The resistivity, formation factor, and resistivity index of rocks were calculated using the finite element method (FEM) and we studied the effect of rock wettability on electrical properties. The numerical simulation results indicate that the simulated formation factor and resistivity index of the water wet rock agrees well with experiments over the whole range of water saturation and extends the traditional resistivity experiment. The rock wettablilty has a large influence on the rock resistivity index. The resistivity and saturation exponent of oil wet rock are obviously larger than three of water wet rock.展开更多

A development-course observation of the morphological changes in the nucellar cells undergoing PCD to form pollen chamber was performed. During the PCD, the nucellar cells degraded their cellular components through an orderly progression. Through the vactiolation, the cytosol was engulfed by the enlarging vacuole, leaving out various organelles, which remained morphologically integrated. As the vacuolation continued, the vacuole collapsed with the breakage of the tonoplast and the cytosol disappeared completely. Organelles were subsequently destroyed. Ultimately, nucellar cells digested away all of their cytoplasm, leaving with cell walls. They became collapsed as the nucellus developed. Intracellular membranes were strikingly changed, playing a role in leading to cell death. Some of these noticeable changes were the appearance of multivesicular body, multicycle-like membranes, membrane-bounded bodies containing some organelles, tonoplast rupture and numerous vesicles. The dehiscence of the apical epidermis, resulting in the opening, appeared to have followed two different pathways with one involving a specific epidermal cell autolysis and the other by detachment from middle lamella of two neighboring epidermal cells without cell autolysis. The specific epidermal cells had been dead prior to the dehiscence of the apical epidermis, which marked the sites of the dehiscence followed. In view of the changes in the cellular morphology, a process of nucellar cell PCD in the course of the pollen chamber formation was demonstrated.展开更多

METHODS: An epidemiological survey with respect to nutritional and psychological status in patients with gastrointestinal cancer was conducted among 182 operated patients in four provincial-level hospitals from December 2005 to June 2006. The food frequency survey method, state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI) and depression status inventory (DSI) were used to obtain information about the diet and psychological status in the patients. Nutritional status in the participants was reflected by serum albumin (Alb), hemoglobin (HB) and body mass index (BMI). RESULTS: Alb, protein intake and anxiety were associated with the severity of side effects of treatment. The adjusted relative risk (RR) for Alb, protein intake and anxiety was 3.30 (95% CI: 1.08, 10.10, P = 0.03), 3.25 (95% CI: 1.06, 9.90, P = 0.04) and 1.48 (95% CI: 1.29, 1.70, P < 0.0001), respectively. Moreover, calorie intake, HB and depression were associated with the recovery of physical performance status in the patients. Adjusted relative risk was 2.12 (95% CI: 1.09, 4.03, P = 0.028), 2.05 (95% CI: 1.08, 3.88, P =0.026) and 1.07 (95% CI: 1.02, 1.12, P = 0.007), respectively. CONCLUSION: Both poor nutrition status and psychological status are independent risk factors for severe side effects of cancer treatment, and have impact on the recovery of physical performance status in patients after treatment.展开更多

"The Tell-Tale Heart" (2007) is one such tale. Behind the mask of the narrator lies the dangerous, diabolical, and premeditated crime of the sadist. Most critics neglected to highlight the sadistic complex which manifests itself with outstanding clarity in the character Poe presents. Instead, they chose to focus on other aspects of his character, namely, his disturbed mental state. Yet, to dismiss a perversion such as sadism is to lose sight of Poe's legitimate merits as a criminal psychologist. This study highlights this point Through an interdisciplinary approach between criminology and literature, the study examines Poe's work from the criminological tradition represented by such figures as Richard von Krafft-Ebing, Paul De River, Carol Anne Davis, Karl Berg, Peter Vronsky, Julie Harrower, Curt R. In the first scheme, two partial entangled four-particle states are used as quantum channels, while in the second scheme, four non-maximally entangled particle pairs are considered as quantum channels. It is shown that the teleportation can be successfully realized with certain probability, for both schemes, if a receiver adopts some appropriate unitary transformations. It is also shown that the successful probabilities of these two schemes are different.展开更多

