Hence, problems to coordinate the professional construction management (PCM) and the supervising architectural company often occur for the lack of long-term experience to work together. The various factors that affect the implementation of turn-key projects currently practiced in Taiwan are analyzed using the analytic network process (ANP). The objective is to study how the twelve key factors in the four layers of "Role assignment","Signing contract","Operational procedures" and "Losing capital investment" affect the progress of implementing the turn-key project in Taiwan. The results reveal that "Delay in payment" has the most negative influence with 15.62% weighing factor; "Latent risk" comes next with 11.14% weighing factor, and "Responsibility of construction company for project quality" is the third with 10.79% weighing factor.展开更多

Trial and error has long been the method for learning how to avoid problems in the construction of energy-efficient housing, including water intrusion and mold growth. Building codes have addressed these issues in prescriptive ways that were not evidence-based. Stricter building codes or builder licensing requirements are not necessarily the solutions to problems associated with misunderstandings about building science. Motivating professionals currently involved in the housing industry to learn through continuing education is a start, but the core problem must be addressed by including building science education in curricula related to architecture, engineering, construction management and other fields. The long-term solution is to include building science education in academic construction management programs. The purpose of this paper is to review the history of what has come to be known as building science and its importance to the residential construction industry. Problems that result from a lack of knowledge about the field are covered and a potential solution is proposed.展开更多

The questionnaire survey included 23 small machine construction companies (less than 50 employees), 24 medium-sized machine construction companies (50-249 employees), and 53 larger machine construction companies (250 and more employees). The results of the survey indicated that almost one half (43%) of respondent machine construction company top management members planned to hire new employees this year. In addition, 50% of them confirmed their endeavour to keep the current headcount and a mere 7% of them specified problems that would lead to the dismissal of employees. However, what is bothering machine construction top management members is the lack of qualifications and practical experience of job seekers they have to deal with. The intention of the authors is to define the main reasons and propose possible solutions of this problem within human resource management in machine construction companies.展开更多

Key findings include the comparison of a constrained and unconstrained workforce on construction and manufacturing completion times, the identification of peak labor requirements based on different construction schedules, and the development of training estimates to ensure the workforce and industry are prepared for the new jobs being created. Results suggest that a shorter planned construction timeline is effective when the workforce is moderately constrained to unconstrained. However, with a severely-constrained starting workforce, a longer construction timeline is preferred. For multiple reactor plans, spreading out the construction start dates outperforms all other construction start date schedules. In particular, heavily compressed start dates could effectively kill a resurgent nuclear industry, especially if workforce expansion is not pursued simultaneously.展开更多

In most cases, student learning is analyzed only within the context of an academic program using survey methods which do not accurately quantify overall student learning. Contrary to this condition, construction management programs increasingly require students to take level lofthe nationally administered CQE (constructor qualification exam) upon graduation. However, little or no analysis of this data is conducted beyond basic interpretation of the national and program averages provided by the testing agency. Providing a statistical approach to analyze this data and to propose recommended strategies for its improvement, this research develops and investigates statistical methods to analyze the national test data as a program assessment tool for student learning. Specifically, this work seeks to develop performance standards and expectations for students when taking the CQE exam, to define correlations between student GPA (grade point average) and student performance on the CQE exam. Likewise, this work presents methods to identify program weakness and strategies for improvement by comparing the CQE Level 1 exam with ACCE (American council for construction education) accreditation standards.展开更多

Therefore, from the design, construction, operation and maintenance stages of the built infrastructural systems; cognizance must be taken of the associated factors and their significance. In considering these indices, the experts will save lots of resources wastage thereby integrating new technologies into the full life cycle of the infrastructure. In this paper, two sets of building infrastructure professionals were assessed. These are the corporate building organization (CBO) and the Operators from two shopping malls within the UK. Thirty-four factors regarding the sustainable building infrastructure appraisal were identified through literature reviews. These characteristics were accordingly classified into two factors (group I and II) and a comparative analysis of their influence conducted. Priority rating of the factors assessment on building infrastructure was through structured, administered survey amongst professionals within these organizations. Information of this survey revealed that the experts maintained a strong concordance in rating these factors. As a result, the associated factors have relatively substantial degree of influence in this context. Further indications of the result in groups I and II are that the CBO experts have indicated the infrastructure size, planning and design as the key factors. Also, the type of building characteristic was among others as the top and bottom marked cases. Similarly, the Operators too have maintained that a proper infrastructure design should incorporate a good policy framework for efficient energy saving fixtures and conservation. Additionally, the installation of quality equipment promotes cost savings of the resources and a just-in-time maintenance of the infrastructure at large. The maintain as-we-go philosophy characteristic was not strongly encouraged in this case.展开更多

In this paper, the author details the three aspects substation construction management of the project, namely the concept of substation engineering, project management and construction safety, through these three aspects, the author analyzes the construction project management substation existing problems, To solve these problems and issues proposed some measures and construction process that need attention. It launched separately from the design, schedule, quality and other aspects of security and research, and in the course of the study stressed the importance of coordination between elements of construction and construction sectors as well as cooperation between the construction, explains the importance of the project cost control.展开更多
