Nash) with the objective of formulating appropriate soil media for use in sulfide-bearing mined areas. An acidic mine site acid sulfate soil (pH 2.8) was treated with different soil conditioner formula including hydrated lime, red mud (bauxite residues), zeolitic rock powder, biosolids and a compound fertilizer. Soils treated with red mud and hydrated lime corrected soil acidity and reduced or eliminated metal toxicity enabling the establishment of vetiver grass.Although over-liming affected growth, some seedlings of vetiver survived the initial strong alkaline conditions. Addition of appropriate amounts of zeolitic rock powder also enhanced growth, but over-application caused detrimental effects. In this experiment, soil medium with the best growth performance of vetiver was 50 g of red mud, 10 g of lime, 30 g of zeolitic rock powder and 30 g of biosolids with 2000 g of mine soils (100% survival rate with the greatest biomass and number of new shoots), but adding a chemical fertilizer to this media adversely impacted plant growth. In addition, a high application rate of biosolids resulted in poorer growth of vetiver, compared to a moderate application rate.展开更多

The results indicate that the solvent extracts have been depleted in the samples with high Cu, Pb, Zn contents. This depletion occurred preferably in saturated hydrocarbons. Saturated hydrocarbons served as hydrogen donor for thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR). The GC traces of saturated hydrocarbon show that the depletion occurred mainly in long chain n alkanes.展开更多

Janus Facades was asked to inspect the facade of a fourteen storey building which had a curtainwall-clad tower and granite and tile cladding on the three storey podium. The unitised curtainwall was not well designed. It did not have adequately sized joints in accordance with industry standards to absorb seismic effects and it was never really weathertight. Most of the damage to the curtainwall was caused by the damaged structure. Damage to the structure and internal fittings was also observed.展开更多

Recently, there was a significant increase of seismic activity of the Silesian rock massive, when compared with the previous years. In the period 1999-2008 the hard coal mines experienced 34 rock bursts. The causes of rockburst occurrence are presented based on the analysis of the rockbursts occurring in the Polish hard coal mines. The scale of the rockburst hazard has been characterized with respect to the mining and geological conditions of the existing exploitation. Of the factors influencing the state of rockburst hazard, the most essential one is considered the depth interval ranging from 600 m to 900 m. The basic factors that promote the rockburst occurrence are as follows: seismogenic strata, edges and remnants, goal, faults, pillars and excessive paneling.展开更多
