The increasing overlap of core and colony populations during the anaphase of evolution may limit the performance of shifting balance genetic algorithms. To decrease such overlapping,so as to increase the local search capability of the core population,the sub-space method was used to generate uniformly distributed initial colony populations over the decision variable space. The core population was also dynamically divided,making simultaneous searching in several local spaces possible. The algorithm proposed in this paper was compared to the original one by searching for the optimum of a complicated multi-modal function. The results indicate that the solutions obtained by the modified algorithm are better than those of the original algorithm. 展开更多

In a manufacturing industry, mixed model assembly line(MMAL) is preferred in order to meet the variety in product demand. MMAL balancing helps in assembling products with similar characteristics in a random fashion. The objective of this work aims in reducing the number of workstations, work load index between stations and within each station. As manual contribution of workers in final assembly line is more, ergonomics is taken as an additional objective function. Ergonomic risk level of a workstation is evaluated using a parameter called accumulated risk posture(ARP), which is calculated using rapid upper limb assessment(RULA) check sheet. This work is based on the case study of an MMAL problem in Rane(Madras) Ltd.(India), in which a problem based genetic algorithm(GA) has been proposed to minimize the mentioned objectives. The working of the genetic operators such as selection, crossover and mutation has been modified with respect to the addressed MMAL problem. The results show that there is a significant impact over productivity and the process time of the final assembled product, i.e., the rate of production is increased by 39.5% and the assembly time for one particular model is reduced to 13 min from existing 18 min. Also, the space required using the proposed assembly line is only 200 m2 against existing 350 m2. Further, the algorithm helps in reducing workers fatigue(i.e., ergonomic friendly). 展开更多

This problem consists in the allocation of courses in the periods that are part of a curriculum such that the prerequisites are satisfied and the load of courses is balanced for the students. This paper presents the solution for a modified BACP where the academic loads and number of curses may be the same or different for each one of the periods and allows having some courses in a specific period. This problem is modeled as an integer programming problem and is proposed the use of Tabu search with short-term memory for its solution because it is not possible to find solutions for all the instances of this modified problem with an exact method. 展开更多

This paper presents the analytical simulation of an elastically restrained tapered cantilever beam using the energy balance method(EBM) and the iteration perturbation method(IPM).To assess the accuracy of solutions,we compare the results with the harmonic balance method(HBM).The obtained results from EBM and IPM are in excellent agreement with HBM results.The results show that both methods can be easily extended to other nonlinear oscillations and it can be predicted that both methods can be found widely applicable in engineering and physics. 展开更多

In this paper, the variation of contact angles of a droplet on grooved surfaces was studied from microscale to macroscale experimentally and theoretically. The experimental results indicated that the contact angle changes nonlinearly with anisotropic factor. To get clear of the changing process of contact angle on grooved surfaces from microscale to macroscale, we carried out theoretical analysis with moment equilibrium method being adopted. In addition, the variation of contact angles in different directions was investigated and a mathematic model to calculate arbitrary contact angles around the elliptic contact line was suggested. For the convenience of potential applications, a symbolic contact angle was proposed to characterize the ellipsoidal cap droplet on grooved surfaces. Our results will offer help to the future design of patterned surfaces in practical applications,and deepen the understanding of wetting behavior on grooved surfaces. 展开更多

Protic ionic liquid (PIL) triethylammonium acetate was prepared by mixing equimolar amounts of acetic acid and triethylamine, and then studied using the combination of the Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, in-situ infrared spectroscopy, pH, and conductivity titration measurements. It was found that the equimolar synthesized triethylammonium acetate was separated into two layers, which suggesting that there were both chemical and phase equilibrium in this solution. Molecular species could be directly observed in the IR spectra over the range of 1200-1800 cm-1 and also checked by 1H NMR. Based on analysis, the upper layer was rich in amine with little acid and PIL, and the down layer was rich in PIL with residual acetic acid and amine. And single PIL-rich layer could be separated into two layers again when the mole ratio of newly added triethyamine to the theoretical produced triethylammonium acetate reached 0.12. 展开更多

The use of satellite thermal infrared information is being developed as a method of exploring current tectonic activity. To realize real world application, an objective, stable and testable thermal physical index that is simultaneously related with tectonic activity must be established. From the viewpoint of the energy balance, the land surface is a boundary where energy is exchanged between outer space and the solid Earth. Regardless of how complex the influencing factors are, the land surface is mainly affected by the Sun, atmosphere and underground heat. In this paper, first, the relationships among land surface temperature, solar radiation, atmospheric temperature and thermal information from underground are obtained employing a mathematic physical method based on the equation of heat conduction and energy balance at the land surface. Second, a thermal physical index called the geothermal flux index (GFI), which can provide the activity state of underground heat, is constructed. Third, the theoretical basis of the thermal physical index is verified using stable annual variations in land surface temperature and solar radiation. Finally, combined with known crustal deformations derived using a global positioning system, the effectiveness of the GFI in extracting field tectonic motion is tested. The results indicate that the GFI is effective in providing information on current tectonic activity. 展开更多

The researchers chose suitable picture... The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of the balanced reading program on the elementary school students in Taiwan. The participants were 36 fifth graders in Taiwan. The researchers chose suitable picture books as teaching materials and made use of them to design a balanced reading program. The program combines the ideas of whole language and phonics rules. Whole-part-whole structure was used in the teaching process. The teaching of the balanced reading program lasted for nine weeks. The questionnaire of learning feedbacks, the questionnaire of reading activities, the teacher's journal, interviews with teachers and students were used to gather data. Six facts were found after the analysis of the data: (1) Among the picture books, 'Seven Blind Mice' and 'Snow' were chosen by the students as their favorite. (2) Most students liked the reading activities for this semester. (3) The students made progress in reading ability and reading techniques. (4) The frequency of the students' reading English storybooks increased. (5) Most students were willing to read English storybooks after the program. (6) The table of self-evaluation didn't work well. Some suggestions have been provided according to the findings. 展开更多
