Eucalyptus forests are grown in many parts of the world for their commercial value and use in construction projects. Density management becomes im- portant as a means to attain the management goals in these forests. Changes in canopy and tree crown structure were quantified for Eucalyptus urophylla x E. grandis forests at different ages to determine when canopy closure occurs and the onset of competition begins. Site index was developed for these forests to determine whether site quality affects the canopy structure. Site index had little effect in the forests sampled, with the forest canopy on the better sites becoming slightly more elongated. Based upon crown projection ratio and crown diameter: dbh (diameter at breast height) ratio, it appears that crown closure occurs by age 4 years in these forests. The age at which this occurs was also checked and verified with the evaluation of relative spacing, RS (the ratio of the mean distance between trees to the average dominant height of the stand). The RS value displayed a rapid decline until age 4 years, and then became relatively flat through age 21 years. The rapid height growth during the first 3 years with no change in density accounted for this rapid decrease. By age 4 years, reductions in the number of trees due to mortality began to have more of an influence on this value, resulting in a more gradual de- cline. The implications for management are discussed. 展开更多

Distribution of monsoon forests is important for the research of carbon and water cycles in the tropical regions. In this paper, a simple approach is proposed to map monsoon forests using the Normalized Difference Vegetation lndex (NDVI) derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. Owing to the high contrast of greenness between wet season and dry season, the monsoon forest can be easily discriminated from other forests by combining the maximum and minimum annual NDVI. The MODIS-based monsoon forest maps (MODMF) from 2000 to 2009 are derived and evaluated using the ground-truth dataset. The MODMF achieves an average producer accuracy of 80.0% and the Kappa statistic of 0.719. The variability of MODMF among different years is compared with that calculated from MODIS land cover products (MCD 12Q 1). The results show that the coefficient of variation of total monsoon forest area in MODMF is 7.3%, which is far lower than that in MCD12Q1 with 24.3%. Moreover, the pixels in MODMv which can be identified for 7 to 9 times between 200l and 2009 account for 53.1%, while only 7.9% ofMCD12QI pixels have this frequency. Additionally, the monsoon forest areas estimated in MODMF, Global Land Cover 2000 (GLC2000), MCDI2Q1 and University of Maryland (UMD) products are compared with the statistical dataset at national level, which reveals that MODMv has the highest R^2 of 0.95 and the lowest RMSE of 14 014 km^2. This algorithm is simple but reliable for mapping the monsoon forests without complex classification techniques. 展开更多

Most existing network representation learning algorithms focus on network structures for learning. However, network structure is only one kind of view and feature for various networks, and it cannot fully reflect all characteristics of networks. In fact, network vertices usually contain rich text information, which can be well utilized to learn text-enhanced network representations.Meanwhile,Matrix-Forest Index(MFI)has shown its high effectiveness and stability in link prediction tasks compared with other algorithms of link prediction. Both MFI and Inductive Matrix Completion(IMC)are not well applied with algorithmic frameworks of typical representation learning methods. Therefore,we proposed a novel semi-supervised algorithm,tri-party deep network representation learning using inductive matrix completion(TDNR).Based on inductive matrix completion algorithm,TDNR incorporates text features, the link certainty degrees of existing edges and the future link probabilities of non-existing edges into network representations. The experimental results demonstrated that TFNR outperforms other baselines on three real-world datasets. The visualizations of TDNR show that proposed algorithm is more discriminative than other unsupervised approaches. 展开更多

The spatial and temporal changes of landscape pattern and their driving forces in each functional zone of Nanling National Nature Reserve were analyzed based on the GIS and RS platform. The results showed that from 1988 to 2009, in respect of changes of Jandscape area, the main forest landscape accounted about 95% of the total area, of which evergreen broad-leaved forest had the largest area, accounting for more than 50% of the total area. The dominant landscape was coniferous forest. In respect of landscape fragmentation, the density index of land- scape in the whole area increased, and the degree of landscape fragmentation also increased. In the core area, the patch density decreased slightly, and the average patch area of each type of landscape increased; the degree of landscape fragmen- tation increased slightly. In the buffer area and the experimental area, the degree of landscape fragmentation increased. In terms of landscape diversity, the landscape pattern in the whole area became complex, and the diversity index of landscape in- creased and the degree of heterogeneity increased. In the core area, the diversity index of landscape increased slightly. In the buffer area, it increased significantly. In the experiment area, the diversity index reduced, and the degree of landscape het- erogeneity reduced. In the whole study area, the landscape tended to be diversified. The landscape pattern of the experimental area was consistent with that of the whole study area, and there was no obvious change in the buffer zone, while the landscape pattern in the core area developed towards the single direction. 展开更多

