Preliminary screening of antimicrobial and antitumor activities from cultivated microalgaes

Hydrophilic and lipophilic extracts were prepared from 8 microalgal strains, and screened for antimicrobial and antitumor activities. Antimicrobial activity was determined by observing bacterial ( S. aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coh~ and fungal(Aspergillus niger and Penicillium chrysogenum) growth inhibition. All the microalgae had different degrees of antimicrobial activity against one or more microbe - tested, and 56.47% of the extracts showing the anti-S.aureus activity exhibited the antibacterial activity against (MRSA). Cytotoxic activities were measured in vitro against human cancer cell lines HeLa by the MTT assay. Most of these extracts showed potent activity against the growth of the tumor cells, especially the intracellular lipophilic extracts from Isochrysis galbana Parke 3011 and Isochrysis galbana Parke H29, which exhibited strong antitumor activity against HeLa cell lines. The overall results of this study indicate that the extracts from microalgae represent a potential sources of medicine for the treatment of infectious and cancer diseases. 展开更多

SalNa (sodium salinomycin) reacts with divalent transition metal ions of Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) to produce novel compounds characterized by various spectroscopic methods. The interaction of metal (II) ions with SalNa results in the formation of mononuclear complexes of a general composition of [M(Sal)2·(H2O)2] nH2O (n = 0 or 2) where the divalent cations replace Na~ ions from the cavity of initial compound. The new compounds (disalinomycinates) possess an enhanced antibacterial activity against Gram-positive microorganisms as compared to both SalNa and SalH (salinomycinic acid), respectively. The metal (II) complexes manifest strong concentration dependent cytotoxic effect in experiments using human leukemia cell lines. The complexes of Co0I) and Cu(lI) proved to exert superior activity as compared to the Ni(II) and Zn(II) analogues and are much more cytotoxic than SalNa and SalH. Further studies should be conducted to determine the therapeutic indexes of the new compounds. 展开更多

A novel homoisoflavone typicalvone A (1), together with two known compounds, n-heneicosane and p-hydroxy benzoic acid, were isolated from Aspidistra typica Baill. The structure of the new compound was elucidated by sepctral techniques, viz. 1D, 2D NMR spectra and HR-ESI-MS. Compared with berberine hydrochloride, typicalvone A showed moderate anti-bacterial activities, especially against the Gram-negative Paeudomonas aeruginosa ATCC-9027 and Escherichia coli ATCC-25922, with MBC values of 1000 and 500 μg/mL, respectively. In addition, it exhibited weak inhibitory activities against the tumour cells. 展开更多
