An interesting negative refraction phenomenon has been observed in a bidomain system where one medium supports forwardly propagating waves (normal waves, NWs) and the other AWs. In this paper we find that negative refraction (NR) in nonlinear media has an asymmetric property, i.e., NR can be observed only by applying wave source with proper frequency to one medium, but not the other. Moreover, NR appears always when the incident waves are dense and the refractional waves are sparse. This asymmetry is a particular feature for nonlinear NR, which can neither be observed in linear refraction processes (both positive and negative refractions) nor in nonlinear positive refraction. The mechanism underlying the asymmetry of nonlinear NR are fully understood based on the competition of nonlinear waves.展开更多

It was found that the third harmonic susceptibility of polyaniline strongly depends on the delocalization of the electrons. The refractive indices n ( λ =589 nm) of PANI-HCl and PANI-H 3PO 4 are calculated by use of three common methods (the Lorentz-Lorentz theoretical model, the Gladstone-Dale group contribution and the Vogel group correlation) based on group contributions to molar refraction. The calculated n values are varied from 1.31 to 1.42 for PANI-HCl and 1.36 to 1.45 for PANI-H 3PO 4.展开更多

The expressions of the optical forces concerned with the Kerr effect, which affects the refractive index of the medium, are presented. The distribution of the optical forces in the trapping region is simulated and discussed. The results show that the stability of the tweezers depends on the nonlinear coefficient of refractive index, and the optical tweezers could be broken down with a critical value of the nonlinear coefficient of refractive index of the surrounding medium, or with a critical value of the laser intensity, duration of laser pulse, and radius of beam waist. Moreover, these results give us the explanation the stability of the optical tweezers used for the trapped object as biological molecule embedded in the fluid, which is sensitive with Kerr effect.展开更多

It is investigated that the correlations between the ratio of EGRET to Fermi blazars g-ray flux densities and the spectral index differ for EGRET to Fermi blazars for three subclasses of high-frequency peaked BL Lacertae objects-HBL, low-frequency peaked BL Lacertae objects-LBL, and flat spectrum radio quasars-FSRQs. There is a consistent relationship between the ratio of the two γ-ray flux densities and the spectral index difference for the three subclasses. It suggests that the spectrum changed with the source brightness in the gamma-ray band. Both the spectral index difference and the correlation slopes follow a continuous sequence from FSRQs to LBLs to HBLs, which is consistent with the noted blazar sequence.展开更多

We demonstrate the integrability of the nonlocal LPD equation, provide its Lax pair, and present its rational soliton solutions and self-potential function by using the degenerate Darboux transformation. From the numerical plots of solutions, the compression effects of the real refractive index profile and the gain-or-loss distribution produced by δ are discussed.展开更多

Although these vortices are approximate, they can reflect the real properties of self-similar optical beam during a short-term propagation. Existence of these autonomous vortices require delicate balances between the system parameters such as diffraction, nonlinearity, gain, and external potential. We are concerned with some special but interesting situations, and discussing the changes of the height, width, energy, and central position of the vortices as the increase of propagation distance. Moreover, we are also interested in the azimuthal modulational instability of the system, and comparing our prediction for the modulational instability growth rates to numerical results.展开更多

And the variations of the dimensionless gain spectra with the normalized angular frequency and normalized incident power are calculated and discussed for different sign relations between the linear dispersion and the third-order nonlinear coefficients. The results show that in the negative refractive index region, MI can occur irrespective of the sign relation between the linear dispersion and the third-order nonlinear coefficients. And depending on different dimensionless angular frequencies and different sign relations, the variations of the dimensionless gain spectra with incident power take on several different forms. Namely, the peak gain and the cut-off frequency of MI may increase then decrease with the increase of the incident power, or decrease monotonously. Moreover, MI may even have a threshold incident power for some cases.展开更多
