It is shown that this model has the ability to simulate the climate pattern of the UTT in all four seasons. The spatial correlation on the climatological distribution between the simulation and the observation is 0.92, 0.93, 0.90, and 0.93 for spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively. The first leading mode of the UTT in the simulation agrees with that in the observation, except that the simulated second leading mode corresponds to the observed first leading mode in spring. The standard deviation distribution of the simulation is also roughly consistent with the observation, with a pattern coefficient of 0.82, 0.78, 0.82, and 0.82 in spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively. The potential UTT change in the second half of the 21st century under the Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 (RCP8.5) scenario is examined. The prominent change is that the summer UTT will increase over Eurasia and decrease over the North Pacific compared with the present, indicating that the zonal thermal contrast between Asia and the North Pacific will be strengthened within the context of future global warming. The intensity of the interannual variability of the UTT over the Asian-Pacific region is also generally increased. The zonal thermal contrast between Asia and the North Pacific will tend to be enhanced in winter, concurrent with the intensified interannual variability.展开更多

In particular, there are two forms of ordered convection: embedded convection with a ladder-like pattern and that with a parallel pattern. However, there is little literature regarding these patterns. Because stratiform clouds with embedded convection are major objects for weather-modification studies, it is important to explore the formation/development and characteristic precipitation of embedded convection from the perspective of cloud and precipitation physics. In this paper, using observation data, we simulate a large-scale precipitation event in China for July 19-21, 2007, employing the mesoscale Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model (V2.2). The rainfall-related clouds are analyzed through simulation, with particular focus being given to the genesis of embedded convection, the precipitation and microphysical properties. The results show that the WRF model can simulate features of this kind of nephsystem, indicating a close relationship between convection genesis and the 500 hPa trough and low-level convergence line. In such a favorable weather situation, there are two ordered patterns of embedded con- vection in the nephsystem, one being a group of convection centers arranged at different altitudes in a ladder-like manner and the other being a group of convection centers with a parallel pattern. In the first case, rainfall also has a ladder feature, with precipitation being highest for the top convection and reducing to the base convection. This implies that the higher the convection develops, the more active the microphysics in warmand cold-cloud processes is, leading to greater precipitation; i.e. rainfall in a ladder-like distribution. In the second case, rainfall decreases step by step from south to north, with the precipitation depending strongly on the cloud-water content therein. The two patterns of embedded convection and their precipitation features and microphysics are intensively studied from a new point of view.展开更多

The performance of the ECT system was examined over a range of flow conditions. The experimental data were compared with the visual observations and existing correlations. Results indicated that the ECT system, with the linear back projection (LBP) algorithm, could be used to give an on-line qualitative image of the flow patterns. The Landweber iteration algorithm with optimal step length was implemented off-line to reconstruct high-resolution images. Then, the images were analyzed to obtain the film thickness of the annular flow. The experimental data compared well with the Nusselt's equation in low vapor velocity range, but showed an increasing deficiency with the increase of vapor velocity.展开更多

At stable conditions, the flow field properties are analyzed by comparisons with experimental data and numerical simulations using a phase lagged approach previously carried out. Regarding the stage overall performance, an excellent agreement is obtained between the numerical results (both with time lagged approach and full-annulus calculation) and the ex- periments. From the full-annnlus simulations, the change in flow pattern from peak efficiency to surge is found to be perfectly similar to that obtained from the simulations using the time lagged approach. In particular, pro- vided that the operating point is stable, the flow proves to be chorochronic. The full-annulus simulations were continued after a unique small change in the throttle law applied at the exit of the numerical domain. The mass flow, pressure ratio and efficiency then significantly drop all the more the time progresses. The simulation becomes unstable and the surge inception well underway. The path to surge is found to be due to the enlargement of the boundary layer separation on the suction side of the diffuser vanes in accordance with the conclusions drawn from the chorochronic simulations and experiments. But as the time progresses, the flow loses its chorochronic character. Stall cells rotating at around 7% of the rotor speed develop and lead to surge in around 5 revolutions.展开更多

For thatpurpose boundary layer can be modified by perforated plates with holes of specific sizes. The questions whichrise in such configuration are related to the existence of optimal size of the holes and the influence of microscalephenomena on the global flow patterns. This paper concentrates on the issue of the entrance effects on the microchannelflow. It is shown that mass flow rate is only insignificantly influenced by slip effects. Global parameterssuch as pressure difference and geometrical shape in more pronounced way alter flow behavior. In this paper weconcentrate on the numerical investigation of the microchannel flow for Kn < 0.01 and Re < 500. The channellength is finite. Hence, entrance and outlet effects on microchannel flow can be studied.展开更多
