Methods Sixty-three patients (32 women and 31 men) with diagnosed MTLE underwent diagnostic MR imaging (MRI) and proton MRS using a 3.0T MR scanner. The clinical history and interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) were recorded. Sixteen healthy volunteers served as control. The results of proton MRS were compared with the findings of electroencephalogram and structural MRI findings. Results Twenty-seven of the 63 patients with MTLE showed unilateral hippocampal sclerosis, and 9 showed bilateral hippocampal sclerosis. The concentration ratio of N-acytelaspartate (NAA) / [ creatine ( Cr ) + choline (Cho) ] in the hippocampal region of MTLE patients (0. 64±0. 07) was significantly lower than control (0. 80±0. 05, P = 0.023). In the patients with unilateral hippocampal sclerosis, NAA/(Cr + Cho) in the hippocampal region ipsilateral to the sclerotic hippocampus (0.56±0.06) was significantly lower than the ratio in the contralateral hippocampal region (0.69±0.07, P 〈 0. 001 ). There was significant difference in hippocampal NAA/( Cr + Cho) between the refractory patients and the non-refractory patients (0. 64±0. 05 vs.0.71±0. 07, P =0. 04). Forty-five patients were lateralized by IEDs, while 49 patients were lateralized by metabolite ratio. And lateralization determined by proton MRS and IEDs was concordant in 33 patients. Conclusions MRS as a noninvasive tool adds helpful metabolite information to routine MRI in evaluation of MTLE. The method is well established and should be a routine clinical application in the investigation of epilepsy.展开更多

We report an asymptomatic 62-year-old woman with complete agenesis of the dorsal pancreas. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed a normal pancreatic head, but pancreatic body and tail were not visualized. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings were similar to CT. At magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP), the major pancreatic duct was short and the dorsal pancreatic duct was not visualized. The final diagnosis was dorsal pancreatic agenesis.展开更多

Pre-earthquake anomalous Schumann resonance is an important manifestation of LAIC (Lithosphere-Atmosphere-Ionosphere Coupling), which is probably associated with seismic ionospheric disturbance. The observation system parameters of the Yunnan Schumann resonance monitoring stations and the results of statistical and seismic cases analysis are introduced in this paper. Three days before the March 10, 2011 MS5.8 Yingjiang earthquake, anomalous Schumann resonance in the By component (E-W) was observed by Yongsheng station, and two days before the Lincang MS4.0 earthquake of January 23, 2011, anomalous Schumann resonance in the By component was detected by the same station. Spectrum analysis results on the By component observations of Tonghai station show that strong disturbances were observed in spectral density corresponding to the first three Schumann resonant frequencies on the very day of the MS4.2 Honghe earthquake of May 22, 2011. Research shows that Schumann resonance monitoring is a feasible method for seismic-electromagnetic precursors monitoring.展开更多

METHODS: Plasma samples taken from patients with complicated diseases with abnormal Savda (n= 140, including 35 cases each of diabetes, asthma, breast cancer, and cervical carcinoma) and from healthy controls (n=35) were analyzed by ~H NMR (600 MHz), and the spectral profiles were analyzed by multivariate analysis using orthogonal projec- tion to latent structure with discriminant analysis. RESULTS: Supervised modeling of the data provid- ed very good discrimination between patients and healthy controls. Compared with ,the healthy controls, the patient groups with different disease con- ditions displayed similar metabolic changes, characterized by lower creatine, creatinine, lactate, and amino acid levels (including isoleucine, leucine, va- line, alanine, and 1-methylhistidine) and higher lip- id levels (very low-density lipoproteins and unsatu- rated lipids). Additionally, cancer patients (breast and cervical) showed decreased myo-inositol, a-glucose, and 13-glucose, and increased pyruvate and carnitine in plasma. CONCLUSION: The data indicate that decreased ox- idative defense, liver function abnormalities, amino acid deficiencies, and energy metabolism disorders are common characteristics of complicated diseas- es, which may be related to the formation of abnor- mal Savda.展开更多
