In this review, multidrug resistance, the mechanism of disinfectant resistance, the methods for detecting disinfectant resistance and the cross-resistance between an- tibiotics and disinfectants are summarized. More efforts should be devoted to explor- ing the professional guidance of using antibiotics and disinfectants, and to develop- ing the comprehensive detection with genetic and molecular methods is highly ex- pected. 展开更多

Recently, the demand of services for architectural space is more increasing due to the diversification and complication of people's needs. In this research, it is assumed that the robot will support people's various needs and people's lives in the near future. In this study, the authors investigated the relationship between a robot and a person in quasi space close to actual life space. The authors carried out an experiment to clarify the feelings of worriment due to a robot in the living room in the case of Japanese males. This research aims to establish architecture techniques for robots and humans living together. In this experiment, the robot approached a male sitting on a sofa in quasi space. At different distances between the robot and the male, the subject evaluated his feelings of worriment from "no worriment" to "worriment" in five steps from one to five. The robot used in this experiment is middle-sized (380 mm (L) × 380 mm (W) × 350 mm (H)). In this experiment, it is considered that the robot asks for help outside when an emergency occurs. In this experiment, the authors had three situations for the subject: watching television, reading a magazine and just sitting. 展开更多

New approaches in angiogenic targeting for colorectal cancer 被引量:6

Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is one of the leading causes of cancer death worldwide. In the last decade, the addition of irinotecan and oxaliplatin to standard fluorouracil-based chemotherapy regimens have set the new benchmark of survival for patients with metastatic CRC at approximately 20 too. Despite these advances in the management of CRC, there is a strong medical need for more effective and well-tolerated therapies. The dependence of tumor growth and metastasis on blood vessels makes angiogenesis a rational target for therapy. One of the major pathways involved in this process is the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptors (VEGFR). In 2004, the first agent targeting angiogenesis, bevacizumab (BV), was approved as an adjunct to first-line cytotoxic treatment of metastatic CRC. The role of BV as part of adjuvant treatment and in combination with other targeted therapies is the subject of ongoing trials. However, BV is associated with an increase in the risk of arterial thromboembolic events, hypertension and gastrointestinal perforations and its use must be cautious. Novel VEGFR TK inhibitors with different ranges of nanomolar potencies, selectivities, and pharmacokinetic properties are entering phase 111 trials for the treatment of cancer. Conversely, one of these novel agents, vatalanib, has been shown not to confer survival benefit in first and second-line treatment of advanced CRC. The basis of these findings is being extensively evaluated. Ongoing and new well-designed trials will define the optimal clinical application of the actual antiangiogenic agents, and, on the other hand, intensive efforts in basic research will identify new agents with different antiangiogenic approaches for the treatment of CRC. In this review we discuss and highlight current and future approaches in angiogenic targeting for CRC. 展开更多

Association between gene polymorphisms of vitamin D receptor and pulmonary tuberculosis susceptibility:a meta-analysis 被引量:2

The vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene is a primary candidate gene for tuberculosis susceptibility, but results of previous studies are somewhat contradictory and underpowered. Thus, it is essential to further explore the association between VDR gene polymorphisms and risk of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis about the association between Fok[, TaqI, Apal and Bsm[ polymorphisms and PTB susceptibility was conducted. Statistical Package for Social Science (Version 13.0) and Review Manager (Version 4.2, The Cochrane Collaboration) were used to analyze the data reported in studies. Results: A total of 13 studies with 2 262 cases and 2 833 controls were involved in the FokI polymorphism, and the results showed FokI polymorphism was associated with PTB susceptibility (allele f vs F: OR=1.12, 95% CI=[1.02, 1.23]; the additive effect model ff vs FF: OR=1.40, 95%CI=[1.10, 1.77]; the recessive genetic model firs Ff+FF: OR=1.39, 95%CI=[1.12, 1.71]). No significant associations were observed between TaqI (15 studies with 3 031 cases and 3 132 controls), ApaI (7 studies with 1 495 cases and 1 922 controls), BsmI (6 studies with 919 cases and 1 250 controls) variants and PTB susceptibility. Conclusion: We found variant Fokl polymorphism of VDR gene may play a risky role in PTB development, and the genetic model was presumed to be recessive. 展开更多

Ibeku High School in Umuahia Municipality was chosen for this project based on the criteria set by the supervising bodies; the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), and the coordinating Research Institute; the National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI), Umudike. Adopting a participatory approach involving the research team, students and agricultural science teachers, some tuber and root crops-based technologies were demonstrated at the school farm. One hundred and nine respondents drawn for the study was to assess their interest and career in agriculture and occupational values. Students make important decisions that are strongly linked to their attitudes towards such activities. Poor student enrolment into agricultural professionals have been blamed on poor emolument of agricultural personnel and lack of motivational incentives in accordance with the nature of the profession among others, resulting to the profession's unattractiveness to young minds. In Nigeria, the attitude of youths towards agriculture as a profession has been responsible for the low level of agricultural production in the country. The main solution to the problem is getting young people involved in agriculture despite the fact that many people portray agriculture as a life of penury; thus the urgent need to change the negative view of agriculture and encourage them to embrace the vocation. The young people or youth have been identified as constituting the major resource base for any country which wants to embark on any meaningful agricultural and rural development projects. The focus of this study was to assess the influence of students' attitudes, enrolment and choice of agriculture as a profession in Ibeku High School in Umuahia Municipality. Fifty-nine percent of the respondents were males, while 41.0% were females and they were all single. About 9.1% of the respondents belonged to the Young Farmers' Club (YFC) at school, while a greater percentage of the students had interest in the pursuit of other careers than agriculture. The Government should enforce policies of establishing farms in schools, well equipped and with experienced teaching staff in agriculture to advance the profession to a higher level. 展开更多

