Contrasting two spring SST predictors for the number of western North Pacific tropical cyclones

Recent studies have revealed that two boreal spring sea surface temperature （SST） indices have potential to predict the number of western North Pacific （WNP） tropical cyclones （TCs） in the following peak typhoon season （June-October）： the northern tropical Atlantic （NTA） SST, and the SST gradient （SSTG） between the southwestern Pacific and western Pacic warm pool. The interannua[ and interdecadal variations of NTA SST and SSTG and their relationships to the number ofWNP TCs during 1950-2013 were compared. On the interdecadal timescale, SSTG showed better correlation with the number of WNP TCs than NTA SST. The interdecadal variation of NTA SST was closely associated with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, while that of SSTG was anti-correlated with the Central Pacific （CP） El Nino index at the interdecadal timescale. On the interannual timescale, both NTA SST and SSTG were modulated by two types of El Nino. The NTA SST revealed significant correlations with the number of WNPTCs beginning from the early 1960s; by contrast, SSTG showed significant correlations after the mid-1970s. Co-variability of NTA SST and SSTG existed after the late 1980s, induced by modulation from CP El Nino.The co-variability of these two spring SST predictors increased their prediction skill after the late 1980s, with enhanced correlation between the number of WNPTCs and the two predictors.

Forecasting of Thunder/Lightning Potential

In this paper, the characteristics of thunderstorms in Zibo City were ana- lyzed. The thunderstorms could be divided into cold-front thunderstorm, upper trough （shear line） type thunderstorm and cold-vortex thunderstorm. We also screened out the atmosphere parameters that were highly correlated to the occurrence of thunder/ lightning. They were treated as the predictors. Each possible influencing factor was analyzed on the lightning day correspondingly. Their threshold values were also de- termined. Among them, the parameter that had the highest neutralizing capacity was treated as negative index. For different type of thunderstorm weather, the negative index was different. The application of negative indexes was also discussed. We hope to provide a valuable basis for the accurate forecasting of thunder/lightning.

Proximity and Framing in News Media： Effects on Credibility, Bias, Recall, and Reader Intentions

A writer＇s decision to localize a news article and the valence of the frame the writer employs can affect readers＇ perceptions of credibility and bias as well as readers＇ factual recall and the likelihood that readers would want to read the newspaper further. A 2 （proximity： local, non-local） ~ 3 （frame valence： positive, neutral, negative） factorial experiment （N = 136） tested the effects of proximity and frame valence on credibility, perceived bias, recall, and reading intentions. Articles that localized enjoyed greater perceptions of credibility but not recall, while articles with either a positive or negative frame yielded greater recall than articles with a neutral frame. Neither factor exhibited a main effect in predicting perceived bias, but their interaction was a significant predictor. In addition, localization and frame valence also influence the likelihood that participants would want to read the source newspaper again. Implications for theory and media practice are discussed.

PULMONARY EMBOLISM DURING PREGNANCY AND THE POSTPARTUM PERIOD: REPORT OF 2 CASES

Objective. To investigate the high risk factors, clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary embolism (PE) during pregnancy and the postpartum period.Methods. Two cases of PE during pregnancy and postpartum period were reported retrospectively.Results. The first case was a pregnant woman with congenital heart disease at 39-week gestation. She underwent a successful cesarean section (CS) because of heart disease, but she manifested tachycardia, tachypnea, cyanosis, and dyspnea suddenly on the 10th day after CS and died soon after the onset of these symptoms. The diagnosis of PE was highly suspected clinically. The second case was a twin-pregnancy woman at 35-week gestation. Because of severe perinatal myocardiopathy, cesarean section was performed. Unfortunately, the patient died abruptly on the operation table. The diagnosis of PE was confirmed by autopsy.Conclusions. The maternal mortality of PE during pregnancy and postpartum period is quite high. Whenever there is any doubt, objective examinations for PE should be started early in order to strive for the chances of the anticoagulant therapy.

^(18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT findings of a solitary primary hepatic lymphoma:A case report

Primary hepatic lymphoma is extremely rare,and only a few cases have been described on positron emission tomography(PET) or PET/computed tomography(PET/CT) imaging in the English literature.We report a case of a 55-year-old woman who presented with low-grade fever and weight loss of three months.On CT scanning,a mass was identified which appeared to be a hypoattenuating lesion,on ultrasonographic imaging,the mass was hypoechoic,therefore,liver abscess or hepatic metastasis from a gastrointestinal primary was initially suspected.Tumor markers such as alpha-fetoprotein,carcinoembryonic antigen and carbohydrate antigen 19-9 were within normal limits.PET/CT demonstrated a large abnormal ring-like hypermetabolic focus in the right liver lobe.The lesion was resected and the histo-pathological findings were consistent with lymphoma.The patient was discharged two weeks after surgery and did not receive any further treatment.After 25 mo follow-up,she is in good health.18F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT is useful in confirming the diagnosis of primary hepatic lymphoma by demonstrating no other foci with high uptake in other parts of the body.

