These effects can extend for kilometers affecting hydraulic structures located in the vicinity of the river reach. In this paper, the geomorphic effects of gravel mining are reviewed and summarized. Some cases in Venezuelan streams are presented to illustrate the problem. To describe the processes of erosion and sedimentation in a gravel extraction pit, a recent developed mathematical model for the simulation of flow and sediment transport in gravel-cobble bed streams is applied to a hypothetical case of gravel mining in a river channel. A simple rectangular dredge pit is imposed as initial condition in the channel bed, and changes in bed elevations and grain size distribution of bed material are calculated by using the numerical model. The process of deposition within the pit, and the downstream and upstream migration of the erosion wave are well simulated by the model and closely resemble the phenomena observed in laboratory experiments. The response of the friction coefficient to the changes in flow and bed elevations shows the importance in modeling adequately flow resistance and sediment transport in gravel-cobble bed streams. 展开更多

Explaining fundamentals of application of cable bolting for a thick seam depillaring, this paper summarizes the results of field studies conducted during adoption of this approach in more than fifteen panels of Madhusudanpur 7 pit and incline mine.Nearly 7.0 m thick Kajora top coal seam of this mine is developed on pillars along the floor horizon to an average height of 3.0 m,leaving a coal band of around 4.0 m along the roof.Analysis of procured core samples showed that roof strata are easily caveable with a caveability index value of around 2000 only.Easily caveable overlying strata and shallow depth of cover alleviated most of the expected strata mechanics problems of the thick seam mining. However, extraction of total thickness at shallow cover caused differential-subsidence and cracks on the surface. These manifestations were immediately tackled to avoid creation of a breathing path for spontaneous heating in the extracted area. 展开更多

The coal industry in China has been moving from the semiarid eastern to the drier western regions since the beginning of this century.Water protection is of the utmost concern for coal mining in these regions.Lu'an,as one of the state coal mining bases in China, has been seeing increasingly heavier pressure for the protection of water resources. This article considers Lu'an as an example and describes the ways these concerns may be alleviated.High mine-water utilization rates have effectively reduced wasting of water and, consequently, have reduced water demand.Using the top layers of the Ordavician as aquifuge barriers can prevent floor karst water inrush into the longwall face and can protect the regional Ordovician karst water resources at the same time. The strength of the overlying Quaternary clay can protect against roof collapse and has successfully preserved the Quaternary porous water resource. 展开更多

Based upon characteristic movement features of the overlying strata in solid backfill mining and in-situ observations,an associated model representing a roadway support system has been developed.Based on the Winkler foundation and beam model, the current study presents a static analysis of the model, thus permitting acquisition of a theoretical formula pertaining to roof convergence.Through use of working face 6304-1(Jisan Colliery) as the research setting, the association between roof convergence magnitude and both packwall strength and width have been elucidated.Based upon observed conditions at the working face, realistic packwall parameters have been formulated, with numerical simulation results and field application results indicating that design parameters garnered from the developed formula successfully adapted to local geological movement and deformation.Accordingly, roadway deformation was shown to be within the permissible range, thus satisfying mine production requirements. The proposed method in the current study may give a design basis for pack design in the context of SBM under similar conditions. 展开更多

Cooling energy needs, for mines in Northern Ontario, are mainly driven by the mining depth and its operation. Part I of this research focusses on the thermal energy loads in deep mines as a result of the virgin rock temperature, mining operations and climatic conditions. A breakdown of the various heat sources is outlined, for an underground mine producing 3500 tonnes per day of broken rock, taking into consideration the latent and sensible portions of that heat to properly assess the wet bulb global temperature. The resulting thermal loads indicate that cooling efforts would be needed both at surface and underground to maintain the temperature underground within the legal threshold. In winter the air might also have to be heated at surface and cooled underground, to ensure that icing does not occur in the inlet ventilation shaft-the main reason why coolin~ cannot be focussed solely at surface. 展开更多

Four quarters' water collecting and monitoring samples were done in the mining subsidence lakes of different water storing periods ( 2 to 7 years), considering the water storing time and pollution sources state of the subsidence lakes. The following indexes were discussed such as organic indexes (TOC, CODM,, BOD, COD), nutrient salts (TN, NH4^+, NO3, NO,, Kjeldahl Nitrogen, TP, PO4^3- ), etc. It is shown that water quality of the mining subsidence lake during the initial stage ( 2 years to 7 years) can stay relatively stable with a fluctuation during different quarters in a year, which can reach class Ill or IV of the Surthcc Water Environmental Quality Standard. 展开更多
