On the other hand, some cra...There are many cracked concrete structures worldwide. Although there have been numerous efforts to eliminate cracks, some cracks are very harmful and should be repaired as soon as possible. On the other hand, some cracks are almost harmless. So, a good guideline regarding how to deal with cracks in concrete structures is needed. In this guideline, the practical investigation, repair and strengthening method of cracked concrete structures is discussed. And the detecting subjects are cracks generated immediately after casting and during the service time. This guideline targets on the owners (including managers) of concrete structure and the engineers working for the maintenance of concrete structure. JCI (Japan Concrete Institute) published first version of "Practical Guideline for Investigation and Repair of Cracked Concrete Structures" in 1980, and then the fourth version titled "Practical Guideline for Investigation, Repair and Strengthening of Cracked Concrete Structures--2009" was published. This guideline is very practical when cracks are observed in existing concrete structures, in any other countries as well as in Japan. These three authors led the establishment of this guideline.展开更多

It is urgent to reduce agricultural water use for ecological rehabilitation, which ...Land degradation and desertification have become severe environmental problems in arid areas due to excessive use of water resources. It is urgent to reduce agricultural water use for ecological rehabilitation, which may result in a decrease in agricultural production and farmer's welfare. This paper focused on the impacts of some main measures including extensions of watersaving irrigation, expanding solar green house and increasing off-farm employment, which are generally recognized to be important to alleviate water shortage and poverty. A bioconomic model is applied taking Minqin Oasis in Gansu Province as a case study site. Simulation results showed that the effect of expanding solar greenhouse was more positive than other ones so it drew more attention. On the view of the different effects between each irrigation zone, mixed policy patterns suitable for them are suggested. In Baqu, expanding solar greenhouse should be the most important, auxiliary with encouraging pipe irrigation. Inversely, with regard to Quanshan, the major attention should be paid to subsidy for pipe irrigation and it would be better to supply the off-farm employment opportunities to the households in Huqu, where the expanding of solar greenhouse should also be summoned. Finally, it should be noted that farmer's income would only resume to 90% of the current level in the short run by putting more effort into local policies. Thus, the ecological compensation is needed to ensure farmer's welfare.展开更多

Although some heritage buildings survived, the damage condition was too severe to carry on repair and restore...A large number of towns along the Sanriku coastal line were swept away by tsunami attacks on March 11,2011. Although some heritage buildings survived, the damage condition was too severe to carry on repair and restore them to the owners. As the municipal cultural heritage division and local cultural society in Kesennuma City were looking for possibility to save these damaged heritage buildings, the author gave them full assistance. To apply for fund for the repair and restoration work to related foundations, the author made an investigation of the damage conditions, prepared measured drawings, fundamental restoration plans and cost estimates. Domestic and international foundations granted funds to our projects for three years in May 2012, and we formed a restoration body to take responsibility of repair and restoration work. But soon, we were faced with several difficulties. The first is that we had to wait for a long time until the authority fixed the town redevelopment plan, meeting the National Guideline of Tsunami-Free Redevelopment. The second is that the building cost continued to increase during rapid-development periods. Although the author expected to complete the whole work within three years, the progress is really slow, and has not amounted to a quarter.展开更多

Comparative studies of Japanese mythology have developed since the 1920s above all through eftbrts of Japanese ethnologists. They have paid attention to the possible ethno-cultural complexes that brought mythological ...Comparative studies of Japanese mythology have developed since the 1920s above all through eftbrts of Japanese ethnologists. They have paid attention to the possible ethno-cultural complexes that brought mythological motifs into the archipelago. In the present paper the theories set forth by Nobuhiro Matsumoto, Akihide Mishina, and Masao Oka are examined in terms of retrospect. The result shows that they shared the view that at least three different complexes, based in ancient Yamato, Izumo, and Kyushu respectively, contributed to the formation of Japanese mythology compiled in the 8th century CE (Common Era). Their assumptions were synthesized by Taryo Obayashi in 1961, the hypothesis which has survived until today. In future we should cooperate with other disciplines and address the formation process of Japanese mythology.展开更多