The variation of membrane surface and lateral diffusion of membrane protein was studied after the interaction of laminin with its membrane receptor in mouse macrophages. A pattern of membrane surface which showed smaller and bigger peaks was obtained by scanning tunneling microscope(STM), looking like the domains of lipid groups and proteins in the model of fluid mosaic biomembrane. Some even more higher and wider peaks projected out from the membrane surface in STM image after the interacting of laminin with membrane receptor were, probably, the complexes of laminin and membrane receptor. Furthermore, the decreased lateral diffusion coefficient value (D) was obtained by fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) after the laminin was reacted with membrane receptor. This phenomenon provides an evidence that the complexes of laminin and its membrane receptor were located on the membrane of macrophages. So we could consider that the laminin is combined with membrane receptor leading to the variation in the properties of membrane surface. 展开更多

Many receptors,including thermal receptors and mechanical receptors,are only activated by stimuli within a clearly defined range of intensities.Differences in the receptive ranges enable individual receptors and their sensory centers to precisely detect the intensity of the stimulus and changes in intensity.Baroreceptors are the sensory terminals of the baroreflex.It is well understood that an increasing number of baroreceptors are recruited to produce afferent action potentials as the blood pressure increases,indicating that individual baroreceptors have different pressure thresholds.The present study revealed that individual baroreceptors could stop their afferent signals when the blood pressure exceeds a certain level,indicating that individual baroreceptors are sensitive to a specific range of blood pressure.The receptive ranges of individual baroreceptors differ in terms of the total range,the lower threshold,and the upper threshold.Of 85 baroreceptors examined in this study,the upper thresholds for about half were within the physiological blood pressure range.These results indicate that supraphysiological blood pressure is unlikely to be encoded by the recruitment of more baroreceptors.Instead,supraphysiological blood pressure levels might be signaled by an increase in the frequency of action potentials or by other mechanisms.In conclusion,our results indicate that rabbit baroreceptors are activated by blood pressure levels within specific receptive ranges.These findings should encourage further studies to examine the role of population coding of blood pressure by baroreceptors in the baroreflex. 展开更多

Challenges for rear hospital care of Wenchuan Earthquake casualties: experience from West China Hospital 被引量:8

To review the challenges and countermeasures in the hospital care for Wenchuan earthquake casualties and draw lessons for the protective response in the future. Medical records and laboratory findings of the victims admitted in West China Hospital (WCH) were retro- spectively analyzed. Related data were compared between beforemath and aftermath of the earthquake and between WCH and frontier county hospitals. One thousand and thirty-one earthquake survivors were hospitalized, 1 358 victims underwent surgery and 142 victims were transferred to intensive care unit. The incidence of infection, crush syndrome and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) was 39.6%, 20,7% and 2.3% respectively. Wound classification showed that the incidence of extremity damage was 72%, while the incidence of chest trauma, abdominal trauma and brain trauma was less than 10% respectively. Isolating rates of environmental pathogens were increased in the aftermath of earthquake, and the spectrum of the pathogens and related antibiotic sensitivities were quite different from those in the beforemath of earthquake. The social economic and population conditions in the earthquake-stricken areas affected the composition of the victims and the geographic features restricted the efficiency of rescue. Trauma-induced MODS, crush syndrome and severe infections all constituted the dilemma for the hospital care, to resolve whether the multidiscipline team work was proved to be an optimizing choice. For a more effective disaster protective response in the future, the study on rescue plan and the ladder therapies for massive casualties should be potentiated. 展开更多

Wet-resistant flexible electronics have acquired increasing attention on applications in wet environments,such as sweaty skin, rainy weather, biological fluids, and underwater. However, it remains challenging to achieve nonswelling and underwater self-healing hydrogel sensors for the mechanical perception in aqueous solutions. Herein, a selfhealing and non-swellable hydrogel is successfully fabricated,which presents an automatically healing behavior in various aquatic environments, including deionized water, seawater,sweat, alkali and acidic aqueous solutions. Moreover, the hydrogel demonstrates high stretchability and stable electromechanical sensing properties in water. Furthermore, an electronic skin is designed with the features of fast responsiveness, reliability, and high sensitivity for detecting breathing, speaking, coughing, and diverse body movements. The self-healing hydrogel sensors enable a brilliant mechanical sensibility for detecting a series of dynamic stimuli in air and underwater, even after the healing of fracture interface in water. The underwater self-healing and anti-swelling hydrogel would provide enticing potential on various stable electronic devices for aquatic environments, such as implantable electrodes, triboelectric nanogenerators, and underwater soft robotics. 展开更多
