Karst groundwater in the Ordovician and Cambrian Limestone aquifers is the main source of water supply. There are 527 wells in urban areas to exploit the karst groundwater, yielding up to 35 000 m^3 per day. After 1978, urbanization and industrialization of Xuzhou City have continued at a greatly accelerated pace; the population increased from 670 700 (1978) to 1 645 500 (2002), its GDP from 0.71 × 10^9 $ to 42.7× 10^9 $ and the urban area from 184 km^2 to 1,038 km^2 (built-up city area from 41.3 km^2 to 81.9 km^2). The volume of karst groundwater withdrawal increased yearly before the operation of a supply plant of surface water in 1992, from 3.85x 10^7 m^3(1978) to 1.34× 10^8 m^3 (1991) and now maintained at 0.1× 10^9 m^3 (2002). Intensive overexploitation of karst groundwater has caused a continuous descending of the piezometric level and the area of the depression cone increases year after year. These changes have increased the vulnerability of the karst groundwater system and have induced environmental problems such as depletion of water resources, water quality deterioration, groundwater contamination and karst collapse. The largest buried depth of karst groundwater is up to 100 m in the dry season in some areas, while 66 exhausted wells have been abandoned. A change in the thickness of the unsaturated zone due to the drawdown of the piezometric level has caused a change of the chemical environment which has an impact on the physical state and major chemical compositions in groundwater. The contents of Ca^2+, Mg^2+, NO3^-, SO4^2- and C1^- in karst groundwater has increased significantly, total hardness (CaCO3 content) rises annually in most pumping wells and exceeds the Standard of Drinking Water of P.R. China. Point source pollution and belt-like pollution along the rivers has caused water quality deterioration. The sudden loss of buoyant support due to rapid drawdown of the piezometric level has induced 7 karst collapses to form 17 pits and has caused an estimated US$ 10 million economic loss. These problems have influenced the quality of development in the city.展开更多

According to the dynamic characteristics of groundwater levels, some advice about groundwater exploitation is offered. Our research will provide a basis for using groundwater resources and the preven- tion of geological disasters in Jiangyin city and the Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou area. The following results are deduced from our research. First, groundwater levels vary with the exploitation of groundwater in Jiangyin city and are affected by hydrogeological conditions. The groundwater levels remained rather stable before and after the implementation of control of groundwater exploitation in the northwest of Jiangyin city along the Yangtze River. A suitable level of exploitation should be allowed. In the southeast, the speed of recovery of the groundwater level has been rather rapid after the control of exploitation. We conclude that groundwater might be exploited locally after the groundwater level has recovered. In the southwest, the speed of recovery of the groundwater level is rather slow and exploitation of ground-water should be prohibited. Second, groundwater quality is stable in Jiangyin city and the contents of the main chemical indices of groundwater varied only slightly before and after the control of exploitation. Third, after controlling the exploitation, the speed of land subsidence has clearly slowed down and the development of ground fissures has been controlled effectively.展开更多

The necessity and feasibility of such a new approach are discussed. From an ecological point of view all components of the global system, including residents living in cities, have the same right to enjoy rainwater. Therefore, urban rainwater should neither be simply drained as waste water, nor be completely harvested as a kind of resource. The objective of this new approach is to maintain the natural hydrological cycle in urban areas during urbanization. When necessary, it could also be used to regulate the amount of runoff, evaporation and infiltration in a city in order to rehabilitate the hydrological cycle given the local conditions. Three basic principles should be adopted in rainwater management, i.e., separation of rainfall from sewage, limited utilization and small and decentralized facilities. Four methods can be used for urban rainwater management: rainwater harvest, rainwater infiltration, rainwater storage and rainwater pipes. The natural hydrological cycle in urban areas could be rehabilitated through rainwater management, which is of great importance for sustainable development of our cities.展开更多

The results show that the process of urban residents improving their living standards is also a driving factor in the increase of their carbon footprints; at the same time, the progress in technology has a positive impact on reducing the carbon footprints of urban residence. This article suggests that some measures, such as promoting energy-saving buildings and central heating supply, and establishing the convenient and comfortable public transport system, should be taken to reduce the carbon footprints of residence and travel in Shijiazhuang city.展开更多

