Based on the global features, the local information of different kinds of features is utilized. Both the global and the local features are combined together. Moreover, the multiple kernel learning method is adopted. The global features and each kind of local feature are respectively associated with a kernel, and all these kernels are added together with different weights to obtain a mixed kernel for nonlinear mapping. In the reproducing kernel Hilbert space, different kinds of emotional features can be easily classified. In the experiments, the popular Berlin dataset is used, and the optimal parameters of the global and the local kernels are determined by cross-validation. After computing using multiple kernel learning, the weights of all the kernels are obtained, which shows that the formant and intensity features play a key role in speech emotion recognition. The classification results show that the recognition rate is 78. 74% by using the global kernel, and it is 81.10% by using the proposed method, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method.展开更多

BEL mimics the emotional learning mechanism in brain which has the superior features of fast learning and quick reacting. To further improve the performance of BEL in data analysis, genetic algorithm (GA) is adopted for optimally tuning the weights and biases of amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex in BEL neural network. The integrated algorithm named GA-BEL combines the advantages of the fast learning of BEL, and the global optimum solution of GA. GA-BEL has been tested on a real-world chaotic time series of geomagnetic activity index for prediction, eight benchmark datasets of university California at Irvine (UCI) and a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) dataset for classifications. The comparisons of experimental results have shown that the proposed GA-BEL algorithm is more accurate than the original BEL in prediction, and more effective when dealing with large-scale classification problems. Further, it outperforms most other traditional algorithms in terms of accuracy and execution speed in both prediction and classification applications.展开更多

This paper first discussed issues and uses of literature in L2 contexts and addressed the current empirical inquiry into L2 haiku writing as a method for L2 learning. The study was designed as a qualitative research which investigated the participants' reflection on writing L2 haikus for six weeks in an EFL college writing course. The data obtained was analyzed by using the coding system and showed that writing haiku in the target language was a challenging but valuable task for L2 learning among the EFL students. Especially haiku composition allowed them to develop their L2 linguistic awareness展开更多

The research commenced in 2012 and is now in its third "year. The project is based on an intervention at a high school in an impoverished suburb of Athens and researches educational practices through interpretative-ethnographic methods. The researcher has attempted to answer the question of whether the design of the learning environments is effective not only in the learning process, but also on inter-communication and "connectedness" between the members of the learning community. The findings so far indicate a correlation between adolescents' emotional and social wellbeing and the school's approach to knowledge and learning methods, specifically in Religious Education classes. It is fair to say, however, that there exist ethnic, social and family components that are negatively related to a sense of"connectedness" within the school although at the same time Religious Education as a subject is, however, found to be positively related to learning community atmosphere.展开更多

This model studied the travel time, cost, and means of transportation of care providers. The pre-survey results regarding elderly tele-nursing show that a son/daughter can visit a parent more than once a week. In the results, the time required for elderly tele-nursing was influenced by whether or not the visitor uses the shinkansen (bullet train of Japan). In the main survey, based on 40 questionnaires, clear differences were observed according to whether visits were “every two weeks” or “once per month”. Furthermore, this result was also indicated by t-tests.展开更多

In the preschool period, the child experiences a rapid development, especially in the emotional sphere. That is why one of the prior characteristics of the development is emotionality. Preschool children's feelings are so strong that they include the children's appearance. Children experience the objective truth very subjectively. All the knowledge and the behavior of the child depend on emotions, which we must take great care of in the kindergarten. We can use the child's emotions to stimulate in a positive way the motivation to learn. In cases where there is the emotionally convenient atmosphere for growth and development, the child has strong security and faith feelings to build relationships with the others. Starting the kindergarten is a challenge both for the mother and the child. The mother should be the child's biggest reliance to get used to the new environment. Socialization and the emotional development of the child cannot be separated. Winning and development of skills is in both individual and social nature. This paper is to examine the use of English emotion words on the target group of English learners in China. The study is designed to find out the relationship between the use of emotion words and such relevant variables as language proficiency, gender, and age. The results demonstrate that the use of emotion words is significantly linked to the level of proficiency as well as gender. Age is found to have slight effect on the use of emotion words. The study also reveals that more positive emotion words are produced than negative ones in the speech. Based on the major findings, some implications and suggestions are offered: Firstly, English learners in China are expected to improve their language proficiency, particularly that of listening and speaking. Secondly, they are supposed to enhance their culture awareness of English by means of exposing themselves to as much authentic language as possible.展开更多

However, the annotation in the dimensional affect space usually takes the form of a continuous real value which has an ordinal property. The aforementioned methods do not focus on taking advantage of this important information. Therefore, we propose an affective rating ranking framework for affect recognition based on face images in the valence and arousal dimensional space. Our approach can appropriately use the ordinal information among affective ratings which are generated by discretizing continuous annotations.Specifically, we first train a series of basic cost-sensitive binary classifiers, each of which uses all samples relabeled according to the comparison results between corresponding ratings and a given rank of a binary classifier. We obtain the final affective ratings by aggregating the outputs of binary classifiers. By comparing the experimental results with the baseline and deep learning based classification and regression methods on the benchmarking database of the AVEC 2015 Challenge and the selected subset of SEMAINE database, we find that our ordinal ranking method is effective in both arousal and valence dimensions.展开更多
