This paper presented two methods to analyze the stability of a gravity dam and its foundation. The direct analysis method was based on a rigid limit equilibrium method which regarded both dam and the rock foundation as undeformable rigid bodies. In this method, the safety factor of potential sliding surfaces was computed directly. The second method, the indirect analysis method, was based on elasto-plastic theory and employs nonlinear finite element method (FEM) in the analysis of stresses and deformation in the dam and its foundation. The determination of the safety degree of the structure was based on the convergence and abrupt the change criterion. The results obtained showed that structures' constituent material behavior played an active role in the failure of engineered structures in addition to the imposed load.展开更多

Triaxial drained tests on rockfill were conducted on a large scale triaxial apparatus under two types of stress paths, which were the stress paths of constant stress ratio and the complex stress paths with transitional features. Motivated by the effect of stress path, the Gudehus-Bauer hypoplastic model was improved by considering the parameter variations with different ratios of stress increment. Fitting parameter a presents a piecewise linear relationship with cosine of the slope angle θ determined by instantaneous stress path. The improved hypoplastic model can present peak stress increasing and volumetric strain changing from dilatancy to contractancy with the increase of transitional confining pressure σ3t and the decrease of slope angle θ of stress path. Compared with the test data, it is shown that the model is capable of fully considering the effect of stress path on rockfill.展开更多

A trial embankment is reanalyzed by elastoplastic damage model coupling Blot' s consolidation theory. With the increase in time of loading, the damage accumulation becomes larger. Under the centre and toe of embankment, damage becomes serious. Under the centre of embankment, vertical damage values are bigger than horizontal ones. The physical meaning of the elastic modulus of damaged materials defined in the hypothesis is discussed in this paper. The inapplicability of the hypothesis to be used to determine the damage and its evolution in elasto plastic materials are analyzed. It is emphasized that the method in which the relaxed modulus is taken as the deformed modulus, i.e. the elastic modulus defined in the hypothesis, is only applicable for measuring the damage in elastic materials. A new damage variable is proposed, which is applicable for both elastic and elastoplastic materials.展开更多

The balance equations with three levels (constituents, phases and the whole mixture soil) are set up under the assumption that soil is composed of multi-constituent elastic-plastic solid skeleton (which is different from the linearization method) and viscous liquid and ideal gas. With reasonable constitutive assumptions in such restrictive conditions as the principles of determinism, equipresence, material frame-indifference and the compatible principle in continuum mechanics, a theoretical framework of constitutive relations modeling three-phase soil in both non-equilibrium and equilibrium states is established, thus the closed field equations are formed. In the theoretical framework, the concept of effective generalized thermodynamic forces is introduced, and the nonlinear coupling constitutive relations between generalized dissipation forces and generalized flows within the system at nonequilibrium state are also presented. On such a basis, four special coupling relations, i.e., solid thermal elastic-plastic constitutive relation, liquid visco-elastic-plastic constitutive relation, the generalized Fourier’s law, and the generalized Darcy’s law are put forward. The generalized or nonlinear results mentioned above can degenerate into the linear coupling results given by Bennethum and Singh. Based on a specific dissipation function, the concrete form of generalized Darcy’s law is deduced, which may degenerate into the traditional form of Darcy’s law by neglecting the influence of skeleton deformation and temperature. Without considering temperature and other coupling effects, the nonlinear coupled model in this paper can degenerate into a soil elastic-plastic constitutive model.展开更多

By applying the present constitutive model, the stress-strain curves under uniaxial tension at different temperatures are calculated for the typical crystal A1, and the calculated results are compared with the experimental results. From the comparisons, it can be seen that the present theory has the capability to describe the thermo-elasto-plastic behavior of metal crystals at finite temperature through a concise and explicit calculation process.展开更多
