In this episode, Maggie has to be faced with all the important relations of her life, each making different claims on her conscience. It is also the critical moment when Maggie achieves sober self-knowledge, therefore coming to the hardest decision in the choice between family, love and friendship. It juxtaposes illusion and reality through multiple levels of overlapping in images and scenes, which illustrates how unconscious feelings work effect on Maggie's conscious action. This episode is typical of George Eliot's literary presentation of unconscious, which not only reveals her keen observation of human psyche, but also demonstrates the general achievement of the 19th century psychologists in the related field.展开更多

"The Tell-Tale Heart" (2007) is one such tale. Behind the mask of the narrator lies the dangerous, diabolical, and premeditated crime of the sadist. Most critics neglected to highlight the sadistic complex which manifests itself with outstanding clarity in the character Poe presents. Instead, they chose to focus on other aspects of his character, namely, his disturbed mental state. Yet, to dismiss a perversion such as sadism is to lose sight of Poe's legitimate merits as a criminal psychologist. This study highlights this point Through an interdisciplinary approach between criminology and literature, the study examines Poe's work from the criminological tradition represented by such figures as Richard von Krafft-Ebing, Paul De River, Carol Anne Davis, Karl Berg, Peter Vronsky, Julie Harrower, Curt R. Bartol, and others. The study is based upon criminological insights derived from and supported by actual case histories, and thus, is extremely important in bridging the gap between literature and criminology展开更多

In America, the design of spirals seems to have been used previous to Archimedes' time, although in the Northwest of Argentina the appearance of this figure in ceramics can be dated between the years 800 and 1,400 (AD). The spiral is found in cave paintings, in pumpkin carvings and in pottery, particularly those painted inside of plates (pucos in Quechua language). There can be seen simple linear spirals, double spirals and spirals filled with squares, spirals in two, facing each other symmetrically, as well as spirals joined to bodies of animals. The number of spires detected in the largest spiral is 12, a number of evidently sacred characteristics. When there are several spirals in an earthenware vessel, it can be seen that all of them spin to the same side whether it is clockwise or not. This could have been caused by the predominance of the use of either one hand or the other by the ancient artist. This paper is produced with computer methods used to design spirals in the computer, either Archimedes or the logarithmic ones. Finally, the book: “Man and his symbols” of the psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) help to understand this congruencies. In this paper, Mathematics is complemented with the Archeology of art and Psychology.展开更多

But, for a long time, physicists do not find a reliable way to measure the magnitude of the interaction radius of a resonance. In this paper, a method is proposed to measure the interaction radius in physics analysis. It is found that the centrifugal barrier effects have great influence to physical results obtained in the PWA fit, and the interaction radius of some resonances can be well measured in the fit.展开更多

This paper questions whether any such transformation can be identified in ancient Greece. It focuses on texts associated with "mystery religions" and the works of Presocratic philosophers as potential evidence for transformation. It demonstrates that there was a continuity of thought throughout the period, and that "rationality" was never seen to be in conflict with "traditional religious ideas".展开更多

Organic electroluminescent material, one of the centerpieces of OLEDs, has been the focus of studies by many material scientists. To obtain high luminosity and to keep material costs low, a few remarkable design concepts have been developed. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials were invented to overcome the common fluorescence-quenching problem, and cross-dipole stacking of fluorescent molecules was shown to be an effective method to get high solid-state luminescence. To exceed the limit of internal quantum efficiency of conventional fluorescent materials, phosphorescent materials were successfully applied in highly efficient electroluminescent devices. Most recently, delayed flu- orescent materials via reverse-intersystem crossing (RISC) from triplet to singlet and the "hot exciton" materials based on hy- bridized local and charge-transfer (HLCT) states were developed to he a new generation of low-cost luminescent materials as efficient as phosphorescent materials. In terms of the device-fabrication process, solution-processible small molecular lumi- nescent materials possess the advantages of high purity (vs. polymers) and low procession cost (vs. vacuum deposition), which are garnering them increasing attention. Herein, we review the progress of the development of small-molecule luminescent materials with different design concepts and features, and also briefly examine future development tendencies of luminescent materials.展开更多

Despite advances in the therapy and care of heart failure, morbidity and mortality remain persistently high. Recent years have witnessed major breakthroughs in the investigations of pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment of heart failure in China. It is noteworthy that the continuing and growing support from funding agencies in China including the National Natural Science Foundation of China has yielded substantial effects on the basic and clinical research in heart failure in the last decade. In this review, we provide an update on the current status of heart failure research, both basic and translational/clinical, in China, including funding and publications. We also discuss the future challenges and possible strategies in improving our understanding and management of heart failure in China.展开更多

We address the question of well-posedness for large data having critical Besov regularity. Our result improves N the analysis of Danchin and of the author inasmuch as we may take initial density in BN/p p,1 with 1 ≤ p 〈 +∞. Our result relies on a new a priori estimate for the velocity, where we introduce a new unknown called effective velocity to weaken one of the couplings between the density and the velocity. In particular, our result is the first in which we obtain uniqueness without imposing hypothesis on the gradient of the density.展开更多

In multi-dimensional space, (x1/√1+t) is called a planar diffusion wave. In the first part of the present paper, it is shown that under some smallness conditions, such a planar diffusion wave is nonlinearly stable for the nonlinear heat equation: ut -△f(u) = 0, x ∈ R^n. The optimal time decay rate is obtained. In the second part of this paper, it is further shown that this planar diffusion wave is still nonlinearly stable for the quasilinear wave equation with damping: utt + ut - △f(u) = 0, x ∈ R^n. The time decay rate is also obtained. The proofs are given by an elementary energy method.展开更多
