Intraclonal Resource Sharing and Functional Specialization of Ramets in Response to Resource Heterogeneity in Three Stoloniferous Herbs 被引量:8

Environments with reciprocal patchiness of resources, in which the availability of two resources such as light and soil nutrients are patchily distributed in horizontal space and negatively correlated in each patch, are common in many ecosystems. The strategies by which clonal plants adapt to this type of heterogeneous environment were examined in three stoloniferous herbs,Potentilla reptans L. var. sericophylla Franch., P. anserina L. and Halerpestes ruthenica (Jacq.) Qvcz., commonly inhabiting forest understories, grasslands and low saline meadows, respectively. As pairs of connected ramets were subjected to reciprocal patchiness of light and nutrients, stolon connection between the two ramets significantly enhanced biomass of both ramet growing in low light intensity but high soil nutrient condition (LH ramet) and ramet growing in high light intensity but low soil nutrient condition (HL ramet) as well as whole ramet pairs (consisting of LH ramets and HL ramets). Additionally, stolon connection greatly increased root/shoot ratio of LH ramet while significantly decreased that of HL ramet. The results indicate that a reciprocal transportation of resources between interconnected ramets and a functional specialization of ramets in uptake of abundant resources occurred. By resource sharing and functional specialization, clonal plants can efficiently acquire locally abundant resources and buffer the stress caused by reciprocal patchiness of resources. 展开更多

An approach was presented to intensify the mixing process. Firstly, a novel concept, the dissipation of mass transfer ability(DMA) associated with convective mass transfer, was defined via an analogy to the heat-work conversion. Accordingly, the focus on mass transfer enhancement can be shifted to seek the extremum of the DMA of the system. To this end, an optimization principle was proposed. A mathematical model was then developed to formulate the optimization into a variational problem. Subsequently, the intensification of the mixing process for a gas mixture in a micro-tube was provided to demonstrate the proposed principle. In the demonstration example, an optimized velocity field was obtained in which the mixing ability was improved, i.e., the mixing process should be intensified by adjusting the velocity field in related equipment. Therefore, a specific procedure was provided to produce a mixer with geometric irregularities associated with an ideal velocity. 展开更多

Fracture behavior of FGMs in di... Zirconia/stainless steel (ZrO2/SUS316L) functionally graded materials (FGMs) were fabricated by tape casting and laminating. Microstructures of FGMs were observed by optical microscope. Fracture behavior of FGMs in different loading modes and influences of different gradient changes on flexural strength were investigated. The results show that ZrO2/ SUS316L FGMs with graded components at interlayers are obtained after they are sintered in vacuum and pressureless condition at 1 350 ℃. TheⅠ?Ⅱ mixed mode crack creates in composite layer and grows to both sides zigzag while loading on ZrO2 layer. Flexural strengths are 496.4,421.7 and 387.5 MPa when gradient changes are 10%,15% and 20%,but flexural strengths of the corresponding fracture layers are 387.1,334.6 and 282.3 MPa since cracks of FGMs are affected by three-dimensional stress,respectively. The cracks are generated in ZrO2 layer and extend to SUS316L layer while loading is added on SUS316L layer,flexural strength does not change with the graded components and keeps consistent basically. 展开更多

Well-designed and effective industrial policies, as well as calls for major breakthroughs in institutional mechanisms, must support the development of the service sector. Additionally, excessive burdens and difficult financing channels need to be addressed. Improvement of the heat transfer effect of cold side of a thermoelectric generator(TEG) is one of the approaches to enhance the performance of the TEG systems.As a new type of heat transfer media,nanofluids can enhance the heat transfer performance of working liquid significantly.In this study,the performance of a commercial TEG with graphene-water(GW) nanofluid as coolants in a minichannel heat exchanger is investigated experimentally at low temperatures.The results show that the output power of TEG increases with the flow rate under 950 mL/min.However,the fluid flow rate has no influence on the output power of TEG with higher flow rate(larger than 950 mL/min) when the heat transfer dynamic balance state of the system is reached.The optimal concentration and flow rate of nanofluid are 0.1 wt%and 950 mL/min,respectively.At the optimal conditions,the improved voltage,output power and conversion efficiency with GW nanofluid applied in the cooling system are increased by11.29%,21.55%and 3.5%in comparison with those with only water applied,respectively. 展开更多

Near-infrared (NIR) photothermal therapy has developed very quickly in recent years. However, its clinical applications are hindered by many practical problems, such as low accumulation in tumors, high laser power density and high biotoxicity in vivo. Herein, a versatile system combining chemotherapy with photothermal therapy for cancer therapy using ultrasmall Pd nanosheets (SPNS) has been developed. The SPNS can serve as pH-responsive drug carriers to efficiently deliver DOX into cancer cells and tumors. On the other hand, the coordinative loading of DOX on SPNS enhances its accumulation in tumor tissue. So we can efficiently ablate tumor using low-intensity laser radiation. Importantly, with ultrasmall size (-4.4 nm), SPNS surface-functionalized with reduced glutathione (GSH) can be cleared from the body through the renal system into the urine. This cancer therapeutic nanosystem, which exhibits a significant synergistic effect and low systemic toxicity, has great potential for clinical applications. 展开更多

Catalyst-free and scalable synthesis of graphene on various glass substrates at low temperatures is of paramount significance to numerous applications such as low-cost transparent electronics and state-of-the-art displays. However, systematic study within this promising research field has remained scarce thus far. Herein, we report the direct growth of graphene on various glasses using a low-temperature plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition method. Such a facile and scalable approach guarantees the growth of uniform, transfer-free graphene films on various glass substrates at a growth temperature range of 400-600 ℃. The morphological, surface wetting, optical, and electrical properties of the obtained graphene can be tailored by controlling the growth parameters. Our uniform and high-quality graphene films directly integrated with low-cost, commonly used glasses show great potential in the fabrication of multi-functional electrodes for versatile applications in solar cells, transparent electronics, and smart windows. 展开更多

Objective: To promote stem cells differentiation into neurons and enhance neuromotor function after brain injury through brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) induction. Methods: Recombinant adenovirus vector was applied to the transfection of BDNF into human-derived umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UCMSCs). Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to determine the secretion phase of BDNF. The brain injury model of athymic mice induced by hydraulic pressure percussion was established for transplantation of stem cells into the edge of injury site. Nerve function scores were obtained, and the expression level of transfected and non-transfected BDNF, proportion of neuron specific enolase (NSE) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and the number of apoptosis cells were compared respectively. Results: The BDNF expression achieved its stabilization at a high level 72 hours after gene transfection. The mouse obtained a better score of nerve function, and the proportion of the NSE-positive cells increased significantly (P〈0.05), but GFAP-positive cells decreased in BDNF- UCMSCs group compared with the other two groups (P〈0.05). At the site of high expression of BDNF, the number of apoptosis cells decreased markedly. Conclusion: BDNF gene can promote the differentiation of the stem cells into neurons rather than glial cells, and enhance neuromotor function after brain injury. 展开更多
