Surveys on antibiotics have become one of the most popular topics in the recent two decades. From 1998 to 2018, more than 5,000 articles concentrated on the research of antibiotic wastewater treatment have been publis...Surveys on antibiotics have become one of the most popular topics in the recent two decades. From 1998 to 2018, more than 5,000 articles concentrated on the research of antibiotic wastewater treatment have been published. Among them, photocatalysis has received much attention due to its green and environmental-friendly properties. In this mini-review, the recent progress of photocatalysis in antibiotic wastewater was summarized, including antibiotics degradation and hydrogen energy conversion. The photocatalysts commonly used were also discussed. It can be mainly classified as TiO2-based materials, sulfides and polymeric carbon nitride-based materials and bismuth-contained materials. Four major types of antibiotics, tetracycline, sulfonamide, β-lactam and quinolone, were involved. Furthermore, perspectives concentrated on future development and challenges, especially converting antibiotics into hydrogen energy, were also proposed.展开更多
The hygiene hypothesis is thought to be a significant contributor to the growing incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) around the world, although the evidence for specific factors that underlie the hygiene hyp...The hygiene hypothesis is thought to be a significant contributor to the growing incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) around the world, although the evidence for specific factors that underlie the hygiene hypothesis in IBD is unclear. We aimed to systematically review the literature to determine which hygiene-related factors are associated with the development of IBD. Publications identified from a broad based MEDLINE and Current Contents search between 1966 and 2007 on key terms relevant to the 'hygiene hypothesis' and IBD including H pylori exposure, helminths, cold chain hypothesis, measles infection and vaccination, antibiotic use, breastfeeding, family size, sibship, urban upbringing, day care attendance and domestic hygiene were reviewed. The literature suggests that the hygiene hypothesis and its association with decreased microbial exposure in childhood probably plays an important role in the development of IBD, although the strength of the supporting data for each of the factors varies considerably. The most promising factors that may potentially be associated with development of IBD include H pylori exposure, helminths, breastfeeding and sibship. However, the vast majority of studies in this area are plagued by serious methodological shortcomings, particularly the reliance on retrospective recall of information making it difficult to truly ascertain the importance of a 'hygiene hypothesis' in IBD. The 'hygiene hypothesis' in IBD is an important area of research that may give clues to the aetiology of this disease. Directions for future research are recommended.展开更多

These processes can be used alone or in co...In this research, it used advanced oxidation processes for the recovery, detoxification and mineralization of wastewater mainly contaminated by antibiotics (ciprofloxacin). These processes can be used alone or in combination with each other or by complementing traditional methods, even allowing the disinfection of bacterial and viral inactivation. With the use of experimental systems UV/H202/O3, UV/H202, it can achieve total mineralization of the compound. Ciprofloxacin solutions used at 50, 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 ppm, degraded to 100% of antibiotics and by a microbiological method show that the loss of biological activity is inversely proportional to the time of irradiation.展开更多
AIM: To report our experience with empiric antimicrobial monotherapy (piperacillin/tazobactam, of which no data are available in such specific circumstances) in microbiologically-documented infections in patients with...AIM: To report our experience with empiric antimicrobial monotherapy (piperacillin/tazobactam, of which no data are available in such specific circumstances) in microbiologically-documented infections in patients with benign and malignant conditions of the biliary tract.METHODS: Twenty-three patients, 10 with benign and 13 with malignant conditions affecting the biliary tree and microbiologically-documented infections were recruited and the efficacy of empirical antibiotic therapy was assessed.RESULTS: The two groups featured similar demographic and clinical data. Overall, the infective episodes were most due to Gram negative agents, more than 60% of such episodes (mostly in malignant conditions) were preceded by invasive instrumental maneuvers. Empirical antibiotic therapy with a single agent (piperacillin/tazobactam) was effective in more than 80% of cases. No deaths were reported following infections. CONCLUSION: An empiric therapeutic approach with piperacillin/tazobactam is highly effective in biliary tract infections due to benign or malignant conditions.展开更多

