The Shadow Lines as a Post Modem Novel

Amitav Ghosh is one the most remarkable writers of the postmodernism era. He excelled in this era with his trend of magic realism. The Shadow Lines is a story told by a nameless narrator in recollection. It＇s a non linear tale told as if putting together the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle in the memory of the narrator. This style of writing is both unique and captivating; unfolding ideas together as time and space coalesce and helping the narrator understand his past better. Revolving around the theme of nationalism in an increasingly globalized world, Ghosh questions the real meaning of political freedom and the borders which virtually seem to both establish and separate. The novel traverses through almost seventy years through the memories of people, which the narrator recollects and narrates, giving their viewpoint along with his own. Though the novel is based largely in Kolkata, Dhaka, and London, it seems to echo the sentiments of whole Southeast Asia, with lucid overtones of Independence and the pangs of Partition.

Ralph Ellison＇s Literary Criticism

Ralph Ellison published many articles and speeches on various topics before and after his masterpiece Invisible Man was published. They have been collected in Shadow andAct, Going to the Territory, and The Collected Essays of Ralph Ellison （posthumously）, and Shadow and Act has been selected as one of the most influential books in non-fiction with his Invisible Man in fiction which evokes more academic interests. This paper attempts to take a closer look at Ellison＇s literary criticism, focusing mainly on his response to the debate of ＂protest novel＂, his reconsideration of the Negro American writings, and his analysis of how the mainstream American writers, such as Mark Twain, William Faulkner, and Ernest Hemingway, deal with the racial subjects and represent them in their creation. Owing to the strong belief in the ideals of American democracy, Ellison highlights the individuality rather than the stereotyped characteristics of the Negro people, and transcends the fixed category of black and white, for all good literature tells the same story： to be true and honest.

NSAID-induced deleterious effects on the proximal and mid small bowel in seronegative spondyloarthropathy patients

AIM:To investigate the small bowel of seronegative spondyloarthropathy(SpA) patients in order to ascertain the presence of mucosal lesions.METHODS:Between January 2008 and June 2010,54 consecutive patients were enrolled and submitted to avideo capsule endoscopy(VCE) examination.Historyand demographic data were taken,as well as the history of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug(NSAID) consumption.After reading each VCE recording,a capsule endoscopy scoring index for small bowel mucosal inflammatory change(Lewis score) was calculated.Statistical analysis of the data was performed.RESULTS:The Lewis score for the whole cohort was 397.73.It was higher in the NSAID consumption subgroup(P = 0.036).The difference in Lewis score between NSAID users and non-users was reproduced for the first and second proximal tertiles of the small bowel,but not for its distal third(P values of 0.036,0.001 and 0.18,respectively).There was no statistical significant difference between the groups with regard to age or sex of the patients.CONCLUSION:The intestinal inflammatory involvement of SpA patients is more prominent in NSAID users for the proximal/mid small bowel,but not for its distal part.

Calf Thymus DNA Intercalation by Anionic Ru（Ⅲ） Complexes Containing Tridentate Schiff Bases Derived from 5-X-Substituted Salicyladehyde and 2-Aminophenol

Sodium bis[N-2-oxyphenyl-5-substituted-salicylideneiminato-ONO]ruthenate（Ⅲ） hemitriethylamine compounds of general formula Na[Ru（N-R-5-X-salim）2]＇0.5Et3N, where, R = C6H40, X = El, Br, NO2, salim = salicylideneiminato, Et3N triethylamine, were synthesized and characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, MALDI-TOF （matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization/time-of-flight） mass spectra, IH NMR （nuclear magnetic resonance）, electronic spectra and cyclic voltammograms. Ru（Ⅲ） is chelated with two O2N anionic tridentate Schiff bases derived from 5-X-salicyladehyde and 2-aminophenol. Spectroscopic titrations of the Ru（Ⅲ） compounds with CT DNA （calf thymus DNA） in the LMCT （ligand metal charge transfer） region have shown moderate intercalation properties of compounds with binding constants KD = 2.06-3.85 × 104 Ml. Electrochemical evidence of intercalative mode of binding is based on the decrease of current and shift of anodic and cathodic peaks towards higher values of potential with IxL-increment of CT DNA in Ru（Ⅲ） compound solution.