Esophagus defect in rabbits of experimental group was repaired using lung tissue flap with a chitosan tube stent, gross and histological appearance was observed at week 2, 4 and 8 after operation, and barium sulphate X-ray screen was performed at week 10 after operation. Esophagus defect of rabbits in control group was repaired using lung tissue flap with no chitosan tube stent, gross and histological appearance was observed at week 2, 4 and 8 after operation, and barium sulphate X-ray screen was performed at week 10 after operation.RESULTS: In the experimental group, 6 rabbits survived for over two weeks, the lung tissue flap healed esophageal defection, and squamous metaplasia occurred on the surface of lung tissue flap. At week 10 after operation, barium sulphate examination found that barium was fluent through the esophagus with no stricture or back stream, the creeping was good. In the control group, 4 rabbits survived for two weeks, the lung tissue flap healed esophageal defection with fibrous tissue hyperplasia, barium sulphate examination found that barium was fluent through the esophagus with a slight stricture or back stream, and the creeping was not good at week 10 after operation.CONCLUSION: Esophagus defect can be repaired using lung tissue flap with an inner chitosan tube stent.展开更多

How to memorize vocabulary effectively is a troubling issue both for learners and teachers. The experiments show that the more closely connected between pair words, the higher rate of recurrence with correctness. Focusing on the connection of morphemes in Chinese vocabulary teaching can accelerate students' memories of new words. The author believes morpheme teaching is also evidently effective for those Chinese learners using Chinese characters in Japan. However, after examining the order of words with same morphemes in 14 elementary Chinese textbooks, the authors found that current textbooks have not provided a list of words with same morpheme thus imposing learners' memory burden due to learning repetitive words. Meanwhile, this paper proposes "radial networks" among morphemes with same words, also promotes the expansion of vocabulary by morpheme association.展开更多

Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach), a C4 tropical plant, has high dry matter productivity and sustainability without the need for renovating every year due to good overwintering ability and the absence of ...Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach), a C4 tropical plant, has high dry matter productivity and sustainability without the need for renovating every year due to good overwintering ability and the absence of serious pathogens or insects injury. This grass is suitable for multipurpose use, providing forage, bioethanol feedstock and phytoremediation of cadmium (Cd) contaminated soil in Kyushu, Japan. When two cultivars of Napier grass (Wruk wona, WK and Merkeron, ME) were grown in Cd-contaminated soils, dry matter yield and the concentration and uptake of herbage Cd were higher in WK than in ME, and soil Cd concentration was reduced by 14% in a single season of cultivation. A dwarf variety of late-heading type (DL), Napier grass had superior sustainability for more than 5 years in Miyazaki, Japan, and has gradually increased in cultivation areas for both cut-and-carry and grazing herbage production in cooperation with regional communities. Through the extension in several Kyushu areas, DL Napier grass required temperatures above -6.2 ~C for sustainability in winter, based on its threshold response to the lethal minimum temperature. DL Napier grass pasture can be utilized by grazing beef cattle even in early spring with temperate Italian ryegrass inter-sown into its inter-row spaces. Organic digested animal manure or sun-dried leguminous leaves as green manure can replace chemical fertilizers to reduce energy consumption and allow comparable productivity.展开更多

Greenhouse and field trials were conducted to investigate the effect of sole and combined applications of neem-based and conventional compound (NPK 15-15-15) fertilizers on five crops. In another set of treatments, a factorial combination of the neem fertilizer and urea at 30, 60 and 90 kg N ha-1 was applied to maize, millet and sorghum in the field in a randomized complete block design. The results obtained on cowpea and soybean showed that application of 20 kg N hal from the neem-based compound fertilizer produced both grain and haulm yields that were comparable to what was obtained with the application of 30 kg N ha1 from the conventional fertilizer. Based on maize performance, combined application of neem-based and NPK in ratio 0.25:0.75 respectively gave significantly (P 〈 0.01) higher plant height, stem girth, shoot and dry weight compared to other treatment combinations. The causes of the interactions between the two fertilizer sources resulting in added benefits from their mixed rather than sole application could be attributed to improvement in phosphorus availability and other soil conditions.展开更多

The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the principles of training that can be used to prepare players for the physical demands of soccer. Information relating to periodisation is supported by an outline of the strategies used to deliver the acute training stress in a soccer environment. The...In accordance with a revision of the Containers and Packaging Recycling Law, there is an accelerating trend towards charging for plastic shopping bags (PSBs) in Japan for the purpose of reducing their discharge. The objectives of this research were to gauge, by means of a questionnaire survey, the opinions of retailers with regard to charging for PSBs, and to consider future directions for reducing the quantity of waste discharged. A questionnaire survey on charging for PSBs was conducted for retail stores in Shizuoka City. The survey was carried out in two phases. The results of the first phase (August to October 2008) showed that supermarkets were generally positive, while conversely other retailer types were negative. The results of the second phase (November to December, 2010), targeting only supermarkets that had introduced charging after the first survey, showed that there was no major confusion and the shift proceeded relatively smoothly. In addition, the number of customers did not decline on account of charging, and the ratio of shoppers bringing their own reusable "eco bags" jumped dramatically. On these accounts, it is evident that charging for PSBs is an effective means of reducing usage of PSBs. The authors view it as important for the relevant governmental agencies to work towards promoting charging at retailers and simultaneously repeatedly explaining to consumers the necessity for charging.展开更多