Method of Earthquake Prediction Based on the Soliton Mechanisms of Some Shocks

In this paper, a new method of earthquakes prediction taking into account the influence of strain solitary waves as a ＂trigger＂ of some shocks is presented. Methods of forecasting are based on evaluating trajectories of individual solitons and clarification of shocks probability. Solitary waves are considered in solid anisotropic elastic medium and proved that there exist the motion equations solutions in the form of solitary waves. Predicting the trajectories of solitary waves related to the moment problem for the special case of Chebyshev system of functions or exponential problem. This problem is solved using special bijective mapping. Seismic process in the region of Japanese Islands, March 11,2011 is analyzed as an example.

The Spatial Patterns of Initial Errors Related to the “Winter Predictability Barrier” of the Indian Ocean Dipole

In this study, using the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory Climate Model version 2pl （GFDL CM2pl） coupled model, the winter predictability barrier （WPB） is found to exist in the model not only in the growing phase but also the Indian Ocean dipole （IOD） decaying phase of positive events due to the effect of initial errors. In particular, the WPB is stronger in the growing phase than in the decaying phase. These results indicate that initial errors can cause the WPB. The domi- nant patterns of the initial errors that cause the occurrence of the WPB often present an eastern-western dipole both in the surface and subsurface temperature components. These initial errors tend to concentrate in a few areas, and these areas may represent the sensitive areas of the predictions of positive IOD events. By increasing observations over these areas and eliminating initial errors here, the WPB phenomenon may be largely weakened and the forecast skill greatly improved.

THE VARIABILITY CHARACTERISTICS AND PREDICTION OF GUANGDONG POWER LOAD DURING 2002 – 2004

The variability characteristics of Guangdong daily power load from 2002 to 2004 and its connection to meteorological variables are analyzed with wavelet analysis and correlation analysis. Prediction equations are established using optimization subset regression. The results show that a linear increasing trend is very significant and seasonal change is obvious. The power load exhibits significant quasi-weekly (5 – 7 days) oscillation, quasi-by-weekly (10 – 20 days) oscillation and intraseasonal (30 – 60 days) oscillation. These oscillations are caused by atmospheric low frequency oscillation and public holidays. The variation of Guangdong daily power load is obviously in decrease on Sundays, shaping like a funnel during Chinese New Year in particular. The minimum is found at the first and second day and the power load gradually increases to normal level after the third day during the long vacation of Labor Day and National Day. Guangdong power load is the most sensitive to temperature, which is the main affecting factor, as in other areas in China. The power load also has relationship with other meteorological elements to some extent during different seasons. The maximum of power load in summer, minimum during Chinese New Year and variation during Labor Day and National Day are well fitted and predicted using the equation established by optimization subset regression and accounting for the effect of workdays and holidays.

The Relationship between Deterministic and Ensemble Mean Forecast Errors Revealed by Global and Local Attractor Radii

It has been demonstrated that ensemble mean forecasts, in the context of the sample mean, have higher forecasting skill than deterministic(or single) forecasts. However, few studies have focused on quantifying the relationship between their forecast errors, especially in individual prediction cases. Clarification of the characteristics of deterministic and ensemble mean forecasts from the perspective of attractors of dynamical systems has also rarely been involved. In this paper, two attractor statistics—namely, the global and local attractor radii(GAR and LAR, respectively)—are applied to reveal the relationship between deterministic and ensemble mean forecast errors. The practical forecast experiments are implemented in a perfect model scenario with the Lorenz96 model as the numerical results for verification. The sample mean errors of deterministic and ensemble mean forecasts can be expressed by GAR and LAR, respectively, and their ratio is found to approach2^(1/2) with lead time. Meanwhile, the LAR can provide the expected ratio of the ensemble mean and deterministic forecast errors in individual cases.

United States of America in year 1994 enacted a law for telephone communication--Digital Telephony Act, which would require manufacturers of telecommunications equipment, leaving some security holes for control. In addition, we monitor the Internet and large corporations. The example of the United States of America in this action reveals the organization for electronic freedoms against a telecom company that the NSA illegally gains access to data on information technology users and Internet telephony.