The impacts of mechanised forest harvesting to soil physical properties are the major concern by forest managers, which have the potential to impact soil sustainability and forest productivity. Malaysia is practicing reduce impact logging (RIL) and applying code of forest harvest practice in forest harvesting and operations for sustainable forest resources management. In 2001, a machinery called Rimbaka Timber Harvester R2020-A was introduced for timber extraction for peat swamp forest and later on the machine was introduced to the hill tropical forest as an alternative to other machines. The study aimed to evaluate soil compaction (soil cone index, soil bulk density, soil moisture content and soil pore space) by Rimbaka Timber Harvester R2020-A and crawler tractor KOMATSU D60-A. A total of five samples were randomly taken using core sampler of 50 mm height and 50 mm diameter at the beneath a lug imprint for passes 1, 4 and 8. Altogether samples were 45. The locations of sample were to the fight and left of each rut centre for both machines. Treatment effects were evaluated using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Result showed that compaction by Rimbaka machine was increased bulk density from 1.14 to 1.43 g/cc, cone index from 1.94 to 3.45 g/cm3 decreased total pore space by 43% and decreased soil moisture content by 19%. Meanwhile compaction by KOMATSU D60-A was increased bulk density from 1.2 to 1.43 g/co, cone index from 1.24 to 1.94 g/cm3 decreased soil moisture content by 11% and total pore space by 6%, respectively. The value increased rapidly as more passes increase on the track surface. The higher soil disturbance by Rimbaka machine was due to physical design and specification of the machine. This study also observed that there was significant difference in the total passes of machinery used in harvesting operation. Although Rimbaka machine is showing more effected to soil compaction, the machine is a practical alternative to avoid skid trail and reduce road density in forest area. 展开更多

Leaf area index(LAI) of Teak(Tectona grandis) and Bamboo(Dendrocalamus strictus) grown in Shoolpaneshwar Wildlife Sanctuary of Narmada District,Gujarat,India was obtained by destructive sampling,photo-grid method and by litter trap method. An allometric equation(between leaf area by litter trap method and canopy spread area) was developed for the determination of LAI.Results show that LAI value calculated by the developed allometric equation was similar to that estimated by destructive sampling and photo-grid method, with Root Mean Square Error(RMSE) of 0.90 and 1.15 for Teak, and 0.38 and 0.46 for Bamboo, respectively. There was a perfect match in both the LAI values(estimated and calculated),indicating the accuracy of the developed equations for both the species. In conclusion, canopy spread is a better and sensitive parameter to estimate leaf area of trees. The developed equations can be used for estimating LAI of Teak and Bamboo in tropics. 展开更多

The framework of forest valuation accounting has been formed through the development stages of timber value calculation, forest ecosystem valuation and entire value accounting of forest resources, including the forest values of resources in kind, environmental resources and social benefits in China. These theory and methods still face deviation of theories and methods from vague position of discipline, larger accounting results from ignoring differences between forest ecological functions and ecosystem services, and unrealistic and other problems from non-standard index system and accounting methods due to the development history and other reasons. Five suggestions are proposed to make explicit the object and purpose of the forest resource value accounting, establish universal, scientific, measurable and concise index system for value evaluation, calculate forest resources value in consideration of forest type and position, distinguish accurately the functions from benefits of the forest resources, and suit value calculation result to the practice of social economy. 展开更多

Many methods have been developed to determine characteristics and intensity of this impact. Methodologically, they can be divided into three groups: environmental parameter, bioindicative and combined methods. To evaluate the environmental impact a combined method was used in this study, it was based on trees as the bioindicators and their response reactions, and environmental parameter analysis. In this study the bioindicator was Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.), whose response reaction was used to explain total impact volumes of environmental factors in different places in the region of Kurzeme and try to interpret the causes of these differences. As the bioindicators criterion was used response reaction of Norway spruce during a period of 20 years, which was expressed with cumulative and annual additional volume increment, and was depending on the location of the stand and its morphometric characteristics. The empirical material was collected in Kurzeme region in 28 sample plots that are located on two transects and in one reference stand. For the evaluation the widths of the last 40 year growth rings were measured. To express the environmental impact in Kurzeme region a multiple regression model was developed, which explains the environmental impact in the volume of 68.2%, the rest part can be explained by the local conditions of each stand. It must be noted that methodology used in this study is very sensitive, thus, each of the nuances in the dynamics of volume's annual reduced additional increments has biological and ecological cause. 展开更多

Forests play an important role in the global carbon cycle and have a potential impact on global climatic change.Monitoring forest biomass is of considerable importance in understanding the hydrological cycle.Because of the problem of dense forest cover,no reliable method with which to retrieve soil moisture in forest areas from the microwave emission signature has been established. All of these issues relate to the microwave emissivity and transmissivity characteristics of a forest. The microwave emission contribution received by a sensor above a forest canopy comes from both the soil surface and the vegetation layer. To analyze the relationship of forest biomass and forest emission and transmissivity,a high-order emission model, the matrix-doubling model, which consists of both soil and vegetation models, was developed and then validated for a young deciduous forest stand in a field experiment. To simulate the emissivity and transmissivity of a deciduous forest in the L and X bands using the matrix-doubling model, the parameters of components of deciduous trees when the leaf area index varies from 1 to10 were generated by an L-system and a forest growth model. The emissivity and transmissivity of a forest and the relationships of these parameters to forest biomass are presented and analyzed in this paper.Emissivity in the L band when the leaf area index is less than 6 and at viewing angles less than 40°,and transmissivity in the L band are the most sensitive parameters in deciduous forest biomass estimation. 展开更多
