AIM:To investigate whether the incidence of hiccups in patients undergoing esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) or same-day bidirectional endoscopy (EGD and colonoscopy;BDE) with sedation is different from those without s...AIM:To investigate whether the incidence of hiccups in patients undergoing esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) or same-day bidirectional endoscopy (EGD and colonoscopy;BDE) with sedation is different from those without sedation in terms of quantity,duration and typical onset time.METHODS:Consecutive patients scheduled for elective EGD or same-day BDE at the gastrointestinal endoscopy unit or the health examination center were allocated to two groups:EGD without sedation (Group A) and BDE with sedation (Group B).The use of sedation was based on the patients' request.Anesthesiologists participated in this study by administrating sedative drugs as usual.A single experienced gastroenterologist performed both the EGD and the colonoscopic examinations for all the patients.The incidence,duration and onset time of hiccups were measured in both groups.In addition,the association between clinical variables and hiccups were analyzed.RESULTS:A total of 435 patients were enrolled in the study.The incidences of hiccups in the patients with and without sedation were significantly different (20.5% and 5.1%,respectively).The use of sedation for patients undergoing endoscopy was still significantly associated with an increased risk of hiccups (adjusted odds ratio:8.79,P < 0.001) after adjustment.The incidence of hiccups in males under sedation was high (67.4%).The sedated patients who received 2 mg midazolam developed hiccups more frequently compared to those receiving 1 mg midazolam (P = 0.0028).The patients with the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) were prone to develop hiccups (P = 0.018).CONCLUSION:Male patients undergoing EGD or BDE with sedation are significantly more likely to suffer from hiccups compared to those without sedation.Midazolam was significantly associated with an increased risk of hiccups.Furthermore,patients with GERD are prone to develop hiccups.展开更多

It is the view of the authors that accumulation of heat and dampness in the heart and stomach and deficiency of both spleen and kidney with blood stasis would be the main predisposing factors in pathogenesis of incipient diabetic nephropathy. A controlled clinical study of 32 patients treatment with modified recipe of Wang Kentang’s Bai Fu Ling Wan, a proved formula of clearing away the stomach-heat, purging the heart fire, strengthening the stomach and tonifying the kidney, and simultaneously resolving blood stasis and turbid qi was performed. The total effective rate was 93.8%, superior to that in the control group treated with Capoton (59.9%). A marked improvement in symptoms, control of blood glucose level and reduction of urinary protein obtained in the treatment group suggests that this treatment is effective in retarding the development of the disease.展开更多

The results showed that the total effective rate for audition elevation in the treatment group was 52.0%, and that in the control group, 26.1%. In the treatment group, the rheological indexes were improved after treatment, the difference being very significant in comparison with those before treatment (P<0.05 and P<0.01); while in the control group, except the whole blood low shearing specific viscosity, all the other 4 indexes were not statistically significant before and after treatment (P>0.05).展开更多
Three-dimensional(3 D)printing has had a large impact on various fields,with fused deposition modeling(FDM)being the most versatile and cost-effective 3 D printing technology.However,FDM often requires sacrificial sup...Three-dimensional(3 D)printing has had a large impact on various fields,with fused deposition modeling(FDM)being the most versatile and cost-effective 3 D printing technology.However,FDM often requires sacrificial support structures,which significantly complicates the processing and increases the cost.Furthermore,poor layer-to-layer adhesion greatly affects the mechanical stability of 3D-printed objects.Here,we present a new Print-Healing strategy to address the aforementioned challenges.A polymer ink(Cu-DOU-CPU)with synergetic triple dynamic bonds was developed to have excellent printability and room-temperature self-healing ability.Objects with various shapes were printed using a simple compact 3D printer,and readily assembled into large sophisticated architectures via self-healing.Triple dynamic bonds induce strong binding between layers.Additionally,damaged printed objects can spontaneously heal,which significantly elongates their service life.This work paves a simple and powerful way to solve the key bottlenecks in FDM 3D printing,and will have diverse applications.展开更多

The property of corrosion resistance dual-implanted (C+Ti) H13 steel is studied using multi-sweep cyclic voltammetry. TEM images of the cross section of an implanted sample reveal plenty of circular nanometer structures with diameters of 10–30 nm. The phases are densely embedded in the implanted layer. The embedded structure improves the surface corrosion resistance, as can be observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The phases with the shape of a tiny wire in nanometer size are formed. The nanometer phases, consisting of TiC, FeTi and FeTi2, are formed in dual implanted layer. The corrosion current peak density decreases to 1/16–1/10 that of the unimplanted H13 steel. The formation conditions of the nanometer phases and their effects are investigated. The passivation layer consists of nanometer phases.