Thalidomide induces mucosal healing in Crohn's disease: Case report

Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract that is defi ned by relapsing and remitting episodes. Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) appears to play a central role in the pathophysiology of the disease. Standard therapies for inflammatory bowel disease fail to induce remission in about 30% of patients. Biological therapies have been associated with an increased incidence of infections, especially infection by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Thalidomide is an oral immunomodulatory agent with anti-TNF-α properties. Recent studies have suggested that thalidomide is effective in refractory luminal and fistulizing Crohn's disease. Thalidomide costimulates T lymphocytes, with greater effect on CD8+ than on CD4+ T cells, which contributes to the protective immune response to Mtb infection. We present a case of Crohn's disease with gastric, ileal, colon and rectum involvement as well as steroid dependency, which progressed with loss of response to infliximabafter three years of therapy. The thorax computed tomography scan demonstrated a pulmonary nodule suspected to be Mtb infection. The patient was started on thalidomide therapy and exhibited an excellent response.

Liver abscess and sepsis with Bacillus pantothenticus in an immunocompetent patient:A first case report

Bacillus species are aerobic,gram-positive,spore forming rods that are usually found in the soil,dust,streams,and other environmental sources.Except for Bacillus.anthracis(B.anthracis) ,most species display low virulence,and only rarely cause infections in hosts with weak or damaged immune systems.There are two case reports of B.cereus as a potentially serious bacterial pathogen causing a liver abscess in an immunologically competent patient.We herein report a case of liver abscess and sepsis caused by B.pantothenticus in an immunocompetent patient.Until now,no case of liver abscess due to B.pantothenticus has been reported.

Primary clear cell carcinoma of the nasopharynx:a case report

Primary clear cell carcinoma of the nasopharynx is a rare and locally invasive minor salivary gland neoplasm,only two cases have been reported yet in the literature.Now a 57-year man,with primary nasopharyngeal clear carcinoma,received radiotherapy and chemotherapy.After treatment,the mass of nasopharynx visibly reduced.Follow-up two months and repeated MRI,CT,abdominal B-ultrasonograpy,electronic nasopharyngoscopy,no tumor recurrence or metastasis.

Knowledge Representation Methods in Expert System for Earthquake Prediction ESEP 3.0

Knowledge representation is a key to the building of expert systems. The performance of knowledge representation methods directly affects the intelligence level and the problem-solving ability of the system. There are various kinds of knowledge representation methods in ESEP3.0. In this paper, the authors introduce the knowledge representation methods, such as structure knowledge, seismological and precursory forecast knowledge, machine learning knowledge, synthetic prediction knowledge, knowledge to validate and verify certainty factors of anomalous evidence and support knowledge, etc. and propose a model for validation of certainty factors of anomalous evidence. The knowledge representation methods represent all kinds of earthquake prediction knowledge well.

Pneumonic benign metastasizing leiomyoma:a case report and clinical treatment

Benign metastasizing leiomyoma （BML） is a rare entity usually occuring in females with history of uterus leiomyoma. It appears as a histopathologic benign smooth muscle tumors, distant from the uterus. It is hormone dependent and progresses slowly. Operation is the main clinical treatment. The article was reported one case who was a thirty-eight years old female. She was found to have bilateral lung nodules after hysterectomy of uterine leiomyoma seven years ago. An open lung biopsy revealed that the nodules consist of proliferating smooth muscle cells with a histopathologic feature which was similar to her uterus leiomyoma. Positive staining of estrogen and progesterone receptors were detected, which proved the turner originate from utedne. The patient did not accept operation, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or other treatment. We still follow up the development of the case.

Molecular mechanism and functional consequences of lansoprazole-mediated heme oxygenase-1 induction

AIM： To investigate the molecular mechanism and functional consequences of heme oxygenase-1 （HO-1） activation by lansoprazole in endothelial cells and macrophages. METHODS： Expression of HO-1 mRNA was analyzed by Northern blotting. Western blotting was used to determine the HO-1 and ferritin protein levels. NADPH-dependent reactive oxygen species （ROS） formation was measured with lucigenin-enhanced chemiluminescence. HO-1 promoter activity in mouse fibroblasts, stably transfected with a 15-kb HO-1 gene that drives expression of the reporter gene luciferase, was assessed usingin vivo bioluminescence imaging. RESULTS： Lansoprazole levels in endothelial cells increased HO-1 mRNA and HO-1 protein levels in macrophages. In addition, lansoprazole-induced ferritin protein levels in both cell systems. Moreover, induction of the antioxidant proteins HO-1 and ferritin by lansoprazole was followed by a decrease in NADPH- mediated ROS formation. The radical scavenging properties of lansoprazole were diminished in the presence of the HO inhibitor, chromium mesoporphyrin IX. Induction of HO-1 gene expression by lansoprazole was not related to oxidative stress or to the activation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway. However, the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase inhibitor LY294002 showed a concentration-dependent inhibition of HO-1 mRNA and promoter activity.CONCLUSION： Activation of HO-1 and ferritin may account for the gastric protection of lansoprazole and is dependent on a pathway blocked by LY294002.
