An improved method with better selection capability using a single camera was presented in comparison with previous method. To improve performance, two methods were applied to landmark selection in an unfamiliar indoor environment. First, a modified visual attention method was proposed to automatically select a candidate region as a more useful landmark. In visual attention, candidate landmark regions were selected with different characteristics of ambient color and intensity in the image. Then, the more useful landmarks were selected by combining the candidate regions using clustering. As generally implemented, automatic landmark selection by vision-based simultaneous localization and mapping(SLAM) results in many useless landmarks, because the features of images are distinguished from the surrounding environment but detected repeatedly. These useless landmarks create a serious problem for the SLAM system because they complicate data association. To address this, a method was proposed in which the robot initially collected landmarks through automatic detection while traversing the entire area where the robot performed SLAM, and then, the robot selected only those landmarks that exhibited high rarity through clustering, which enhanced the system performance. Experimental results show that this method of automatic landmark selection results in selection of a high-rarity landmark. The average error of the performance of SLAM decreases 52% compared with conventional methods and the accuracy of data associations increases. 展开更多

Motion estimation based feature selection for visual SLAM

Feature selection is always an important issue in the visual SLAM (simultaneous location and mapping) literature. Considering that the location estimation can be improved by tracking features with larger value of visible time, a new feature selection method based on motion estimation is proposed. First, a k-step iteration algorithm is presented for visible time estimation using an affme motion model; then a delayed feature detection method is introduced for efficiently detecting features with the maximum visible time. As a means of validation for the proposed method, both simulation and real data experiments are carded out. Results show that the proposed method can improve both the estimation performance and the computational performance compared with the existing random feature selection method. 展开更多

To improve the coding performance of H.264/AVC, this paper proposes a rate control scheme composed of a novel flame complexity optimized selection and a quantization parameter (QP) value computation approach. First, it extracts the frame coding complexity from two rate distortion models, and then introduces five statistic modes to estimate the frame coding complexity. An optimal mode is selected according to the coding efficiency. Finally the paper presents a novel QP calculation method for the H.264/AVC rate control. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithra outperforms the algorithm integrated in the 3M model in obtaining precise frame coding complexity, achieving robust buffer control and improving coding quality. And the improving visual quality is high up to 0.90dB for CIF sequences. 展开更多

This paper critically reviews Hossein Nassaji's Language Learning article, which systematically overviews the recent language processing theories, it is especially pertinent to schema theory as well as Walter Kintsch's construction-integration (CI) theory in reading comprehension. The article thoroughly investigates the unified theory (as Kintsch defines), construction-integration theory in text comprehension, which is mainly based upon the comparison with and analysis of the applications of schema theory from the perspective of language reading comprehension. The author tries to work out and illustrate this model as an alternative approach to the schema-oriented models previously used to solve reading comprehension problems in language teaching and leaning. 展开更多

Guppies are a classic model for sensory drive as mate preferences based on coloration differ across individuals and populations. A large body of work has identified variation in color vision, yet we lack a dir ect tie between how such variation in color vision influences variation in color preference. Here we bring together studies that have investigated guppy vision over the past 40years to: (1) highlight our current understanding of where variation occurs in the guppy color vision pathway and (2) suggest future ave nues of research into sources of visual system variation that could influence guppy color preference. This will allow researchers to design careful studies that couple measures of color preference with measures of visual system variation from the same individual or population. Such studies will finally provide im portant answers as to what sets the direction and speed of mate preference evolution via sensory drive. 展开更多

Objective To examine whether the selectivity of visual cortical neurons to stimulus spatial frequencies would be affected by aging in cats.Methods In vivo extracellular single-unit recording techniques were employed to record the tuning responses of V1 neurons to different stimulus spatial frequencies in old and young adult cats.Results Statistical analysis showed that the mean optimal spatial frequency of grating stimuli that evoked the maximal response of V1 neurons in old cats was significantly lower than that in young adult cats.Furthermore,the mean high cut-off spatial frequency of grating stimuli that evoked the half amplitude of the maximal response of V1 neurons in old cats was also significantly lower than that in young adult cats.Conclusion These results are consistent with those reported in the V1 of old monkeys,suggesting that the age-related decline in the selectivity of visual cortical cells to spatial frequency could be generalized to all mammalian species and might contribute to visual acuity reduction in senescent individuals. 展开更多

In order to reduce the computational complexity of the high efficiency video coding(HEVC) standard, a new algorithm for HEVC intra prediction, namely, fast prediction unit(PU) size selection method for HEVC based on salient regions is proposed in this paper. We first build a saliency map for each largest coding unit(LCU) to reduce its texture complexity. Secondly, the optimal PU size is determined via a scheme that implements an information entropy comparison among sub-blocks of saliency maps. Finally, we apply the partitioning result of saliency map on the original LCUs, obtaining the optimal partitioning result. Our algorithm can determine the PU size in advance to the angular prediction in intra coding, reducing computational complexity of HEVC. The experimental results show that our algorithm achieves a 37.9% reduction in encoding time, while producing a negligible loss in Bjontegaard delta bit rate(BDBR) of 0.62%. 展开更多