Results: Combined scalp and body acupuncture can obtain significantly better effects than body acupuncture alone in relieving spasticity and improving the patients' motor function and ADL (P〈0.01). Conclusion: Combined scalp and body acupuncture has a distinct advantage in relieving spasticity and can improve the patients' motor function and ADL.展开更多

Methods: One hundred patients with post-stroke pharyngeal de...Objective: To observe the clinical efficacy of Gao's nape acupuncture plus swallowing training in treating pharyngeal deglutition disorder after stroke. Methods: One hundred patients with post-stroke pharyngeal deglutition disorder were randomized into a treatment group and a control group, with 50 cases in each group. The two groups both received routine neurological intervention. In addition, the treatment group was given Gao's nape acupuncture plus swallowing training, while the control group was intervened by swallowing training alone. After eight-week treatment, the two groups were observed in terms of the changes in repetitive saliva swallowing test (RSST), modified water swallowing test (MWST), standardized swallowing assessment (SSA) and swallowing-related quality of life (SWAL-QOL). The clinical efficacies of the two groups were also compared. Results: After treatment, the RSST grading, and scores of MWST, SSA and SWAL-QOL changed significantly in both groups (P<0.05 or P<0.01). The RSST grading, and scores of MWSX SSA and SWAL-QOL in the treatment group were significantly different from those in the control group after treatment (P<0.05 or P<0.01). The total effective rate and markedly effective rate were respectively 100.0% and 72.3% in the treatment group, versus 97.9% and 34.0% in the control group. There was a significant differenee in the markedly effective rate between the two groups (P<0.01). The differenee in the clinical efficacy between the two groups was statistically significant (P<0.01). Con elusion: Gao's n ape acupu ncture plus swallowi ng training is an effective approach for post-stroke phary ngeal deglutiti on disorder. Its therapeutic efficacy is more significant than that of swallowing training alone.展开更多

Meth...Objective: To observe the clinical effect of mind-refreshing and orifice-opening needling method plus swallowing disorder therapeutic apparatus for deglutition disorder of stroke patients in convalescence stage. Methods: A total of 136 patients conforming to the inclusion criteria were randomized into three groups by the random number table, including group A of 46 cases, group B of 44 cases and group C of 46 cases. Patients in group A received swallowing disorder therapeutic apparatus treatment, patients in group B received mind-refreshing and orifice-opening needling method treatment, and patients in group C received mind-refreshing and orifice-opening needling method plus swallowing disorder therapeutic apparatus treatment. The treatment was given once a day for 10 d as a course, the whole treatment lasted for 4 courses. Therapeutic evaluation items including water-swallowing test (WST), standardized swallowing assessment (SSA) and modified Barthel index (MBI) were measured before treatment, after treatment and at follow-up visit (2 months after treatment). Results: After treatment, scores of WST and MBI in all three groups increased significantly (all P〈0.05), while the SSA score dropped significantly (all P〈0.05). After treatment and during follow-up visit period, score of WST in group C was significantly higher than that in group A and group B (both P〈0.05), while the difference between group A and group B showed no statistical significance (P〉0.05); the SSA score in group C was substantially lower than that in group A and group B (all P〈0.05), the difference between group A and group B showed no statistical significance (P〉0.05); the MBI scores in group B and group C were substantially higher than that in group A (all P〈0.05), the difference between group B and group C showed no statistical significance (P〉0.05). After treatment and during follow-up visit period, the differences in overall therapeutic effect between group A and group B showed no statistical significance (P〉0.05), while the overall therapeutic effect in group C was substantially better than that in group A and group B (all P〈0.05). Conclusion: Both mind-refreshing and orifice-opening needling method and swallowing disorder therapeutic apparatus can alleviate symptoms of deglutition disorder of stroke patients respectively, and the combination of two methods can improve the therapeutic effect.展开更多

Focusing on the connection of morphemes in Chinese vocabulary teaching can accelerate students' memories of new words. The author believes morpheme teaching is also evidently effective for those Chinese learners using Chinese characters in Japan. However, after examining the order of words with same morphemes in 14 elementary Chinese textbooks, the authors found that current textbooks have not provided a list of words with same morpheme thus imposing learners' memory burden due to learning repetitive words. Meanwhile, this paper proposes "radial networks" among morphemes with same words, also promotes the expansion of vocabulary by morpheme association.

