When the loading strain rates are 10^(-5), 10^(-4) and 10^(-3)/s, uniaxial compression strengths of dry sandstones are 82.3, 126.6 and 141.6 MPa, respectively, and that of water saturated sandstones are 70.5, 108.3 and 124.1 MPa, respectively. The above results show that the uniaxial compression strength increases with the increase of strain rate, however, variation of softening coefficient is insignificant. Under monotonic loading condition, tangent modulus increases with an increment of stress (strain) to a maximum value at a certain stress level, beyond which it starts to decline. Under the partial cyclic loading during loading path condition, unloading or reloading modulus is larger than loading modulus, and unloading and reloading moduli are almost constants with respect to stress level, especially unloading modulus. Under the sine wave cyclic loading condition, tangent modulus and Poisson ratio display asymmetric 'X' shape with various strain, and the average unloading modulus is larger than the average loading modulus.展开更多

However, the design of the heat exchanger used within the BTES system can also make a significant difference in the efficiency of the system. A thermal response test was carded out for a Kelix GHE (ground heat exchanger) system, the latest innovation in geothermal ground loop construction, on an Ecofarm in the town of Caledon East, Ontario, Canada. In addition, a verifying test was performed for a CEES (conventional earth energy system) located 6 m away from the Kelix GHE. The boreholes for these two different heat exchanger designs were drilled with the same diameter, to the same depth and were located in the same/identical geo-hydrological conditions. The response test provided the effective average of undisturbed ground temperature, geothermal properties including thermal conductivity, heat capacity and thermal resistance between the fluid and the borehole wall. The mathematical analysis method used for the response test is presented here. Results of the response test were verified, analyzed and are further discussed.展开更多

The longevity activity of ERF was determined by lifespan assay under normal culture condition. The survival rate of nematodes under various stress conditions was assessed to validate the effects of ERF on the stress tolerance. To determine the antioxidant potential of ERF, the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were investigated. The ERF-mediated change in SOD-3 expression was examined using GFP-expressing transgenic strain. The effects of ERF on the aging-related factors were investigated by reproduction assay and pharyngeal pumping assay. The intestinal lipofuscin levels of aged nematodes were also measured. The mechanistic studies were performed using selected mutant strains. Our results indicated that ERF showed potent lifespan extension effects on the wild-type nematode under both normal and various stress conditions. The ERF treatment also enhanced the activity and expression of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and attenuated the intracellular ROS levels. Moreover, ERF-fed nematodes showed decreased lipofuscin accumulation, indicating ERF might affect age-associated changes in C. elegans. The results of mechanistic studies indicated that there was no significant lifespan extension in ERF-treated daf-2, age-l, sir-2.1, and daf-16 null mutants, suggesting that they were involved in ERF-mediated lifespan regulation. In conclusion, R. fasciculatum confers increased longevity and stress resistance in C. elegans via SIR-2.1-mediated DAF-16 activation, dependent on the insulin/1GF signaling pathway.展开更多
