The aim of this research is to study the changes in the initial conditions which ca...When a relatively new building is not being fully utilized, there must have existed, at one time, a change in its initial conditions. The aim of this research is to study the changes in the initial conditions which cause buildings to be underutilized and analyze whether the demolition was justified. Causes can be found in problems due to the building's management, as the owners make the main decisions concerning the buildings. Additionally problems are due to the location where the building is constructed because site conditions changes a lot in one generation. The use of the building can also be a cause of abandonment as the original use can end before the lifespan of the building. Architectural style can be dated as fashions and styles change rapidly. Finally, causes can be in the physical condition of the buildings: structure, construction, installations and adherence to current regulations. In this article, the authors provide guidelines demonstrating how buildings of a past generation which were initially considered obsolete, can be properly reused.展开更多

A new generic reaction in the form of PC_i→PC_m+[i,m]→PC_m+λi,m coke+surplusage has been proposed for describing the catalytic cracking behavior of petroleum narrow cuts or pseudo-components(PCs),where the rate con...A new generic reaction in the form of PC_i→PC_m+[i,m]→PC_m+λi,m coke+surplusage has been proposed for describing the catalytic cracking behavior of petroleum narrow cuts or pseudo-components(PCs),where the rate constant formula is derived from the transition state theory and the coking amount is correlated to the properties of the intermediate substance [i,m].In composing the cracking reaction network for feedstock and product oils,only the product PC m of the proposed generic reaction is used,which together with a criterion for excluding exothermic reactions,distinctly reduces the number of reactions in the network.With the proposed cracking reaction scheme coupled with special pseudo-components,a predictive one-dimensional steady state model for fluid catalytic cracking risers is formulated in the sense that for a given riser and given catalyst,the model parameters are independent of stock oils,product schemes and other operational conditions.The great correlating and predicting capability of the resulted model is tested with production data in different scenarios of four commercial risers.展开更多
In this paper,we apply the material point method(MPM),also known as a meshfree method,to examine the crush behaviour of thin tubular columns.Unlike the finite element method,randomly-distributed-weak-particle triggers...In this paper,we apply the material point method(MPM),also known as a meshfree method,to examine the crush behaviour of thin tubular columns.Unlike the finite element method,randomly-distributed-weak-particle triggers were used to account for the deformation behaviour of collapse modes.Both symmetric and asymmetric modes of deformation and their associated mean collapse loads are determined for an elasto-plastic constitutive law describing the tubular columns.Attention was devoted to the accuracy and the convergence of the MPM simulation,which is determined by the number of the particles and the size of the background cells used in our explicit solver.Furthermore,a novel contact approach was adopted to establish the crush behaviour of the tubular columns.Two aspects of the work were accordingly examined,including three different crush velocities(5,10 and 15 m/s) and varied geometrical features of the tube(t/d and l/d) based on the deformation history.The results of our model,which were compared with existing analytical predictions and experimental findings,identify the critical geometric features of the tubular columns that would dictate the deformation mode as being either progressive collapse or following Euler's buckling mode.展开更多

This may lead to the formation of plint...At elevated temperature regimes and abundant precipitation, mobilization and accretion of weathered iron oxides are promoted especially in a reduced environments in the tropics. This may lead to the formation of plinthite, which hardens irreversibly upon repeated wetting and drying to form petroplinthite. The need for this review stems from the seemingly dearth of information on the subject and a need to clarify different terms used in describing plinthite. We review various research works on plinthite and its associated pedogenic forms in the tropics. Furthermore, we proffer recommendations as to the most appropriate land use management practices that could help minimise the environmental and agronomic problems associated with plinthite and its related pedogenic forms. Parent material, temperature, seasonality and geomorphology are critical factors that influence soil water regime which in turn affect the pedogenesis of plinthite. Soil pH and mineralogy are additional factors that could also promote plinthite formation. Fossil plinthic soils are potential proxies for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. Measures used in the management of plinthic soils include mechanically breaking the hardpans and the use of organic and inorganic amendments to modify the structure and chemistry of the soils. Avoidance of practices that would predispose soils to erosion would also prevent plinthization. We call for the relinquishment of the term "[aterite" which is a generM term for all forms of iron oxide-enriched earthy materials as used for plinthite. Plinthic horizon should also be incorporated into the United States Department of Agriculture Soil Taxonomy in view of its growing importance in soils.展开更多
