Introduction: Undernutrition is a major cause and consequence of poor health in older people, affecting 35% of residents in care homes. Focus on Undernutrition (FoU), a dietetic service delivered by dietetic assistants uses a multifaceted approach to undernutrition management. This study aims to evaluate FoU’s impact on undernutrition outcome measures in care homes; including FoU’s influence on weight change in residents “at risk” of undernutrition, and prevalence of undernutrition and pressure ulcers (PU). Methods: A retrospective pragmatic service evaluation was undertaken using pseudonymised data collected over 13 years on weight, undernutrition risk and PU from long-stay residents’ notes before and six months after training (FoU). Results: Analysis completed on 104 homes, 4,315 residents (71.3% female; mean stay 10.8 (1-278) months) in County Durham. Following FoU a significant difference was identified for: improved rate of weight change for “at risk” residents (p 〈 0.001). Undernutrition risk significantly influenced weight change (low: B1.04 kg, E0.01 kg; moderate: B-1.79 kg, E-0.38 kg; high: B-0.83kg, E1.00 kg, Bp 〈 0.001, Ep = 0.001). Reduced undernutrition prevalence (p 〈 0.001) from 32.7% to 29.1% residents “at risk” of undernutrition (moderate: B13.1%, E8.9%; high: B19.6%, E15.9%). Nutrition screening significantly improved (B76.3%, E98.7%, p 〈 0.001), reduced prevalence PU (51%, p 〈 0.001). PU prevalence significantly increased with undernutrition severity at baseline (p 〈 0.001), but not following FoU (p = 0.233) (low: B5%, E2.3%; moderate: B6.9%, E1.6%; high: B10.5%, E3.9%). Odds of developing PU reduced 53% (OR: 0.47). B:baseline; E:evaluation; OR: odds ratio. Conclusion: These results demonstrate dietetic assistants delivering FoU significantly improves weight, undernutrition and PU prevalence in care homes. Indicating FoU is an effective model for improving undernutrition outcomes, with the potential of reducing possible harm, such as PU in care homes.展开更多

Residents' all-sided and effective participation in Tourism development process, with no doubt, is an open democratization process and an effective way to ensure sustainable development of tourism as it can raise residents' income and eliminate bad influence of tourism. "Impression-Liu Sanjie" is a scenic spot where "landscape live-action" is performed. Local residents (farmers) serve as the main part. Through survey and analysis of participation and perception of community residents, this paper aims at finding some useful consult and inspirations for the development, management and policy formulation of other rural scenic region alike.展开更多

Most geo-spatial studies regarding inter-ethnic relations are single dimensional, focusing on residential segregation assuming its association to the social domain. We argue that in the globalizing world daily activity spaces, social networks and influences on everyday life conditions are rooted in growing horizons around residential location weakening the power of residential location to dictate life conditions. Hence we suggest employing a multi-dimensional approach. Specifically, we explore the associations among residential spaces (relating to Arab residents of: purely Arab localities; mixed-Jewish-Arab cities, and Jewish cities); main activity spaces (commuters to Jewish areas and localists--people staying mostly in the Arab localities) and social integration (social networks; repertoire of identities; attitudes toward integration and knowledge of Hebrew). The data incorporate tracking the movements of 177 responders for a week (using a GPS logger) and in-depth interviews, which were analyzed quantitatively. Core findings suggest that both residential place and activity spaces affect social integration, however, the locality type has a greater affect. In addition, we identified four integration sorts according to kinds of municipality, activity spaces, and integration measures: (1) segregated localists living in Arab municipalities; (2) commuters living in Arab localities characterized by limited integration; (3) Arabs residing in Jewish cities that succeeded economically but are characterized by limited social integration, and (4) those living in mixed cities which enjoy the highest, yet limited integration level.展开更多

The lung is the most common site of injury by airborne pollutants. Acute effects, however, may also include non-respiratory signs and symptoms, which may depend upon toxicological characteristics of the substances and host-related factors. The studying of indoor air quality can provide a method for appropriate remedial action. Research suggests that SHD (Settled House Dust) may be a significant source for indoor exposure to different substances. This research study consisted of sampling dust from homes in different area codes. The dust samples were collected from August 2006 thru March 2007 and analyzed using GC/MS (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry). The purpose of this research study will display how sampling household dust is a powerful tool for identifying chemicals that contribute to poor indoor air quality.展开更多

The dietary intake of an average Hong Kong adult resident was estimated to be 0.806-0.833 pg WHO-TEQ kg^-1 b.w. d^-1 of dioxin-like compounds, lower than the tolerable daily intake introduced by WHO. The 95th percentile consumer were exposed by dietary at the level of 2.72 to 2.81 pg WHO-TEQ kg^-1 b.w. d^-1 or 81.6-84.3 pg WHO-TEQ kg^-1 b.w. month^-1 , higher than 70 pg WHO-TEQ kg t b.w. month^-1. DL-PCBs contributed 49.2% of total TEQ intake. The daily intake of indicator PCB was 2.83 ng kg^-1 b.w. d^-1. Approximately 2/3 of dietary intake of dioxin-like compounds came from sea food products. Ten brands of infant formula products were tested and the potential dietary intake of formula-fed infants of Hong Kong was estimated to be 1.46-1.58 pg WHO-TEQ kg^-1 b.w. d^-1 during 1st month and decreases afterwards.展开更多
