[Objective] The paper was to study the dynamic changes of forage nutrient substance fermentation in rumen, and a set of continuous culture system of artificial rumen was designed. [Method] With in vivo as control, the simulating rumen fer- mentation effect in vitro culture system was evaluated. [Result] The simulation rumen fermentation test needed adaptive phase of 2-3 d, and the fermentation state was relatively stable within 3-9 d, with good effects. The test showed certain regularity variation with index value of rumen in vivo. [Conclusion] The continuous culture sys- tem of artificial rumen could be used as the ideal model to study the rumen fermen- tation in vivo. 展开更多

AIM:To evaluate gastric motility using electrical bioimpedance(EBI) and gastric changes as a result of stress induced by psychological tests.METHODS:A group of 57 healthy women, aged 40-60 years, was recruited, and a clinical history and physical examination were performed. The women were free from severe anxiety, chronic or acute stress, severe depression, mental diseases and conditions that affect gastric activity. The women were evaluated under fasting conditions, and using a four-electrode configuration, the gastric signals were obtained through a BIOPAC MP-150 system. The volunteers were evaluated using the following paradigm:basal state, recording during the Stroop Test, intermediate resting period, recording during the Raven Test, and a final resting period. We analyzed the relative areas of the frequency spectrum:A1(1-2 cpm),A2(2-4 cpm),A3(4-8 cpm),and A4(8-12 cpm),as well as the median of area A2 + A3.The data were analyzed by an autoregressive method using a Butterworth filter with MatLab and Origin.Analysis of variance(ANOVA) and Friedman ANOVA(for nonparametric variables) were performed;in addition, pairs of groups were compared using the T dependent and Wilcoxon T tests.RESULTS:The results of the main values of area A2 were not significantly different comparing the five steps of the experimental paradigm.Nevertheless, there was a tendency of this A2 region to decrease during the stress tests, with recuperation at the final resting step. When an extended gastric region was considered(1-4 cpm),significant differences with the psychological stress tests were present(F = 3.85,P = 0.005).The A3 region also showed significant changes when the stress psychological tests were administered(F = 7.25,P < 0.001).These differences were influenced by the changes in the adjacent gastric region of A2.The parameter that we proposed in previous studies for the evaluation of gastric motility by electrical bio-impedance(EBI) was the median of the area under the region from 2 to 8 cpm(A2 + A3).The mean values of these frequencies(median of the A2 + A3 area) with the stress test showed significant changes(F = 5.5,P < 0.001).The results of the WilcoxonT test for the A4 area parameter, which is influenced by the breathing response, changed significantly during the Raven stress test(P < 0.05).CONCLUSION:We confirm that the gastric response to acute psychological stress can be evaluated by short-term EBI. 展开更多

Objective In order to characterize the feature of stress response induced by stressor with both physical and psychological natures, the effect of water restriction performed in different experimental modes on the physiological parameters, psychological behavioral manifestations and brain c-Fos expressions were observed and compared. Methods 58 male Wistar rats were used and randomly divided into three experimental groups (n=18 for each) and a control group (n=4). In control group, the rats were allowed to access drinking water freely at all experimental period. In the experimental groups the water supply to the rats was restricted. In timed water supply (TW) group, the water was supplied twice a day, 10 min for each in fixed hours every day. In empty bottle-served (EB) and water-restricted (WR) groups, the water was served only once a day for 10 min, either in the early morning or evening, and in the other time point scheduled for water supply only an empty bottle without water was provided in the EB group and nothing was given in the WR group. The quantities of drank water and eaten food, weight-gaining, and behavior score were observed every day. The serum level of corticosterone was assayed and the rats were sacrificed with fixative perfusion of 3 d, 7 d or 14 d respectively, following water restriction (n=6 for each time point in each group). The brain c-Fos expressions were examined with immunohistochemistry. Results The slowing down of weight-gaining, rise of serum corticosterone level, occurrence of psychological behavioral manifestations of unpeaceful restlessness such as exploring and attacking, enhance of c-Fos expression in the subfomical organ (SFO), median preoptic nucleus (MnPO), area postrema (AP), hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN), supraoptic nucleus (SON), medial (MeA) and central (CeA) amygdaloid nucleus and ventrolateral septum (LSV) were noticed in both EB and WR groups, except the nucleus of solitary tract (NTS) in which the Fos expression was decreased. The changes of Fos expression in most of nuclei in EB group began at day 3, at least persisted till day 7, and backed down at day 14. While in WR group, similar changes started at day 7 and reached its peak at day 14. In TW group, only the concentration of corticosterone at day 7 was slightly increased and the rest indexes observed were unchanged. Conclusion The results indicate that water restriction induces physical as well as psychological stress responses. And the water restrictions experimentally executed in different modes result in different manifestations of behavioral response and brain immediately early gene expression in discrete brain nuclei/regions. 展开更多

