Multiple sources of data were collected from 90 students of grade 10 at a high school in Beijing, including the pretest and posttest writings, writing self-efficacy questionnaires, interviews, and follow-up questionnaires over one semester. Data analyses showed that the experimental group excelled the control group in writing performance and became more confident in writing at the end of positive self-evaluation practices. This study also found that writing self-efficacy and writing performance were positively related. The students with high writing self-efficacy tended to perform better in their writing than those with low writing self-efficacy.展开更多

A total of 1,036 Chinese eighth graders answered an English proficiency test and questionnaires assessing motivational beliefs. Structural equation modelling results with bootstrapping procedures revealed that intrinsic value can directly and indirectly influence foreign language proficiency via partial mediation effect of self-efficacy while extrinsic value can only directly influence foreign language proficiency with a small magnitude. Moreover, there is no gender difference in the mediation model. Our findings suggested that intrinsic value can help students improve foreign language proficiency by improving their self-efficacy beliefs. The findings contribute to the documents of self-determination theory and hold substantive theoretical and practical implications for foreign language teachers.展开更多

It was designed using a mixed methods approach, with a primary questionnaire instrument being supported by secondary interview data. The quantitative data was submitted to Amos version 18.0 to evaluate proposed models. It was found that L2 learning experience was the most important predictive dimension of intended learning effort for both samples. However, the roles of the other two components, the ideal L2 self and the ought-to L2 self, appeared to be unstable, which concludes that D6rnyei's tripartite model obtained partial support in both EFL and ESL contexts. The analysis of qualitative data offers strong evidence for the claim that the future self-guides do not necessarily result in intended effort unless some essential conditions are met.展开更多

This study also found that writing self-efficacy and writing performance were positively related. The students with high writing self-efficacy tended to perform better in their writing than those with low writing self-efficacy.
文摘This case study on three Chinese EFL learners in junior high school examined the interaction inside and outside learners' EFL self-concept system, and the findings revealed: (1) inside the self-concept system, the interaction between the global and specific self-concepts is of much complexity; (2) the gap between the global and specific self-concepts would cause imbalance in the self-concept system, and thus trigger efforts to improve learning, while some reconciling elements in the global self-concept may sustain balance in the self-concept system, inhibiting learners' motivation to improve; and (3) the degree of specificity of learners' specific self- concepts that inform learners' learning efforts contributes considerably to the outcome of these efforts, as does that of learners' beliefs about EFL learning which mediate the learning efforts.

文摘The present study examined how students' intrinsic and extrinsic value promotes their foreign language proficiency via the mediation effect of self-efficacy beliefs. The findings contribute to the documents of self-determination theory and hold substantive theoretical and practical implications for foreign language teachers.
文摘This present study attempts to conduct a comparison of the tripartite model of L2 Motivational Self System in two different learning contexts, Chinese EFL and ESL learning settings. The analysis of qualitative data offers strong evidence for the claim that the future self-guides do not necessarily result in intended effort unless some essential conditions are met.
