The effects of precipitates on the fatigue crack growth rate of AA 7055 Al alloy subjected to different ageing treatments were investigated using transmission electron microscope and fatigue crack growth testing. The results show that the T77 treated samples exhibit the lowest crack growth rate, while the crack growth rate of over-aged samples is the highest. In terms of the model based on the reversibility of dislocation motion within the plastic zone close to the crack tip,the improved crack growth resistance is attributed to many precipitates that are coherent with Al matrix in the under-aged and T77 treated samples. When the precipitate is coherent with the Al matrix, the larger the precipitate is,the slower the fatigue crack grows. The effects of grain boundary precipitates and precipitate free zone on the fatigue crack growth resistance are less significant than those of precipitates within grains of the alloy. 展开更多

The present research is focused on the numerical crack coalescence analysis of the micro-cracks and cracks produced during the cutting action of TBM disc cutters. The linear elastic fracture mechanics(LEFM) concepts and the maximum tangential stress criterion are used to investigate the micro crack propagation and its direction underneath the excavating discs. A higher order displacement discontinuity method with quadratic displacement discontinuity elements is used to estimate the stress intensity factors near the crack tips. Rock cutting mechanisms under single and double type discs are simulated by the proposed numerical method. The main purposes of the present modeling are to simulate the chip formation process of indented rocks by single and double discs. The effects of specific disc parameters(except speed) on the thrust force Ft, the rolling force Fr, and the specific energy ES are investigated. It has been shown that the specific energy(energy required to cut through a unit volume of rock) of the double disc is less than that of the single disc. Crack propagation in rocks under disc cutters is numerically modeled and the optimum ratio of disc spacing S to penetration depth Pd(i.e. S/Pd ratio) of about 10 is obtained, which is in good agreement with the theoretical and experimental results cited in the literature. 展开更多

The aim of the present work is to evaluate the fatigue crack growth behaviour of 12 mm thick AA 7075-T651 aluminium alloy plates joined by FSW. Fatigue crack growth test was carried out on center cracked tensile (CCT) specimens extracted from the FSW joints and unwelded parent metal. Transverse tensile properties of the unwelded parent metal and welded joints were evaluated. Microstructures of the welded joints were analyzed using optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The scanning electron microscope was used to characterize the fracture surfaces. It was found that the ΔKcr of the welded joint is reduced by 10×10-3 MPa·m1/2 in comparison with the unwelded parent metal. Hence, the fatigue life of the friction stir welded AA 7075-T651aluminium alloy joints is appreciably lower than that of the unwelded parent metal, which is attributed to the dissolution of precipitates in the weld region during friction stir welding. 展开更多

Al-Zn-Mg-Sc-Zr alloy samples were annealed to four different states (under-aging, peak-aging, over-aging and double-aging) and then thoroughly investigated by means of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), tensile and fatigue crack growth rate tests to explore the influence of annealing treatment on microstmcture and fatigue crack growth behavior. The results indicate that Al3(Sc,Zr) particles can effectively refine grains and enhance tensile properties and fatigue properties. After annealing treatment, the under-aged sample and double-aged sample obtained average grain sizes of 4.9473 and 4.1257 μm, and the maximum value of yield/tensile strength (561 MPa/581 MPa) was obtained in peak-aged state. In the Paris region, fatigue crack growth rate, crack deflection and bifurcation, crack blunting and inter/trans-granular propagation were discussed based on data fitting and Laird model and Griffith theory. And the results show that the under-aged sample possesses the best resistance to fatigue crack propagation and the most tortuous and bifurcated crack path. For all samples, the fatigue crack growth rate in the rupture region was inversely proportional to yield strength. 展开更多

These are premium pearlitic, austenitic manganese (AM) and bainitic rail steels. Rectangular un-notched and notched test specimens were machined from railheads of each material using electrical discharge machining (EDM) and used for the mechanical properties and fatigue evaluation respectively. Bainitic steel has the highest yield strength, ultimate strength, and strain to failure as compared to both pearlitic and austenitic manganese steels. Fatigue studies showed that the crack speed for the bainitic steel is lower than that for the pearlitie and the AM steels over the entire range of the energy release rate. The bainitic steel exhibits a higher rate of crack deceleration in the second stage, as indicated by the lower slope of the fatigue crack propagation kinetics curve in comparison with the pearlitic and manganese rail steels. This attests to the superior fatigue damage tolerance of the bainitic rail steel in comparison to pearlitic and austenitic manganese rail steels. Microstructural analysis of the three rail steels revealed that bainitic steel has a more intricate structure than AM and pearlitic steels. AM steel shows very few signs of being work hardened or toughened, which usually increases the mechanical properties of the material. As the number of alloying elements increase, the microstructure of the steel becomes more complex, resulting in the increase of mechanical properties and fatigue fracture resistance of bainitic rail steel. 展开更多

The formalism of the earlier fatigue crack growth models is retained to account for multiscaling of the fatigue process that involves the creation of macrocracks from the accumulation of micro damage. The effects of at least two scales, say micro to macro, must be accounted for.The same data can thus be reinterpreted by the invariancy of the transitional stress intensity factors such that the microcracking and macrocracking data would lie on a straight line. The threshold associated with the sigmoid curve disappears.Scale segmentation is shown to be a necessity for addressing multiscale energy dissipative processes such as fatigue and creep.Path independency and energy release rate are monoscale criteria that can lead to unphysical results, violating the first principles.Application of monoscale failure or fracture criteria to nanomaterials is taking toll at the expense of manufacturing super strength and light materials and structural components. This brief view is offered in the spirit of much needed additional research for the reinforcement of materials by creating nanoscale interfaces with sustainable time in service. The step by step consideraton at the different scales may offer a better understanding of the test data and their limitations with reference to space and time. 展开更多

When two contacting solid surfaces are tightly closed and invisible to the naked eye, the discontinuity is said to be microscopic regardless of whether its length is short or long. By this definition, it is not sufficient to distinguish the difference between a micro- and macro-crack by using the length parameter. Microcracks in high strength metal alloys have been known to be sev- eral centimeters or longer. Considered in this work is a dual scale fatigue crack growth model where the main crack can be mi- cro or macro but there prevails an inherent microscopic tip region that is damaged depending on the irregularities of the micro- structure. This region is referred to as the "micro-tip" and can be simulated by a sharp wedge with different angles in addition to mixed boundary conditions. The combination is sufficient to model microscopic entities in the form of voids, inclusions, precipitations, interfaces, in addition to subgrain imperfections, or cluster of dislocations. This is accomplished by using the method of "singularity representation" such that closed form asymptotic solutions can be obtained for the development of fa- tigue crack growth rate relations with three parameters. They include: (1) the crack surface tightness o-* represented by Cro/Cr~ = 0.3-0.5 for short cracks in region I, and 0.1-0.2 for long cracks in region II, (2) the micro/macro material properties reflected by the shear modulus ratio/1" (=,L/micro/]-/macro varying between 2 and 5) and (3) the most sensitive parameter d* being the micro-tip characteristic length d* (=d/do) whose magnitude decreases in the direction of region I ---~II. The existing fatigue crack growth data for 2024-T3 and 7075-T6 aluminum sheets are used to reinterpret the two-parameter da/dN=C(AK)n relation where AK has now been re-derived for a microcrack with surfaces tightly in contact. The contact force will depend on the mean stress ~m or mean stress ratio R as the primary parameter and on the stress amplitude era as the secondary parameter. 展开更多
