真实指代词的恰当使用需要辅以施动者的指示动作。虽然有助于说明语句认知意义的差异,但指示本身呈现对象的方式(即弗雷格式指示涵义)却不是真实指代词所表达的内容。它发挥的作用是在使用语境固定真实指代词所表达的内容。这一功用也可通过将真实指代词转变为dthat短语顺利实现。作为纯粹索引词,dthat短语能够更直白地揭示指示涵义是在近似于特征的维度发挥认知性作用,并用以构造、说明有力的先验偶然性和后验必然性案例。不过,无论本体地抑或认知地,固定真实指代词特定使用所表达的内容都尚需诉诸指导指示的意向;后者总是试图以为听众或对话者分享的方式支配或影响指示涵义,否则就会出现功能失常,不能妥当地固定真实指代词所指。
