Combined with theoretical analysis and experimental investigation, the sensitivity of the temperature sensor is related to the thicknesses of the upper cladding layer, the waveguide layer, the optical loss of the polymer material and the guided wave modes. The results show that the slope value about reflectivity and temperature, which stands for the sensitivity of the polymer thin film temperature sensor, is associated with the waveguide film thickness and the guided wave modes, and the slope value is the highest in the zero reflectance of a certain transverse electric (TE) mode. To improve the sensitivity of the temperature sensor, the sensor's working incident light exterior angle α should be chosen under a certain TE mode with the reflectivity to be zero. This temperature sensor is characterized by high sensitivity and simple structure and it is easily fabricated.展开更多

The S-wave velocity(Vs) was separately inverted using the S-phase arrival times. The earthquake hypocenters were simultaneously relocated in the joint inversion. The method considers the Vp/Vs anomaly as a model parameter in the inversion. The proposed method thus provides a more robust calculation of the Vp/Vs anomaly than the conventional method of dividing Vp by Vs. The method also takes into account the ray path difference between P- and S-waves, and hence yields a less biased Vp–Vs ratio than the method of inverting S–P-wave data for Vp and Vp/Vs anomalies under the assumption of identical P and S ray paths. The proposed method was used to image the crust and upper mantle in northeastern(NE) Japan taking advantage of a large number of high-quality arrival times of P- and S-wave source–receiver pairs. The inverted structures suggest that the subducting slab of the Pacific plate is an inclined zone of high-Vp and Vs anomalies with low Vp/Vs perturbation. The mantle wedge is characterized by low-Vp, low-Vs, and high-Vp/Vs anomalies at shallow depths beneath active volcanoes. These features are also observed at greater depths in the back-arc region. Although these features have been previously reported, the Vp/Vs anomaly pattern obtained in this study shows much less scatter and is much better correlated with the seismic velocity perturbation patterns than previous studies. The proposed method can be used, in conjunction with velocity anomaly patterns, to quantify thermal processes associated with plate subduction.展开更多

Therefore many numerical methods are used on these elements of integrated optics. Simulation response of an optical slab waveguide used in integrated optics needs such numerical methods. These methods must be precise and useful in terms of memory capacity and time duration. In this paper, we study basic analytical and finite difference methods to determine the effective refractive index of AIGaAs-GaAs slab waveguide. Also, appropriate effective refractive index value is obtained with respect to number of grid points and number of matrix sizes. Finally, the validity of the obtained values by both methods is compared to using waveguide type.展开更多

The method that best predicts the strength of the concrete slab can be derived from a relationship between compressive strengths and stress wave velocities. Concrete slab specimens of varying air content, were formed with a mix ratio of air-entrained agent of 0%, 0.15%, 0.3%, 0.7% and 1.5% by weight. These slabs were tested and analyzed to measure the stress wave velocities in order to develop a correlation with compressive strengths. The plot between the stress waves and compressive strengths showed a stiffslope up to an air ratio of 4% with a less steep slope beyond this point. In the process of predicting the compressive strength of concrete slab specimens, the prediction of compressive strength based on the compression wave velocity caused an average error of 4.9% in the compression wave velocity, and the prediction of compressive strength based on the surface wave velocity caused an average error of 2.2% in the surface wave velocity.展开更多

We show the existence of an absolute band gap of the perfect phononic crystal and linear defect modes inside the gap caused by localization of flexural waves at or near the defects. The displacement distributions show that flexural waves can transmit well along the straight linear defect created by removing one row of cylinders from the perfect phononic crystals for almost all the frequencies falling in the band gap, which indicates that this structure can act as a high efficiency waveguide. However, for bending or branching linear defects, there exist both guided and localized modes, and therefore the phononic crystals could be served as waveguides or filters.展开更多