Sacubitill valsartan (previously known as LCZ696) is a new oral agent approved for the treatment of symptomatic chronic heart failure in adults with reduced ejection fraction. It is described as the fast in class angiotensin receptor neprilysin inhibitor (ARNI) since it incorporates the neprilysin inhibitor, sacubitril and the angiotensin Ⅱ receptor antagonist, valsartan. Neprilysin is an endopeptidase that breaks down several vasoactive peptides including natriuretic peptides (NPs), bradykinin, endothelin and angiotensin II (Ang-II). Therefore, a natural consequence of its inhibition is an increase of plasmatic levels of both, NPs and Ang-Ⅱ (with opposite biological actions). So, a combined inhibition of these both systems (Sacubitril / valsartan) may enhance the benefits of NPs effects in HF (natriuresis, diuresis, etc) while Ang-Ⅱ receptor is inhibited (reducing vasoconstriction and aldosterone release). In a large clinical trial (PARADIGM-HF with 8442 patients), this new agent was found to significantly reduce cardiovascular and all cause mortality as well as hospitalizations due to HF (compared to enalapril). This manuscript reviews clinical evidence for sacubitril valsartan, dosing and cautions, future directions and its considered place in the therapy of HF with reduced ejection fraction.展开更多

In this study, we set out to present the characteristics and classification of antibiotics recommended for children according to WHO, EMA and EBM. Also, the aim of this study was to analyze the most prescribed pediatric antibiotics in 2013 in Republic of Macedonia compared with standard treatments. Presented data was collected according to the number of prescribed recipes of pediatric dosage forms covered by the Fund of Republic of Macedonia. The obtained results showed that the most prescribed pediatric antibiotic is amoxicillin with clavulanic acid (875mg + 125mg) in form of tablet, with 280 863 prescribed recipes which corresponds to the recommendations of EBM.展开更多

Four pharmaceutical interventions were set up i...Evidence based pharmaceutical interventions focusing on the characteristics of antibiotics use in primary hospitals were investigated to optimize the use of antibiotics. Four pharmaceutical interventions were set up in this study: 1) different levels of antibiotic management system were developed; 2) usage of antibiotics was reported in a monthly journal for the entire hospital; 3) early antibiotics warning system was started; 4) communication between pharmacists and physicians was strengthened. Use of antibiotics in 2007 (before intervention) and 2008 (after intervention) in department of respiratory medicine was analyzed. Significant differences (P〈0.01) in antibiotics use before and after intervention were observed. Use of antibiotics was changed from focusing on one category of drugs to a rotation of a wide range of agents. Evidence based, sound pharmaceutical interventions were effective means to ensure the rational use of antibiotics.展开更多

Considerable efforts have persistently performed since the first tetronate was isolated, to elucidate the biosyn- thesis of natural tetronate products, by isotope-labeled feeding experiments, genetical characterization of biosynthetic gene clusters, and biochemical reconstitution of key enzymatic catalyzed reactions. Accordingly, the biosynthesis of spirotetronates has been gradually determined, including biosynthesis of a polyketide-derived backbone for spirotetronate aglycone, incorpo- ration of a glycerol-derived three-carbon unit into tetronic acid moiety, formation of mature aglycone via Diels-AIder-like re- action, and decorations of aglycone with various deoxysugar moieties. In this paper, the biosynthetic investigations of natural tetronates are well documented and a common biosynthetic route for this group of natural products is summarized accordingly.展开更多

However, in China, the training pathways and practical work of clinical pharmacy are still in the exploratory stage. In the present review, we aimed to discuss the impact of pharmacist-led interventions in reducing inappropriate drug use in orthopaedics. Results showed clinical pharmacists can assist orthopaedists and nurses in the rational use of medication in all aspects of antibiotic therapy, pain control and anticoagulation therapy. The clinical interventions by pharmacists have greatly reduced medication errors and medical costs. However, there is still a long time to develop pharmacy service, improve the professional quality of pharmacists and enact the Chinese Pharmacist Law.展开更多

This study is aimed to analyze the relationship between β-lactam allergy and 10 single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs) in interleukin-10(IL-10), IL-13, IL-4Rα, high-affinity immunoglobulin E-receptor β chain(FcεRIβ), interferon γ receptor 2(IFNGR2), and CYP3A4, and within the Han Chinese population of Northwest China. Genotyping for the SNPs was conducted using the Sequenom Mass ARRAY platform. SPSS 17.0 was employed to analyze the statistical data and SHEsis was used to perform the haplotype reconstruction and analyze linkage disequilibrium of SNPs of IL-10 and IL-13. The results showed that the genotype distribution of CYP3A4 rs2242480/CT differed significantly between case and control groups of males(P=0.022; odds ratio(OR)=0.167, 95% confidence interval(CI): 0.032–0.867). Further analysis showed that CCA, CCG, and TAA haplotypes of IL-10 had no significant correlation in patients with β-lactam allergy. The correlation between CCT and CAC haplotypes of IL-13 and β-lactam allergy needs to be further studied. The analysis did not reveal any differences in the distribution of others gene polymorphisms between cases and controls.展开更多