The theoretical aim of the article is to present the different approaches to conceptualization and operationalization of psychic distance. The methodological aim of the article is to show the pilot research results of quantitative research planned in future. The paper aims at presenting the results of testifying the questionnaire, especially reactions of the respondents on the level of difficulty of questions included in it. The empirical aim of the article is to present the perceptions of managers about the importance of psychic distance stimuli (differences in culture, differences in economic and political systems, as well as differences in mentality and geographic distance) in the process of Polish companies' internationalization. The paper is based on the critical literature overview and on the field research conducted on the sample of 18 Polish companies with the technique of direct interview. In the first part of the article, the research design as well as methodological issues connected with psychic distance measurement is presented. The second part of the article is dedicated to the field research results on the importance of psychic distance in the process of internationalization. The conclusions of the current stage of the research will comprise the base of complete research. The conducted research enabled the author to answer the following research questions: What is the impact of psychic distance stimuli on the process of Polish companies' internationalization (the directions and forms of internationalization, the pace and amount of countries subject to foreign expansion of Polish companies, and the value of sales and foreign capital engagement of Polish companies abroad)? What is the impact of psychic distance stimuli on managers' decisions connected with engagement on international markets (initiating business with foreign partners, leading business on international markets, and withdrawal business from international markets)? What are the factors determining perceptions of psychic distance by managers? What is the size of psychic distance among Poland and the foreign expansion markets of Polish companies? The respondents stated that the managers' perceptions about psychic distance importance in the process of companies' internationalization depend on the managers' experience in activity on international markets, the knowledge of managers about international markets, the level of education of managers, and the level of stability and changeability of environment, in which the company operates. According to the managers, the most important factors having impact on decisions connected with internationalization are: cultural differences (especially differences in religion), political differences (especially the level of democracy), geographic distance (the differences in time zones), the differences in economic systems (the level of economic development), and the differences in mentality (different way of thinking of managers). The factors having impact on companies'engagement in international markets are: the level of democracy, the level of infrastructure development, different way of thinking of managers, and differences in time zones. The managers stated that the most significant differences in cultural systems are among Poland-China, Poland-Turkey, and Poland-Romania. The most significant differences in economic systems occur among Poland and the receivers of Polish export China, Ukraine, and the United States. The biggest differences in political systems are among Poland-China, Poland-Russia Belarus, and Poland-Ukraine. According to the managers, the biggest differences in mentality occur among Poland-China, Poland-Turkey, and Poland-the United States. Geographic distance is the most important factor in Polish export to the United States, China, Turkey, and Spain. There is applied a methodology stating that psychic distance (and its stimuli) should not be measured only with the use of objective constructs and statistical data, but also with the use of subjective data, such as the responses of decision makers of companies under internationalization. The value of the article is the presentation of the application of new research tool for psychic distance measurement.展开更多

Due to rapid urban expansion and industrialization, water pollution in Zhengzhou City, the capital of Henan Province in central China has become a serious problem for its development. In this study, the surface water quality was evalu- ated using Nemerow Comprehensive Pollution Index (NCPI), and the change trend was calculated using methods of Mann-Kendall test and Sen's slope estimator, based on the monitoring data from 1998 to 2008. The results show that the NCP1 ranged from 3 to 50 in 70% of the monitoring cases, implying that most rivers were seriously polluted. However, this serious polltuon is expected to be gradually improved, as the concentration of water pollutants and NCPI declined significantly in most rivers. Water pollution in reservoirs was much lower than rivers, and the NCPI in the three monitored reservoirs was lower than 3 in most years, and shows a downward trend. Although the surface water quality was gradually improved, great efforts are still needed to enhance the protection and improvement of surface water environment.展开更多

In order to verify its potential, three collecting points of temperature and humidity were placed in an urban area close to the municipal dam. The first one was placed on the dam margin, the second one, 50 m distant of the margin and, the third one, 100 m distant. The data were taken during December 2010 and then compared to the climate data of the Climate Station of CIIAGRO-Integrated Center of Agro Meteorological. The results show that the closer the collection point is to the water body, and the lower is the temperature variation. The humidity taxes verified at the closest point to the water body indicate values higher than those ones collected at the most distant point. The insertion of moisture through the water bodies in an urban environment demonstrated to be a strategy that improved the thermal conditions and has to be considered for urban planners to establish strategies of urban occupation.展开更多

On the other hand, waterfronts are also high-risk areas, where the water-related disasters could seriously affect the long-term sustainability of urban environment. This paper focuses on the relationship of the cities with their waterfronts. It presents a case study of Wuhan--a Chinese metropolis, where waterfronts play an important role in its urban planning policy. It attempts to investigate the mechanism of waterfront transformation, and to find out which strategies to adapt and what resilience means in terms of urban waterfronts in a rapidly transforming city. This article examines some representative urban projects on the waterfront and summarizes spatial models applied on the waterfront with distinct policies. Finally, it demonstrates that an urban waterfront is an "osmotic interface" which should be more correctly envisaged as a network of places, functions, additions and hinges between the city and its water environment. It clarifies that waterfront areas represent a multidisciplinary and multitasking issue in perspective of urban resilient development.展开更多

