AIM:To evaluate the efficacy of cola treatment for gastric phytobezoars,including diospyrobezoars.METHODS:A total of 17 patients(range:48 to 78 years) with symptomatic gastric phytobezoars treated with cola and adjuvant endoscopic therapy were reviewed.Three liters of cola lavage(10 cases) or drink(7 cases) were initially used,and then endoscopic fragmentation was done for the remnant bezoars by using a lithotripsy basket or a polypectomy snare.The overall success of dissolving a gastric phytobezoars with using three liters of cola and the clinical and endoscopic findings were compared retrospectively between four cases of complete dissolution by using only cola and 13 cases of partial dissolution with cola.RESULTS:After 3 L of cola lavage or drinking,a complete dissolution of bezoars was achieved in four patients(23.5%),while 13 cases(76.5%) were only partially dissolved.Phytobezoars(4 of 6 cases) were observed more frequently than diospyrobezoars(0 of 11) in the group that underwent complete dissolution(P = 0.006).Gender,symptom duration,size of bezoar and method of cola administration were not significantly different between the two groups.Twelve of 13 patients with residual bezoars were completely treated with a combination of cola and endoscopic fragmentation.CONCLUSION:The rate of complete dissolution with three liters of cola was 23.5%,but no case of diospyrobezoar was completely dissolved using this method.However,pretreatment with cola may be helpful and facilitate endoscopic fragmentation of gastric phytobezoars. 展开更多

The experimental result demonstrated that the hydrolytic-aerobic process could raise the biodegradability of anthraquinone dye wastewater effectively. The effects of operating parameters including flue gas temperature, feeding rate of activated carbon, polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDDs/Fs) concentration at the inlet of the air pollution control device (APCD), filter materials, pressure drop on PCDDs/Fs removal efficiency are reviewed and commented upon in this paper. Evaluation on the various mechanistic models for entrained flow adsorption is carried out based on the computational simulation in terms of the actual operating condition and theoretical analysis. Hence,it is of great interest to identify the method of achieving the best performance for big data analytics workloads running on state-of-the-art SMT( simultaneous multithreading) processors,which needs comprehensive understanding to workload characteristics. This paper chooses the Spark workloads as the representative big data analytics workloads and performs comprehensive measurements on the POWER8 platform,which supports a wide range of multithreading. The research finds that the thread assignment policy and cache contention have significant impacts on application performance. In order to identify the potential optimization method from the experiment results,this study performs micro-architecture level characterizations by means of hardware performance counters and gives implications accordingly. 展开更多

It can be noted from the results that, after mixing with clay, the adsorption rate increases rapidly with the increasing amount of the marine algae. When pH=5, the best ratio between the clay and the marine algae is 1:4 for Pb2+. The result of in situ handling of the waste water containing heavy metals shows that the average adsorption rates of heavy metal irons Cu2+, Cd2+, Pb2+ and Ni2+ are all over 70 %. 展开更多

Sewerage systems first appeared in Paris in the middle of 19th century. Even if the majority of structures are still in working order, their general state will deteriorate inexorably, and as reconstruction is not always possible for cost and social impact reasons, rehabilitation is a solution adopted by many clients. It is necessary to resort to new rehabilitation techniques. Reinforcement by bonding composite materials has many advantages compared to other techniques. The objective of the experimental campaign presented in this paper is to study the addition of a lining by means of mortar reinforced by thin composite materials so as to restore masonry structures. To that purpose, crushing tests on masonry vaults have been carried out. The application of a lining made of mortar reinforced with composite materials has allowed increasing the breaking load and delaying the occurrence of the first cracks. This article presents the characterization of the materials. Moreover, the results of the breaking tests applied to masonry vaults are shown in this paper. A comparison with a traditional type of rehabilitation by a 6 cm-thick shotcrete lining will be performed. 展开更多

Integrating multiple systems into one has become an important trend in Process Systems Engineering research field since there is strong demand from the modern industries. In this study, a stage-wise superstructurebased method is proposed to synthesize a combined mass and heat exchange network(CM&HEN) which has two parts as the mass exchange network(MEN) and heat exchange network(HEN) involved. To express the possible heat exchange requirements resulted from mass exchange operations, a so called "indistinct HEN superstructure(IHS)", which can contain the all potential matches between streams, is constructed at first. Then, a non-linear programming(NLP) mathematical model is established for the simultaneous synthesis and optimization of networks. Therein, the interaction between mass exchange and heat exchange is modeling formulated.The NLP model has later been examined using an example from literature, and the effectiveness of the proposed method has been demonstrated with the results. 展开更多

The catalytic activity of two common bacterial enzymes, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and cytochrome c oxidase (COX) from Escherichia coli was examined following bacterial exposure to microwave (MW) radiation under well-defined experimental conditions. The experiments were conducted in a specialized microwave processing apparatus, with an exposure frequency of 18 GHz, and a temperature profile that was restricted to below 40℃ to avoid thermal degradation of the bacteria. The absorbed power was calculated to be 1,500 kW/m3 and the electric field was determined to be 300 Wm. Both values were theoretically confirmed using Computer Simulation Technology (CST) Microwave Studio 3D Electromagnetic Stimulation Software. Results showed that the activity of both enzymes was increased following MW radiation compared to negative controls and thermally treated samples subjected to similar temperature profiles. It is suggested that the increase in COX and LDH enzyme activity could not be explained by conventional heating alone, but was rather a result of micro-thermal effects that incorporated 'undetectable' thermal mechanisms. 展开更多