Objective. To investigate the protective effects of melatonin(MT )on cardiomyocytes against the ox-idative injury induced by H 2 O 2 .Methods.Ventricular myocytes were isolated from neonatal rats and cultured for3~5days.Cells were divided into4groups:control group,H 2 O 2 (100μmol/L H 2 O 2 )group,MT group(100μmol/L MT )and MT preconditioning group(100μmol/L MT+100μmol/L H 2 O 2 ).The fluorescent probe,DCFH?DA,was used to detect intracellular levels of reactive oxygen species(ROS)and another fluorescent probe,Fluo-3?AM,was used to detect[Ca 2+ ] i by using a laser scanning confocal microscopy(LSCM).The malondi-aldehyde(MDA)content in cardiomyocytes was determined by measuring thiobarbituric acid?reactive sub-stances to monitor lipid peroxidation. The activity of cytoplasmic enzyme lactate dehydrogenase(LDH)that was released into the culture media was assayed to indicate alternation in the integrity of the cellular membrane.Trypan blue exclusion was used to detect the cell viability.Results.Compared with the control group, intracellular ROS,[Ca 2+ ] i ,MDA content ,LDH leakage and cell death were significantly elevated when cells were treated by100μmol/L H 2 O 2 for60minutes(P<0.01).However,those changes were significantly attenuated in MT preconditioning group.Conclusion.MT has very good antioxidant effect and can protect the cardiomyocytes against H 2 O 2 -in-duced injury. 展开更多

To determine the effects of losartan and captopril treatment on ventricular remodeling and function after myocardial infarction in rats. Methods. Thirty-two rats with MI induced by coronary ligation after seven days were divided into four groups randomly and treated with captopril(2 g. liter-1, group A), losartan(10 mg. kg-1. d-1, group B), losartan(30 mg. kg-1. d-1,group C) and placebo (no drug, group D) for six weeks, respectively. Shamoperated rats(group E)served as controls. Echocardiography was performed at 1 and 7 weeks after MI, re- spectively. Results. Compared with the results before treatment, both LV end-diastolic internal diameter and volume decreased significantly and the thickened Posterior wall was reversed in group A, B and C; the peak early filling velocity decreased whereas the peak velocity was increased in these three groups. There are no significant difference among the three treated groups. However,LV end-diastolic internal diameter and the E/A were still increased, whereas the thickness of anterior wall and the peak velocity of LV outflow were decreased in group A,B,and C after treatment comparing with group E. Conclusion. Both angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor and angiotensin II receptor antagonist can prevent the ventricular remodeling and improve the ventricular function. 展开更多

Phenomenal Consciousness, Self-Consciousness and Animal Suffering

In this article I will confront Antonio Damasio's theory (exposed in his last book Self Comes to Mind) with the criticism it received from Ned Block. The latter holds that Damasio does not distinguish the concepts of phenomenal consciousness and self-consciousness and this has two kinds of consequences. One is that it cannot satisfactorily explain certain mental states (dreams, vegetative states); the other is that it has harmful consequences for animal ethics. I maintain that to compare the two theories we can only rely on our pre-theoretical intuition of consciousness. Thus, I argue that Dam^tsio's theory combines more with our intuitions. One of the reasons is that the cases that Block describes as phenomenal consciousness without access consciousness (and without self-consciousness) are best explained as being cases of mind without consciousness. Dam^sio's theory can also explain those referred cases which are theoretically problematic. Moreover, Dam^isio has a threshold model (an expression by Barry Dainton), which is something that Block seems to ignore. This model fits well with the intuitions and neurological knowledge that we normally have on animal consciousness. Dam^isio's core self and his theory of emotions and feelings allow us to understand why we feel compassion for animals. Therefore, we are able to develop an animal ethics, which does not mean that we are required to do so. So even though Damasio does not solve the mystery of consciousness, he should not be the subject of Block's criticism. 展开更多

Based on research conducted by the author in the last thirty-five years, this article presents the physicochemical mechanisms of the osteoporosis process, transport of substances created as its result, and the phenomena of tissue mineralization resulting from osteoporosis. Examination of bones, joint cartilage, arteries, veins, parts of heart, thyroid, salivary glands, various tumors and others was conducted with the use of biological and polarizing microscopy, SEM, EDS, ASA, IR, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Several devices of the same kind, e.g. different types of SEM, were used. Specimens used for examination were obtained from post-surgery and post rnortem materials. Examination of human bones focused on their mineralization and demineralization (osteoporosis). Examination of the mineralization of other tissues was conducted in terms of the ageing of human body. Obtained results show that the process of osteoporosis leads not just to mechanical degradation of bones, but through the transport of ions (mainly Ca and P), it also causes mineralization of soft tissue. Such mineralization occurs in mineralization centers that have been classified in regard to genetics. Tissue mineralization in its first stage is latent and consists of including atoms, mainly Ca and P, into the biological structures of compounds that build the tissues. Latent mineralization may evolve into the next stage--apparent mineralization. Both types of mineralization cause many health issues and may lead to death. This article also presents initial results of research on dissolution of aortic mineralization. 展开更多

The average-passage equation system(APES)provides a rigorous framework to account for the deterministic unsteady effects by the so-called deterministic correlations(DC),which include both deterministic stress correlations(DCS)and deterministic total enthalpy correlations(DCH).These correlations should be modeled to close the system of equations. In this paper, the distribution of DC in a transonic centrifugal compressor is presented, and its relative importance is revealed. The assumption made by Adamczyk that the pure unsteady fluctuation is significantly smaller than the spatial fluctuation is verified at the impeller-diffuser interface. The decomposition of DCH is also discussed to determine its two different physical mechanisms. Finally, the transport equations in terms of DCS in cylindrical coordinates are derived, and the terms are evaluated to determine the ones that are necessary to model. All these analyses significantly contribute to our model development for DC in centrifugal compressors. 展开更多