文摘Segmentation of three-dimensional(3D) complicated structures is of great importance for many real applications.In this work we combine graph cut minimization method with a variant of the level set idea for 3D segmentation based on the Mumford-Shah model.Compared with the traditional approach for solving the Euler-Lagrange equation we do not need to solve any partial differential equations.Instead,the minimum cut on a special designed graph need to be computed.The method is tested on data with complicated structures.It is rather stable with respect to initial value and the algorithm is nearly parameter free.Experiments show that it can solve large problems much faster than traditional approaches.
文摘The word globalization and what it stands for is no longer new in the world of today. However, there is still no universal definition of globalization. This has led to erroneously or otherwise, the interchangeable use of the word with internationalization and liberalization. Suffice it therefore to say that globalization is the transcendence of the economic, political, environmental, social and cultural constraints across territories. The task of this paper is essentially to ascertain the level of involvement of Africa via Nigeria in this new international economic power and order. This is necessary because Nigeria particularly, has become a good consumer of information technology which is an essential ingredient of globalization. The issue then is how prepared are the Nigerian languages in the challenges of information technology as demanded by globalization. What are the implications of the order to Nigerian cultural revival and development?
文摘Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach), a C4 tropical plant, has high dry matter productivity and sustainability without the need for renovating every year due to good overwintering ability and the absence of serious pathogens or insects injury. This grass is suitable for multipurpose use, providing forage, bioethanol feedstock and phytoremediation of cadmium (Cd) contaminated soil in Kyushu, Japan. When two cultivars of Napier grass (Wruk wona, WK and Merkeron, ME) were grown in Cd-contaminated soils, dry matter yield and the concentration and uptake of herbage Cd were higher in WK than in ME, and soil Cd concentration was reduced by 14% in a single season of cultivation. A dwarf variety of late-heading type (DL), Napier grass had superior sustainability for more than 5 years in Miyazaki, Japan, and has gradually increased in cultivation areas for both cut-and-carry and grazing herbage production in cooperation with regional communities. Through the extension in several Kyushu areas, DL Napier grass required temperatures above -6.2 ~C for sustainability in winter, based on its threshold response to the lethal minimum temperature. DL Napier grass pasture can be utilized by grazing beef cattle even in early spring with temperate Italian ryegrass inter-sown into its inter-row spaces. Organic digested animal manure or sun-dried leguminous leaves as green manure can replace chemical fertilizers to reduce energy consumption and allow comparable productivity.
文摘Nutrient mining is one of the major threats facing crop production in Africa and inputs of nutrients are required to overcome this constraint. Greenhouse and field trials were conducted to investigate the effect of sole and combined applications of neem-based and conventional compound (NPK 15-15-15) fertilizers on five crops. In another set of treatments, a factorial combination of the neem fertilizer and urea at 30, 60 and 90 kg N ha-1 was applied to maize, millet and sorghum in the field in a randomized complete block design. The results obtained on cowpea and soybean showed that application of 20 kg N hal from the neem-based compound fertilizer produced both grain and haulm yields that were comparable to what was obtained with the application of 30 kg N ha1 from the conventional fertilizer. Based on maize performance, combined application of neem-based and NPK in ratio 0.25:0.75 respectively gave significantly (P 〈 0.01) higher plant height, stem girth, shoot and dry weight compared to other treatment combinations. The causes of the interactions between the two fertilizer sources resulting in added benefits from their mixed rather than sole application could be attributed to improvement in phosphorus availability and other soil conditions.
文摘The complexity of the physical demands of soccer requires the completion of a multi-component training programme. The development, planning, and implementation of such a programme are difficult due partly to the practical constraints related to the competitive schedule at the top level. The effective planning and organisation of training are therefore crucial to the effective delivery of the training stimulus for both individual players and the team. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the principles of training that can be used to prepare players for the physical demands of soccer. Information relating to periodisation is supported by an outline of the strategies used to deliver the acute training stress in a soccer environment. The importance of monitoring to support the planning process is also reviewed.