This can be done through process changes, or by adding a finishing treatment after the process, like flotation or filtration. Wetlands are also one possibility for the finishing treatment of waste water. In Finland Wetlands have been used as a polishing treatment for municipal wastewater for approx. 20 years. Most of these are natural wetlands. Using wetlands after efficient wastewater treatment is an economical way of producing high quality treated water and cutting down the pollution load of water bodies. Wetlands have also been used in the control of diffuse pollution in agriculture and forestry.展开更多

The city construction unceasingly disturbs underground water chemical, dynamical, physical and biological field. In return, the four fields' changes also can affect the geological environment that city lived by, in other words they affect safety and stability of geological environment. Interaction of underground water and the geoenvironment directly displays in the following two ways: The first is that the underground water and the geological body transfer the energy each other; the second is that the strength balance of geological body is broken. Underground water variation brought about by city construction is the factor which cannot be neglected. Underground water variation on the one hand changes soils or rocks' physical, biological, chemical and mechanical properties, then influences the deformation and strength of geological body. On the other hand it changes its own physical, chemical properties and biochemical component. At present, from mechanics aspect, interaction between chemical field and biological field variation of the underground water and the geological body lacks research. Although interaction between them is long-term, slow, but when it compared with water-soil or water-rock interaction in the entire process of formation of rocks or soils or geologic evolution history, the qualitative change of the biological and chemical action of rocks or soils brought about by city construction is remarkable, in this paper, aiming at underground water biological field factor which is easily neglected by people, it analyzes that underground water biological field affects possible mechanism and approach of properties variation of rocks or soils in city construction, brings forward further research method and development direction have been also proposed.展开更多

Results indicate that there are 70 species of organic pollutants in the influent sample of the plant, which mainly consist of alkyls, benzene series, esters, and heteroeyclic compounds. Some of these organic pollutants are biotoxie and belong to persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Four species among them are on the list of Prior Pollutants of Environmental Protection Agency of USA (USEPA). However, 7 species of organic pollutants appearing in the effluent sample mainly include alkyls of multi-carbons and phthalate esters. The removal efficiency of phthalates is poor because of their poor biodegradability. The sewage treatment technique is effective in removing most+of organics pollutants.展开更多

文摘During the rapid industrialization and urbanization of China, urban agglomeration in river basin areas raises the problems of over-use of water resources and pollution of the water environment.Related research in China has mainly focused on the conflicts among economic growth, urban expansion and water resource shortages within admin-istrative boundaries. However, water environments are much more dependent on their physical boundaries than their administrative boundaries.Consistent with the nature of water environment, this study aims at analyzing coordination relationships between urban development and water environment changes within physical river basin boundaries. We chose the Shayinghe River Basin,China,as our case study area which is facing serious challenges related to water en-vironment protection. Then we classified 35 county-level administrative units into upstream, midstream and down-stream regions based on their physical characteristics;analyzed the coordination degree of urban agglomeration using the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method;and constructed cooperative models using the Linear Programming (LP function) to simulate four scenarios of the coordination relationship be-tween urban population increase and water environment protection based on existing water resources and water pollu-tion data. The results show that the present coordinative situation in Shayinghe River Basin is not sustainable. In gen-eral,more than 50% administrative units are in the bad coordinative situation. In particular, the downstream region is under worse condition than the upstream and midstream regions.Cooperative models in scenario analyses indicate that the population scale set in existing urban master plannings is not coordinated with the water environment protection. To reach the goal of regional sustainable development, the total population needs to be controlled such that it will re-main at 4.5×10 7 or below by 2020 given the capacity of water environment.

文摘Geological environment effects caused by the control of groundwater exploitation in Jiangyin city are discussed thoroughly, including the dynamic variation of groundwater levels and quality and the development of land sub-sidence and ground fissures. Third, after controlling the exploitation, the speed of land subsidence has clearly slowed down and the development of ground fissures has been controlled effectively.