Proclaiming the spirit of ecopsychology, Theodore Roszak argues that psychotherapy is an urban movement, but human beings can never heal themselves until they reconnect with nature. Other therapies aim at healing the alienation between person and person, person and family, person and society; ecopsychology intends to heal the more primary alienation between the person and the natural environment. Henri Lefebvre's work has revitalized urban studies, geography and planning via concepts like the social production of space. Lefebvre claims that space is not an inert, neutral, and pre-existing given, but rather, an on-going production of spatial relations. According to Lefebvre, space is produced by three types of practice: spatial practices of physical transformation of the environment, practices of representation of space, and everyday practices of representational space. Lefebvre further presents a "differential space," named as such for its dialectical resistance to the forces of homogenization present in "abstract space." The aim of this paper is to trace the ecological voice from Roszak's The Voice of the Earth in Henri Lefebvre's "differential space." Roszak's ecopsychology has formed a differential space, acknowledging that the boundaries of dualism and separations such as mind and body, man and nature should be finally dissolved in terms of ecological sustainability. Within this space, a holistic approach and thinking are created and required to take into account perception of the inextricable relationship between all life and all phenomena.展开更多

During the feature extraction of QRS complex, baseline drifts were firstly removed from raw ECG records by a mathematical morphology method and the feature sub-band of QRS complex was separated by using wavelet transform. Then an evolving Lorentz differential deconvolution technique was applied to estimating the local features of QRS complex from this sub-band. During the feature extraction of P and T waves, the above steps were similarly employed and, before wavelet transform, QRS complex was eliminated through locating their positions to avoid relevant disturbance. The proposed technique achieved a recognition of 99.37% for QRS recognition and a detection rate of 98.62% for P waves detection when tested with the MIT/BIH Database. And validated with the QT Database, the results of QT intervals detection also showed an obvious improvement (85.26% when target domain less than 14 ms and 95.34% when target domain less than 28 ms separately on average).展开更多

Methods 4-week-old mice were infected four times intraperitoneally with a timedependent dose and killed at the 10th, 30th and 60th day after the final infection respectively, then we examined the heart changes and collagen hyperplasia by HE, VG stain and 1HC. Results Heart damage appeared very serious at the tenth day, even there were small necrotic foci at the day of 30th, but we could not see any injury of heart 2 months later after final infection. Collagen turned up at the tenth day and there was much more collagen in heart and increased PCVA, CVF index at the sixtieth day. The 1HC of collagen demonstrated the collagen I hyperplasia was much obvious compared to collagen Ⅲ. Conclusion It strongly indicated that repetitive infection of CVB3m could lead to heart fibrosis and ventricular remodeling, which resulted in decreased systolic and diastolic function of heart.展开更多

The predicament of modern ecological literature and cultural theory is that there no linguistic theory to rely on. Biolinguistics emphasize the two-way interaction between language and environment, regard language as the intermediate link between nature and culture. It combines the "environment" of language with nature and social psychology. Thus this theory studies beyond such one-way determinism of traditional linguistics as "the world constructed language" or "language of the construction of the world," concerning the relationship between language and the world. It also goes beyond the dualism of "naturatness" of language and "agreement" of the issue to become the real eco-dialectical linguistic theory with rich "argument" . This theory can help people better understand the relationship between text and the world, nature and culture, natural ecology and social spiritual ecology. Therefore it is a basic theory of modern literature, cultural studies, as well as one of the most leading and challenging issue for the study of ecological poetic and culture abroad.展开更多