文摘In accordance with a revision of the Containers and Packaging Recycling Law, there is an accelerating trend towards charging for plastic shopping bags (PSBs) in Japan for the purpose of reducing their discharge. The objectives of this research were to gauge, by means of a questionnaire survey, the opinions of retailers with regard to charging for PSBs, and to consider future directions for reducing the quantity of waste discharged. A questionnaire survey on charging for PSBs was conducted for retail stores in Shizuoka City. The survey was carried out in two phases. The results of the first phase (August to October 2008) showed that supermarkets were generally positive, while conversely other retailer types were negative. The results of the second phase (November to December, 2010), targeting only supermarkets that had introduced charging after the first survey, showed that there was no major confusion and the shift proceeded relatively smoothly. In addition, the number of customers did not decline on account of charging, and the ratio of shoppers bringing their own reusable "eco bags" jumped dramatically. On these accounts, it is evident that charging for PSBs is an effective means of reducing usage of PSBs. The authors view it as important for the relevant governmental agencies to work towards promoting charging at retailers and simultaneously repeatedly explaining to consumers the necessity for charging.
文摘Objective: To investigate the acupuncture effect for post-apoplectic spasticity. Methods: Modified Ashworth spasticity rating, Brunnstrom grades, Barthel ADL (Activity of Daily Living) indexes were employed to assess the spasticity, motor function and activities of daily living (ADL), and thus observe the effect of combined scalp and body acupuncture for post-apoplectic hemiplegic patients. Results: Combined scalp and body acupuncture can obtain significantly better effects than body acupuncture alone in relieving spasticity and improving the patients' motor function and ADL (P〈0.01). Conclusion: Combined scalp and body acupuncture has a distinct advantage in relieving spasticity and can improve the patients' motor function and ADL.
文摘Objective: To observe the clinical efficacy of Gao's nape acupuncture plus swallowing training in treating pharyngeal deglutition disorder after stroke. Methods: One hundred patients with post-stroke pharyngeal deglutition disorder were randomized into a treatment group and a control group, with 50 cases in each group. The two groups both received routine neurological intervention. In addition, the treatment group was given Gao's nape acupuncture plus swallowing training, while the control group was intervened by swallowing training alone. After eight-week treatment, the two groups were observed in terms of the changes in repetitive saliva swallowing test (RSST), modified water swallowing test (MWST), standardized swallowing assessment (SSA) and swallowing-related quality of life (SWAL-QOL). The clinical efficacies of the two groups were also compared. Results: After treatment, the RSST grading, and scores of MWST, SSA and SWAL-QOL changed significantly in both groups (P<0.05 or P<0.01). The RSST grading, and scores of MWSX SSA and SWAL-QOL in the treatment group were significantly different from those in the control group after treatment (P<0.05 or P<0.01). The total effective rate and markedly effective rate were respectively 100.0% and 72.3% in the treatment group, versus 97.9% and 34.0% in the control group. There was a significant differenee in the markedly effective rate between the two groups (P<0.01). The differenee in the clinical efficacy between the two groups was statistically significant (P<0.01). Con elusion: Gao's n ape acupu ncture plus swallowi ng training is an effective approach for post-stroke phary ngeal deglutiti on disorder. Its therapeutic efficacy is more significant than that of swallowing training alone.
文摘Objective: To observe the clinical effect of mind-refreshing and orifice-opening needling method plus swallowing disorder therapeutic apparatus for deglutition disorder of stroke patients in convalescence stage. Methods: A total of 136 patients conforming to the inclusion criteria were randomized into three groups by the random number table, including group A of 46 cases, group B of 44 cases and group C of 46 cases. Patients in group A received swallowing disorder therapeutic apparatus treatment, patients in group B received mind-refreshing and orifice-opening needling method treatment, and patients in group C received mind-refreshing and orifice-opening needling method plus swallowing disorder therapeutic apparatus treatment. The treatment was given once a day for 10 d as a course, the whole treatment lasted for 4 courses. Therapeutic evaluation items including water-swallowing test (WST), standardized swallowing assessment (SSA) and modified Barthel index (MBI) were measured before treatment, after treatment and at follow-up visit (2 months after treatment). Results: After treatment, scores of WST and MBI in all three groups increased significantly (all P〈0.05), while the SSA score dropped significantly (all P〈0.05). After treatment and during follow-up visit period, score of WST in group C was significantly higher than that in group A and group B (both P〈0.05), while the difference between group A and group B showed no statistical significance (P〉0.05); the SSA score in group C was substantially lower than that in group A and group B (all P〈0.05), the difference between group A and group B showed no statistical significance (P〉0.05); the MBI scores in group B and group C were substantially higher than that in group A (all P〈0.05), the difference between group B and group C showed no statistical significance (P〉0.05). After treatment and during follow-up visit period, the differences in overall therapeutic effect between group A and group B showed no statistical significance (P〉0.05), while the overall therapeutic effect in group C was substantially better than that in group A and group B (all P〈0.05). Conclusion: Both mind-refreshing and orifice-opening needling method and swallowing disorder therapeutic apparatus can alleviate symptoms of deglutition disorder of stroke patients respectively, and the combination of two methods can improve the therapeutic effect.