Efficacy evaluation and influencing factors analysis of combined estrogen in the treatment of labial adhesion in children

In the present study, we aimed to assess the effect of combined estrogen cream on young girls’ labial adhesions, and to identify the possible factors affecting the treatment outcome. We retrospectively included 123 children with labial adhesions.Variables were collected, including treatment outcomes, conjugated estrogen usage, and dosage, whether it was combined with manual or surgical separation, whether to use erythromycin, and whether to be accompanied with vulvitis. Chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, and t-test were used to analyze the correlation between influencing factors and treatment outcome in univariate analysis.We used logistic regression analysis to explore the key influencing factors. The use of conjugated estrogen in combination with manual or surgical separation(P = 0.001), and the degree of labial adhesions(P = 0.011) had significant effects on the final treatment outcome.The frequency of conjugated estrogen treatment, whether erythromycin was used in combination during treatment, and whether the children were accompanied by vulvitis had no significant effect on the treatment outcome(P > 0.05). After the logistic regression,we found that whether it was combined with manual or surgical separation(P = 0.000, OR = 0.078, 95% CI = 0.030–0.203), and the degree of labial adhesions in children(P = 0.003, OR = 5.324, 95% CI = 1.767–16.041) were independently related to the effect of conjugated estrogen treatment. The therapeutic effect of conjugated estrogen alone was better for mild adhesion. However,severe adhesions need to consider with manual or surgical separation in combination with conjugated estrogen treatment. It is not recommended to combine erythromycin with routine clinical treatment. Conjugated estrogen once a day can also achieve a good therapeutic effect.

Multi-central Clinical Research into Treating 80 Cases of Chronic Thrombocytopenia with Qi-supplementing and Yin-nourishing Therapy and Western Medicine

Objective: To probe the effects of qi-supplementing and yin-nourishing therapy (blood-increasing decoction and blood generating powder) on chronic thrombocytopenia. Methods: Two hundred patients with chronic thrombocytopenia were randomly divided into control (n=100) and test groups (n = 100) with Amino-polypeptide as a basic treatment for both. Test group patients consumed a blood-increasing decoction and blood-generating powder for 1-3 months. Improvements in platelet counts and TCM syndrome were observed. Results: One hundred and sixty-four (80 in the test group and 84 in the control group) of 189 total participants were treated for 3 months. The total effective rate in improving TCM syndrome was 95.00% in the test group and 79.76% in the control group (P<0.05). There was significant difference (P<0.05) in the accumulated score of TCM syndrome between the two groups treated at different time points. The total effective rate of platelet counts was 86.25% in the test group and 59.52% in the control group (P<0.05). There was a significant difference in platelet counts before and after treatment in the two groups (P<0.05). There was no significant differences in platelet count between the two groups treated for 1-2 months; however, a significant difference was found between the two groups after treatment for 3 months (P<0.05). Conclusions: After a 3-month treatment of chronic thrombocytopenia patients with qi-supplementing and yin-nourishing therapy, TCM syndrome was improved and platelet counts increased with no obvious side effects, and the quality of life of the participants was enhanced with noticeable long-term curative effects.

Roles of miRNA and lncRNA in triple-negative breast cancer

Triple-negative breast cancer(TNBC)is currently the most malignant subtype of breast cancer without effective targeted therapies,which makes its pathogenesis an important target for research.A growing number of studies have shown that non-coding RNA(ncRNA),including microRNA(miRNA)and long non-coding RNA(lncRNA),plays a significant role in tumorigenesis.This review summarizes the roles of miRNA and lncRNA in the progression,diagnosis,and neoadjuvant chemotherapy of TNBC.Aberrantly expressed miRNA and lncRNA are listed according to their roles.Further,it describes the multiple mechanisms that lncRNA shows for regulating gene expression in the nucleus and cytoplasm,and more importantly,describes lnc RNA-regulated TNBC progression through complete combining with miRNA at the post-transcriptional level.Focusing on miRNA and lncRNA associated with TNBC can provide new insights for early diagnosis and treatment—they can be targeted in the future as a novel anticancer target of TNBC.

Venus round trip using solar sail

Trajectory optimization and simulation is performed for Venus round trip (VeRT) mission using solar sail propulsion. Solar gravity is included but atmospheric drag and shadowing effects are neglected in the planet-centered escape and capture stages. The spacecraft starts from the Geostationary orbit (GEt) at a predetermined time to prepare a good initial condition for the Earth-Venus transfer, although the launch window is not an issue for spacecraft with solar sails. The Earth-Venus phase and the return trip are divided into three segments. Two methods are adopted to maintain the mission trajectory for the VeRT mis- sion and then compared through a numerical simulation. According to the first approach, Planet-centered and heliocentric ma- neuvers are modeled using a set of blended analytical control laws instead of the optimal control techniques. The second pro- cedure is the Direct Attitude Angle Optimization in which the attitude angles of the solar sail are adopted as the optimization variables during the heliocentric transfer. Although neither of the two methods guarantees a globally optimal trajectory, they are more efficient and will produce a near-optimal solution if employed properly. The second method has produced a better result for the minimum-time transfer of the VeRT mission demonstrating the effectiveness of the methods in the preliminary design of the complex optimal interplanetary orbit transfers.
