The novel was strictly and prudently organized by Fitzgerald, which used lots of writing techniques and skills, such as symbolism, analogy and so on. These techniques contributed to deepen theme and increase artistic appeal. In this novel, Fitzgerald portrays the real state of American society vividly in 1920s with cold attitude and subtle analysis. This is the most typical tragicomedy about the realization and vanishment of "American dream" that describes the love tragedy between Gatsby and Daisy.展开更多

He is not only a turn-of-the-century social reformer, but also an artist deeply concerned with human relationships. His famouse work--Sons and Lovers (1994), describes the process of young Paul's growth with young Lawrence's personal life as the model. The present paper, first of all, gives a brief introduction of the novel. Then the three forms of unreal love in the story are what the present paper mainly explored. Firstly, the love between Paul and his mother is a distorted love between a mother and a son. Secondly, the love between Paul and Miriam is an immature love of young people. Thirdly, the love between Paul and Clara is physical and short-lived. The three forms of love are unreal and doomed to be fruitless展开更多

This paper explores a short story "Mother" (1919) from Winesburg, Ohio and studies it from an evaluation-based perspective embracing the analysis of the artistic language and the style of the author's narration. The main focus of the study is concentrated on the genre-related issues as well as on the determining the reason why Anderson avoids the development of the given text and transforming it into the regime of a more large-scale prose. As it turns out from the analysis, Anderson elaborates a specific style of narration and creates the form that can be characterized as the mode of "epic sketch". Anderson favors to use much smaller meter and scope, and that choice serves the writer's purpose to describe the psychological portrait of one of the characters of the above-mentioned short story.展开更多

They filled the frozen immensities of the Arctic with a number of omnipresent ghosts and spirits. In its shamanic-religious dimension, the Dorset art (circa 1000 B.C. to circa 1000 A.D.), stemming from a culture moulded by shamanic practices and burial rites, kept memory of the Times of Origins, shaped a very rich symbolic universe, suggested, and outsourced the secret correspondences between the micro and macro cosmos. The present paper investigates the thigh correspondence and relationship between the Inuit-Dorset shamanic view of the world and their miniaturized art.展开更多

In addition to the verbal representation of artworks, there is an entire system of commentary, interpretation, and criticism of art. The references to visual art appear explicitly as ekphrases which splice the narrative time and again. The unique nature of ekphrasis in The Map and the Territory lies in its representation of art devoid of an origin in the real wodd; for the paintings in The Map and the Territory do not exist in reality but are pure literary paintings, in the full meaning of the word, as the artworks mentioned in the story have an existence restricted to Houellebecq's novel. The article analyses the ekphrases in The Map and the Territory and argues that they are a virtual visuality mediated by words, employing solely the technique of ekphrasis as an enhancer of meanings in a text and thereby foregrounding its artifice. It further argues that the ekphrases are open to a field of interpretive possibilities by contemporary society, as every ekphrasis features within it subversion and a contemplation on contemporary reality展开更多

His first English novel, The Real Life of Sebastian Knight, which inherits certain aesthetic motifs of his Russian works, such as the artist in exile, the motif of the double, and the theme of the other world, has attracted the academic circle and received extreme views spreading between the good and the bad. But the core question in the whole of Nabokov scholarship is the ambiguous identities of the novel's two heroes, Sebastian and V. who are half-brothers. It is the identity puzzle that makes this novel more and more popular in Nabokov criticism. This essay attempts to review past reviews concerning this problem and analyze the four interpretations occa- sioned by the identity puzzle in Nabokov criticism.展开更多

Due attention should be drawn to this super-genre absorbing varied subject matter. This paper looks into creative nonfiction as a form of art with a let-its-hair-down attitude generally in line with the genre. Creative nonfiction is held to be a paradoxically generic term covering subcategories such as memoir, biography, autobiography, history, and journalism. Instead of being walled off from one another, these subcategories mix and match to build up a work of truth, or rather elusive truth, which might sound stranger than fiction. In addition to the imaginative mix and match to open up new possibilities for writing, felicity of style is another add-on to doing it well. Hence creative nonfiction is conceived as an adventure to wrap up a somewhat strange story in a serendipitous form as well as a felicitous language. Hopefully, this three- quarter profile of the genre will be able to offer a thin slice of the picture to the audience.展开更多
