This article presents the outcome of the Swedish pilot study CESEM (named after the initials of the girls' first names) where pre-teen girls produced their own news program and showed it to their classmates. The methodological approach was the action research model where the process of producing news was followed from selecting news to reflecting on their learning outcomes. The knowledge from the pilot study is useful in designing active projects within the scope of media literacy. One of the learning outcomes for the girls in this study was the awareness of how news programs in TV are staged. A positive response was the initiative from one of the participating schools to start their own news project in one of the classes. A possible outcome in longer run projects is better knowledge for developing pedagogical tools in media education. 展开更多

Here the authors present a recently developed web-site http://bri-shur.com where several tools and pipelines for protein structure prediction are implemented. The prediction of a structure for a particular protein often requires a sensitive and iterative approach, and the web-site provides an environment for this kind of work. Software that is used in the services includes both free programs available in the Internet and newly developed algorithms. The service on homology screening in PDB for a structure template is implemented using an approach that is alternative to well-known BLAST algorithm and it has some advantages over BLAST. The service on homology modeling uses well-known Nest program. The service on protein energy estimate allows selecting a best template in the set of homologs and adds a functionality of fold recognition to the environment. The design of the site simplifies several of the most useful bioinformatics routines, thus making them available to a large community of researchers. Services are provided free of charge without registration, and the user's privacy is taken care of. 展开更多

Mean success rates (MSR) ... This study compares the ability of different robust regression estimators to detect and classify outliers. Well-known estimators with high breakdown points were compared using simulated data. Mean success rates (MSR) were computed and used as comparison criteria. The results showed that the least median of squares (LMS) and least trimmed squares (LTS) were the most successful methods for data that included leverage points, masking and swamping effects or critical and concentrated outliers. We recommend using LMS and LTS as diagnostic tools to classify outliers, because they remain robust even when applied to models that are heavily contaminated or that have a complicated structure of outliers. 展开更多
