cultural phenomenon, especially in the case of new media. We have to insist on the distinction between illusion and imagination. In fact, most literary theorists do not bear in mind such distinction; it tends to completely disappear under the general title "fiction." To be sure, it is usually said of cinema that it is fiction, like literature, but cinema is much more than fiction, it is illusion, even if it is the illusion of a story. 展开更多

As one of the masterpieces for Don Delillo, Libra was regarded as a classic postmodern novel once after its publication. Based on Kennedy assassination, this novel mainly deals with the isolation and dissimilation feelings for the American citizens. As a representative postmodern novel, Libra's stylistic features and narrative strategies are both quite typical. This thesis will discuss its narrative angles, its narrative structure and its dialogue expressions in order to understand Libra's postmodern narrative technique. 展开更多

The experience of"The Other" has become a common one for people in the 21st century, and yet it continues to be a major problem for everyone involved. Increasingly, however, immigrants and their descendants adjust and soon participate in and with the new culture(s). At the same time, those who encounter "The Other" through the contact with immigrants, have also to adapt, to learn, and to realize considerable changes in themselves in that process. Recently, a new German novelist, Renate Ahrens, has created several major works in which she reflects on this intricate phenomenon typical of our times. The present study might well be the first critical analysis of her last two novels, Zeit der Wahrheit (Time of Truth, 2005) and Fremde Schwestern (Alienated Sisters, 2011), which prove to be outstanding and first-rate literary treatments of the theme of"The Other" in an intercultural context. As Ahrens illustrates in both novels, each individual carries a heavy baggage imposed on them by the own family history, and so in both cases the confrontation with "The Other" serves exceedingly well to break open the shell of self-isolation and self-alienation. Love finally overcomes ancient conflicts and paves the way for new integrative forces supporting the formation of the "global village" we all are really living in. 展开更多

In the female writers of "5.4" , the quantity of Ling Shuhua' s works is not large, but the achievement isn't low because of her practiced skill and acute observation. By taking the novels for example, it is a reflection on three aspects: a kind of sad feeling under the poetic charm; the contrast of backward and new thought; the concealed comment and revealed value judgment. From these contrasts, people can know the Chinese female' s true state in the transition and the writer' s skill of fiction creation. 展开更多

It may be argued that one of the recurring themes in the fiction of Toni Morrison is the problem of emotional suffering. Indeed, a line of her characters endure a series of traumatic past experiences, the consequences of which are strongly echoed in their present lives and often foreshadow their future. Thus, this article discusses some of the characteristic literary-fantastic manifestations of grief and grieving in Morrison's novels, seen as internal and external expressions of the protagonists' mental pain. First, the text outlines the major grief-generating conditions for Morrison's heroes in general, and then it focuses on the various modes in which their feelings of grief and grieving are communicated. Second, the study exposes the characters' psychological strife and the influence it exerts both on themselves and their surroundings. Third and last, the paper concludes with an attempt to establish some typical patterns of grief and grieving common to Morrison's fictional figures. In order to reflect a variety of grief-stricken individuals populating Morrison's world, the analysis examines a group of three female characters. Taken all together, the selected examples serve to exhibit the complexity of the problem in question, as well as to illustrate the different shades of human sorrow. 展开更多

He is famous for his unique writing style-iceberg theory. In this paper, the author firstly introduces the different views about Hemingway's iceberg theory among the critics. And then the author discusses the theory from the aspects of succinct words and symbolism. On the dimensions of describing scenery, portraying figures and describing psychology, Hemingway's style is seemingly rather simple and direct. On the other hand, the theme of Hemingway's works is symbolic and provides much room for thinking. Hemingway endowed his works with symbolic meanings by using the methods of pun and coda. Also, meanings of Christian symbolism are obvious in his works. Through discussion, the author refutes the critics' negative opinions towards iceberg theory. 展开更多

Ralph Ellison published many articles and speeches on various topics before and after his masterpiece Invisible Man was published. They have been collected in Shadow andAct, Going to the Territory, and The Collected Essays of Ralph Ellison (posthumously), and Shadow and Act has been selected as one of the most influential books in non-fiction with his Invisible Man in fiction which evokes more academic interests. This paper attempts to take a closer look at Ellison's literary criticism, focusing mainly on his response to the debate of "protest novel", his reconsideration of the Negro American writings, and his analysis of how the mainstream American writers, such as Mark Twain, William Faulkner, and Ernest Hemingway, deal with the racial subjects and represent them in their creation. Owing to the strong belief in the ideals of American democracy, Ellison highlights the individuality rather than the stereotyped characteristics of the Negro people, and transcends the fixed category of black and white, for all good literature tells the same story: to be true and honest. 展开更多

As a genre that expressed women's dark protests, fantasies and the fear, female Gothic was not theorized until the late 1960s, and before its theorization, this convention was adopted by many women writers in their works. Charlotte Perkins Gilman's The yellow wallpaper is one of the many examples. As the epitome of female gothic, The yellow wallpaper utilized the female gothic conventions--the grotesque symbol of yellow wallpaper, the hysteric narrative format and the archetype image of madwoman, to express women's status of her time--their repression, rebellion and quest for the "true self". 展开更多

The book impresses the reader with Showalter's groundwork to revive the interest in long-forgotten women writers in British literature history. The period from 1680 to 1730 witnessed the creation of a wealth of women's fiction that has long been ignored or dismissed by historians and literary critics. Although the women writers in question were best sellers at the time, they were still not accepted within the traditional literary categories. This paper intends to doubt the appropriateness of the term "amatory" as a description of women's writing at the time as it is not proper to entitle them as "amatory" fiction only for the reason that they adopt similar amatory plot and write fictions about love. 展开更多

The term "ontology" is used to describe the nature of reality and demarcates the parameters of existence. An understanding and description of ontology is crucial for academic pursuit as it unveils applicable realities, yet it is often disregarded. The general neglect of ontology provided three motivations for this paper: Firstly, the discussion of the ontological underpinnings in research papers is often neglected while the methodology and methods receive extensive review. Secondly, tertiary students in an academic research-writing course face tremendous difficulty to describe the philosophical ideas that support their interpretation of reality and existence. Thirdly, the philosophical underpinnings of contemporary ontological thought are further complicated by the epistemological challenges posed by the tension between modernism and postmodernism. This paper suggests the use of literature (novels) as a relativity accessible platform to initiate the development of ontological thought. Through a close reading of a sample of Dutch novels published during the last decade of the 20th century, three themes were developed to illuminate the nature of postmodem reality and establish a literary-based ontology. The following three themes were developed: reality as fragments of fiction, reality as dream of paradoxes, and reality as plethora of stories. By using literature as source, ontological thought can be developed to illuminate the extent of the realities acknowledged in research projects. 展开更多
