Decline in hippocampal memory function is especially prominent with age and often reduces quality of life. As the aging population expands, the need for interventional strategies to prevent cognitive decline has become more pressing. Fortunately, several major lifestyle factors have proven effective at combating hippocampal aging, the most well-known of which are environmental enrichment and exercise. While the evidence supporting the beneficial nature of these factors is substantial, a less well-understood factor may also contribute to healthy cognitive aging: social engagement. We review the evidence supporting the role of social engagement in preserving hippocampal function in old age. In elderly humans, high levels of social engagement correlate with better hippocampal function, yet there is a dearth of work to indicate a causative role. Existing rodent literature is also limited but has begun to provide causative evidence and establish candidate mechanisms. Summed together, while many unanswered questions remain, it is clear that social engagement is a viable lifestyle factor for preserving cognitive function in old age. Social integration across the lifespan warrants more investigation and more appreciation when designing living circumstances for the elderly.展开更多

METHODS: We recruited 417 subjects from the general population and performed an assessment of the diet, using a 3-d weighed dietary record survey. We employed contribution analysis (CA) and multiple regression analysis (MRA) to select food items covering up to a 90% contribution and a 0.90 R2, respectively. The total number of food items consumed was 523 (443 in the urban and 417 in the rural population) and the intake of 29 nutrients was calculated according to the actual consumption by foods/ recipes. RESULTS: The CA selected 233,194, and 183 foods/recipes for the combined, the urban and the rural areas, respectively, and then 196,157, and 160 were chosen by the MRA. Finally, 125 foods/recipes were selected for the final questionnaire. The frequencies were classified into eight categories and standard portion sizes were also calculated. CONCLUSION: For adoption of the area-specific SQFFQ, validity and reproducibility tests are now planned tc determine how the combined SQFFQ performs in actual assessment of disease risk and benefit.展开更多

Here, we report a case of giant hepatobiliary cystadenoma in a male patient with obvious convex papillate. On the basis of imaging examinations, the patient was diagnosed as hepatobiliary cystadenoma prior to operation. Left hepatectomy was performed and the patient was symptom-free during a 6-too follow-up period, suggesting that imaging examination is the major diagnostic method of hepatobiliary cystadenoma, and operation is its best treatment modality.展开更多

In the 1960s, the consolidation of youth culture becomes an international phenomenon. With the development of ready-to-wear, adolescents begin to be target as a consumer market. The music and fashion industries unite to create and advertise youth lifestyle. The fashion shifts from Paris to London. Magazine articles and publicity set the latest trends. The method applied is research in primary source--the British journal The Drapers' Record aiming to recognize fashion transformation and juvenilization in this period of time. The magazine shows ads and fashion editorials (mainly feminine), articles and news about fashion trend. There is also a brands guide for shoppers and retailers. The magazines used in the research are from 1964 to 1967, July and August issues, when the fall-winter trends are shown. From 1964 on, we notice the orientation towards a juvenile market and style, but these trends will only fully materialize through 1967. It leads to the conclusion that between 1965 and 1967 fashion juvenilization developed, reached its peak and global range.展开更多

It is supposed to see the change soon as smart phone changed life style. This research aims to figure out the direction of this change, development in technique for elders. It also studies various theories to justify various methods for ambient assistance robotic design for elders. In the long life expectancy world, this design will enhance the life quality of elders and encourage young people get pride in their own job, because their career will continue and it deserves to invest all their energy and sincerity in a specific area. As ambient robotics are a design for elders' adjacent assistive design and part of everyday, it is related with quality of elders' life. Some theories are cited for the importance of meaningful life. Meaningfulness is regarded as the fundamental goal of design purpose, because meaning stands upon the concept of human being and its consciousness activity. Phenomenological background of this research is introduced. It can be suggested in field observation to get real stories containing meanings and essence of life of elders. In conclusion, this study is a beginning of long process to prepare aging society with technique as well as perspective to see elders as valuable work force.展开更多

As a new way of old-age pension, intelligent endowment service has been implemented in China, and gradually extended. But it has some problems: the contents of the service are not enough and it cannot fit other people's needs. It is the lack of linkage on every department of government and the funds and so on .In order to solve these problems, we should expand the service content and improve the service level, define the government's role and function, increase the sources of funding and so on. With the implementing of these measures, intelligent endowment services will get further development. And it will deal with the social problem of aging better.展开更多

Without intervention, obese children are at risk for negative health consequences and for the increased likelihood of staying obese through adulthood. St. Louis Children's Hospital provides HTT (Head to Toe), an interactive 12-session fimess, nutrition, and social well-being class focuses on adopting healthier lifestyles through daily exercise, and proper nutrition. One program referral method is through a partnership with the hospital's HSC (Healthy Start Clinic), a multi-disciplinary obesity clinic. Pretest and posttest assessments are used to measure changes in body metrics, health behaviors, knowledge, readiness to change, and self-concept. Between August 2011 and May 2016, 485 children and at least one parent or guardian with them were enrolled in the program, and up to 235 children completed at least one pretest- or post-assessment. Analysis determined multiple statistically significant improvements in body metrics, health behaviors, knowledge, including questions related to nutrition and food guidelines, readiness to change assessment, and self-concept. Total knowledge increased by 22%; questions related to nutrition increased by 28.2%, social emotional by 18.9% and physical activity by 17.8%. Findings suggest that the Head to Toe program is effective in improving nutrition, physical activity, social emotional knowledge and behaviors among participants. Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic and creating a relationship with a pediatric obesity clinic can increase the total number of children and teens that are introduced to weight management programs.展开更多

In Thailand, older people often seek medical attention at times when they are extremely ill. Healthy lifestyle behaviors are essential in order for one to maintain their health. Certain regimens can be initiated to manage and control health problems. However, very few know about how the elderly maintain their subjective physical well-being, while living with obesity and hypertension. This qualitative study focuses on describing health care practices and behaviors of overweight and hypertensive older people in everyday Thai society. Ten elderly people have participated in this study through purposive sampling. Qualitative data was gathered via in-depth interviews and was analyzed by using a content analysis method. The findings illustrate that health care seeking behaviors emerged from an understanding to seek health care; acting behaviors based on knowledge, and seeking health care support. Most overweight and hypertensive elderly people in Thai cultures have the desire to maintain their everyday lives by continuing their routines or traditions that were in place before seeking professional attention. This knowledge is useful in developing health care practices with wider implications such as holistic care to elderly people for alleviating their suffering by promoting healthy lifestyles and maintaining healthy blood pressure.展开更多