文摘Based on an analysis of our research results and the main problems relating to urban rainwater treatment, we propose a new approach to urban rainwater management in China. The natural hydrological cycle in urban areas could be rehabilitated through rainwater management, which is of great importance for sustainable development of our cities.
文摘Assessing environmental flows (e-flows) for urban rivers is important for water resources planning and river protection, Many e-flow assessment methods have been established based on species' habitat pro- vision requirements and pollutant dilution requirements, To avoid flood risk, however, many urban rivers have been transformed into straight, trapezoidal-profiled concrete channels, leading to the disappearance of valuable species, With the construction of water pollution-control projects, pollutant inputs into rivers have been effectively controlled in some urban rivers, For these rivers, the e-flows determined by tradi- tional methods will be very small, and will consequently lead to a low priority being given to river pro- tection in future water resources allocation and management, To more effectively assess the e-flows of channelized urban rivers, we propose three e-flow degrees, according to longitudinal hydrological con- nectivity (high, medium, and low), in addition to the pollutant dilution water requirement determined by the mass-balance equation, In the high connectivity scenario, the intent is for the e-flows to maintain flow velocity, which can ensure the self-purification of rivers and reduce algal blooms; in the medium connectivity scenario, the intent is for the e-flows to permanently maintain the longitudinal hydrological connectivity of rivers that are isolated into several ponds by means of weirs, in order to ensure the exchange of material, energy, and information in rivers; and in the low connectivity scenario, the intent is for the e-flows to intermittently connect isolated ponds every few days (which is designed to further reduce e-flows), The proposed methods have been used in Shiwuli River, China, to demonstrate their effectiveness, The new methods can offer more precise and realistic e-flow results and can effectively direct the construction and management of e-flow supply projects,

文摘By using methods of carbon footprint analysis, and impacts of population, affluence and technology (IPAT), this article analyzes the carbon footprints of residence and travel, and their influential factors for different urban residential incomes, using 1,500 household questionnaires in Shijiazhuang city, Hebei province. The results show that the process of urban residents improving their living standards is also a driving factor in the increase of their carbon footprints; at the same time, the progress in technology has a positive impact on reducing the carbon footprints of urban residence. This article suggests that some measures, such as promoting energy-saving buildings and central heating supply, and establishing the convenient and comfortable public transport system, should be taken to reduce the carbon footprints of residence and travel in Shijiazhuang city.
文摘Research objectives presented in the article are of theoretical, methodological, and empirical nature. The value of the article is the presentation of the application of new research tool for psychic distance measurement.
文摘Water pollution is one of the major environmental prob- lems, especially in urban areas. Although the surface water quality was gradually improved, great efforts are still needed to enhance the protection and improvement of surface water environment.
文摘The paper aims to investigate the potential of a water body to influence in lowering the warmth in the city of Sao Jose do Rio Preto, Brazil, due to the evaporative cooling effects. The insertion of moisture through the water bodies in an urban environment demonstrated to be a strategy that improved the thermal conditions and has to be considered for urban planners to establish strategies of urban occupation.
文摘Urban waterfronts, where the land of city meets a body of water, are unique and finite resources representing the best opportunities for community enhancement and enrichment. It clarifies that waterfront areas represent a multidisciplinary and multitasking issue in perspective of urban resilient development.
文摘Studied on the law and interaction of hydrological cycle and social water circulation on the earth,it is pointed out that the water environment, water resources and water cycle are the unity of water movement. The roots of contemporary crisis are also analyzed. The strategy of water environment recovery and social water healthy cycle is proposed and applied in many cities, which has achieved good results.
文摘With the current tightening of environmental regulations of waste water treatment, there is a need for the enhancement of the treatment efficiency. Wetlands have also been used in the control of diffuse pollution in agriculture and forestry.

文摘In the process of city construction, as a comprised factor of city geological environment, underground water takes the most active part, and its dynamic change is fiercest. Although interaction between them is long-term, slow, but when it compared with water-soil or water-rock interaction in the entire process of formation of rocks or soils or geologic evolution history, the qualitative change of the biological and chemical action of rocks or soils brought about by city construction is remarkable, in this paper, aiming at underground water biological field factor which is easily neglected by people, it analyzes that underground water biological field affects possible mechanism and approach of properties variation of rocks or soils in city construction, brings forward further research method and development direction have been also proposed.
文摘Land subsidence is a complex geological phenomenon which is concerned by the researchers at home and abroad. In this paper, the observation data from Anshan Second Order Leveling during 1987-[KG-*7]-1994,combined with the area of environmental engineering geology and geological conditions analysis shows that land subsidence in Anshan City is closely related to active tectonics,Quaternary strata and groundwater exploitation.
文摘To evaluate the removal efficiency of organic pollutants in the sewage by Harbin municipal sewage treatment plant, the influent and effluent samples from the plant were pretreated by liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) under conditions of acidity, neutrality and alkaleseence in sequence, and then were analyzed by gas chromatograph-mass spectrum (GC-MS) procedures. The sewage treatment technique is effective in removing most+of organics pollutants.
