The Madden–Julian Oscillation(MJO)is a dominant mode of tropical intraseasonal variability(ISV)and has prominent impacts on the climate of the tropics and extratropics.Predicting the MJO using fully coupled clima...The Madden–Julian Oscillation(MJO)is a dominant mode of tropical intraseasonal variability(ISV)and has prominent impacts on the climate of the tropics and extratropics.Predicting the MJO using fully coupled climate system models is an interesting and important topic.This paper reports upon a recent progress in MJO ensemble prediction using the climate system model of the Beijing Climate Center,BCC-CSM1.1(m);specifically,the development of three different initialization schemes in the BCC ISV/MJO prediction system,IMPRESS.Three sets of 10-yr hindcasts were separately conducted with the three initialization schemes.The results showed that the IMPRESS is able to usefully predict the MJO,but is sensitive to the initialization scheme used and becomes better with the initialization of moisture.In addition,a new ensemble approach was developed by averaging the predictions generated from the different initialization schemes,helping to address the uncertainty in the initial values of the MJO.The ensemble-mean MJO prediction showed significant improvement,with a valid prediction length of about 20 days in terms of the different criteria,i.e.,a correlation score beyond 0.5,a RMSE lower than 1.414,or a mean square skill score beyond 0.This study indicates that utilizing the different initialization schemes of this climate model may be an efficient approach when forming ensemble predictions of the MJO.展开更多

The monthly mean LFDs of the foraminiferal metacommunities (all stations), assemblages (groups of stations defined by cluster analysis), and the agglutinated and calcareous specimens within each were compared separately. The LFDs of the Caroni swamp metacommunity did not fluctuate significantly among months, but significantly higher abundances of agglutinated specimens occurred in the upper assemblage in March; and calcareous specimens in the lower assemblage in November. At Claxton bay, monthly LFDs of the metacommunities and assemblages did not vary significantly, but calcareous and agglutinated species within each favoured dry (March and May) and wet (August and November) months respectively At the temperate marshes, significantly higher LFDs of the metacommunities and assemblages were recorded in warmer months. Since flat belts are commonly used for conveying and transmission purposes, tracking systems have been well developed, but the ultimate tracking behaviour of the belt can be greatly enhanced by taking special care in the creation of an adequate tracking mechanism. To obtain long-life operation and full value from the equipment, the correct tracking technique plays an important role. This paper deals with two tracking techniques: The skewed and the angled pulley axis. Numerical simulation results are compared with both measurements and an analytical approach. The advantages of numerical simulation compared to experimental tests are ease, convenience and the absence of any safety risk. Compared to analytical approaches the simulation is used for systems for which simple closed form analytic solutions are not possible.展开更多

A mass-balanced trophic model consisting o...The Jimo coast encompasses an area of 2157 km^2, and the ecosystem is valuable both socially and economically with regional fisheries substantially contributing to the value. A mass-balanced trophic model consisting of 15 functional ecological groups was developed for the coastal ecosystem using the Ecopath model in Ecopath with Ecosim(Ew E) software(version 6.4.3). The results of the model simulations indicated that the trophic levels of the functional groups varied between 1.0 and 3.76, and the total production of the system was estimated to be 5112.733 t km^(-2) yr^(-1) with a total energy transfer efficiency of 17.6%. The proportion of the total flow originating from detritus was estimated to be 48%, whereas that from primary producers was 52%, indicating that the grazing food chain dominated the energy flow. The ratio of total primary productivity to total respiration in the system was 3.78, and the connectivity index was 0.4. The fin cycling index and the mean path length of the energy flow were 4.92% and 2.57%, respectively, which indicated that the ecosystem exhibits relatively low maturity and stability. The mixed trophic impact(MTI) procedure suggested that the ecological groups at lower trophic levels dominated the feeding dynamics in the Jimo coastal ecosystem. Overfishing is thought to be the primary reason for the degeneration of the Jimo coastal ecosystem, resulting in a decline in the abundance of pelagic and demersal fish species and a subsequent shift to the predominance of lower-trophic-level functional groups. Finally, we offered some recommendations for improving current fishery management practices.展开更多