The same issue also appears in the Islamic theological works known "kalam". There are two main semantical approaches regarding the theological doctrines in the Islamic thought. However the theological reasons are the primary aims in these semantical works, but they include serious philosophical and linguistic content. One of them is the main Islamic strand (orthodox Islam) represented by some astonishing Islamic scholars such as Ici, Guwaini, Sahristani, Ghazali, and Razi. According to this tradition, meaning is an inner state and a state of mind which is specified by the intent of the interlocutor or the author. The utterances have only an instrumentel role in speech. This approach can also be compared to the primary semantic view ranging from Aristotele to P. Grice---with some variations in the Western philosophical tradition. The second thesis is argued by the Mu'tazili sect who are called Islamic rationalists that objected to Ahl us-Sunnah in their prominent ideas. From Mu'tazila's point of view meaning should only be looked for among linguistic facts. There is no intentional content in the mind before the utterances. Meaning is produced within the structure of language itself and the conventional social context. In other words, meaning is nothing but the usage of the language, These two approaches also mean that there is going to arise different forms of interpretation in the theological perception. The aforementioned approach carries similarities with the approaches of Western thinkers like Wittgenstein and his followers. In this paper, the author deal with these two theological approaches by focusing on their linguistic and semantic views and comparing them with some modem western theories.展开更多

Methods The evaluation of neurological status, serial CT scans and pathological examination were applied on the canine model of IVH. The ventricular volume and blood clot volume were measured based on the CT images. Results The normal adult canine ventricle tend to be slitlike. After injection, the ventricle was obviously dilated by the blood clot. The linear regression of ventricular volume against blood clot volume was significant in the first week. From then on, however, while the clots continued to shrink, the ventricular volume showed progressive enlargement. The clots were lysed completely within 3 to 4 weeks. The linear regression of the degree of ventricular dilatation against the first clot volume was also significant. In the pathological examination, we found the ependymal lining of ventricular system was destroyed and neurons in the subependymal areas developed acidophil necrosis, which was prominent around Sylvian aqueduct. Conclusion Hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation(HVD) is a prominent feature of IVH and also is a strong indicator for poor prognosis. Ischemic changes of periventricular neurons in some important structures may be the most direct cause for poor outcome of IVH. It may be induced by periventricular vascular structures compressed by HVD, increased intracranial pressure, cerebral vasospasm and others.展开更多

Type the alleles of HLA-DQA1 by polymerase chain reaction with sequence-specific primers (PCR-SSP) technique in 38 patients of idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (7 women and 31 men), aged from 17 to 56 years old with diagnosis being according to World Health Organization criteria (IDC group), in 50 patients of end-stage heart failure of known etiology (18 women and 32 men), with ages ranging from 34 to 72(HF group), and in the control group consisting of presumably 100 healthy subjects (39 women and 61 men) from the health survey, aged from 30 to 59 years old. The frequency of HLA-DQA1*0501 in the DCM patients was significantly elevated than that in the HF and the control group. Molecular analysis of the DQA1 gene polymorphism performed in the three subgroups shows an increased frequency of DQA1*0501 among patients with less EF. The HF group carries a high frequency of HLA-DQA1*0301. An increased frequency of DQA1*0201 and DQA1*0103 was found in the control group. HLA-DQA1*0501 is an associated gene of idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy and the possession of DQA1*0301 may be indicative of the known etiologic heart failure, suggesting that the mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of IDC and otherwise heart failure are different. Immunologic abnormalities may be a major contributor to the susceptibility of developing of IDC.展开更多

One consequence of this view is to investigate industrial flows and consumer activities, and their effects on the environment in order to evaluate and eventually optimize these flows with the help of a systems methodology. Industrial ecology has been developed by engineers and natural scientists and its ethical core canon often manifests in anthropocentric assertions such as harmonizing the contradiction between nature and culture with scientific expertise, appropriate technology and socio-economic management. This paper argues however for a biocentric inspired, normative reading of some characteristics of industrial ecology's systems methodology. The presumption for the value of this endeavor is that industrial ecology's systems methodology has a potential for developing directions for the design of a possible sustainable world.展开更多
