The waterfront street has the following characters: ambiguous spatial structure, a lack of spatial design; a lack of business diversity, and over-scaled street space. The scale of waterfront space is amenity, diversified and hydrophilic property. We analyzed and performed a parallel comparison on waterfront street space to help improve Honggutan waterfront street by analyzing its design principles, and taking references from outstanding cases at home and abroad.展开更多

The Tsunami Warning Center in Mexico recently created (September 19, 2011) monitors earthquakes and sea level change caused by these same. Sea level on the west coast of the Mexican Pacific was analyzed after the occurrence of local, regional and distant earthquakes, in order to determine the existence of an anomaly due to the quake itself. Variations in sea level due to local registered earthquakes Mw 6.0 to 7.4 range was from 0.10 to 0.30 m; for regional earthquakes of Mw 7.3 and 8.2 were 0.12 and 0.22 m respectively and to the distant earthquake of Mw 8.0 recorded in Solomon Islands, the change in sea level of the maximum recorded was 0.20 m in Manzanillo, Colima. It is important to know that earthquakes whether local, regional or distant whose magnitudes are in the range specified here, did not present a risk to the Mexican coast, but do not rely, having to monitor variations in sea level that earthquakes can produce and be aware that you may perhaps occur as a tsunami in Indonesia in 2004 or Japan in 2011.展开更多

There are two methods of downscaling: offline coupling and online coupling. The two kinds of coupling methods are described in detail by coupling the Weather Research and Forecasting model( WRF) with the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences Atmospheric General Circulation Model Version 4. 0( IAP AGCM4. 0) in the study. And the extreme precipitation event over Beijing on July 212012 is simulated by using the two coupling methods. Results show that online coupling method is of great value in improving the model simulation. Furthermore, the data exchange frequency of online coupling has some effect on simulation result.展开更多

This qualitative study aimed at establishing reasons as to why there was still improper solid waste management in Mbarara municipality and also establishing its constraints. Tools used included semi-structured questionnaires, observation and photographs. Two hundred and ninety-four participants (24 solid waste collectors, eight municipal council members and 262 community members) participated in the study. The study revealed both insufficient budget (87.5%) and insufficient equipment (50%) as the most common policy challenges in implementing proper solid waste management. Solid waste collectors not being comfortable with their salaries (79.2%), limited sensitization regarding solid waste management (66%) and limited necessary tools (58.3%) as other challenges faced by solid waste management policy makers and implementers and finally, community members having limited awareness about laws governing solid waste management (61.1%). In conclusion, insufficient budget, insufficient equipment, poor motivation and inadequate sensitization were found to be the major reasons as to why there was still improper solid waste management in Mbarara municipality, western Uganda.展开更多

In Mexico, there are more and more women running various organizations, including those belonging to the field of education, and universities are no exception. On the other hand, the type of leadership being exercised can promote or hinder the proper performance of the institute and may be a factor of distinction and influence the behavior of those who integrate it; therefore, knowing how it works provides feedback about the processes that determine organizational behavior and the working environment.展开更多

The paper summarizes the researches outputs whose main aim was to illustrate the potentialities of different strategies for the improvement of suburbs. In order to implement different strategies for the refurbishment of suburban areas, researches were aimed firstly at the identification of several case studies that are representatives of the European panorama because of their typology, construction and state of physical and social deterioration. The final result was a collection of examples for the urban regeneration, gathered from case studies but offering a wide-scale of applications on public housing complexes. The paper highlights different approaches and strategies taken by different countries towards the methodologies of assessing, refurbishing and adding new value to the suburban areas, in view of increasing not only the quality of buildings but also the quality of public spaces and services, for a better quality of life of the citizens.展开更多

A pilot plant for cellulosic ethanol production with a capacity of one ton in dry biomass per day was established in 2007 and launched test-run operations for mass production in early 2010. The feedstock is focused on rice straw currently, but is also flexible for sugarcane bagasse and hardwood. The operative experiences and the experimental data will provide valuable information for the evaluation of production cost as well as the foundation for design of a commercial production plant in Taiwan. Additionally, this pilot plant will also serve as an important platform for validation of technologies related to cellulosic ethanol production and biorefinery operations. The biomass-to-ethanol process of this plant is based on the route of biochemical conversions. Developed and developing technologies, such as acid hydrolysis pretreatment, high solid to liquid ratio hydrolysis, in-house cellulase production, xylose fermentation, and the distillation and dehydration processes will be introduced.展开更多

Auditing literature, regional, and network studies are used to set up hypotheses on differences between rural regions and the metropolitan urban region. Survey data from 421 SMEs are analyzed and findings support that in rural regions, especially those with a strong entrepreneurial culture and tight inter-organizational links, the SME-auditor relationship is to a larger extent trust-based compared to the urban region. In the rural region, the auditor assumes the role as a business support agent providing valuable strategic advice. The SME-auditor relationship is weakest in the urban region where the auditor's role is limited.展开更多

The report was named in honor of Ernest Boyer, an educational theorist who also participated in writing the text. Less comprehensive than the canonical texts by Marcus Vitruvius Pollio and his interlocutors, it is nonetheless a mirror of our current assumptions about the education of the architect. This paper looks at the epistemology inherited from Vitruvius as it shapes pedagogy up and through the Boyer Report and into the 21 st century. Using a method of comparative analysis applied to past and current architecture programs, our argument is that historical divisions between professional or applied knowledge and liberal or theoretical knowledge inherited from the past limit our capacity within architecture education to integrate new strategies for knowledge creation and dissemination. It is concluded that any serious revision of architecture education means a systematic reconsideration of the basis of architecture knowledge. What of the (persistent) Vitruvian model is relevant in our post-modern condition? What do we learn from the image of our profession projected through the lens of the Boyer Report and it is like? In other words, what would Vitruvius do?展开更多

The article first describes the setting and distribution of a national harvest quota and analyzes its equity impacts on farmer households. Based on access mapping of the commercial timber commodity chain, profit distribution and mechanisms for controlling and maintaining access to profit are analyzed for different actors along the chain. The data show that farmers do not benefit to a great extent from the commerce, even if they are endowed with rights to manage and harvest forests and freely sell commercial timber in the region. There are a number of institutional and non-institutional factors that determine the extent of benefits farmers and other actors along the timber commodity chain can seek. Under current arrangements, the devolution of forest property in the SCFR does not ensure that farmer households benefit from commercial timber marketing. In order to stimulate farmers’ enthusiasm for forest rehabilitation and management, beyond the devolution of forest property, it is firstly necessary to take effective measures to improve farmer access to commercial timber profits.展开更多
