T-he number of intermediate condensers and/or intermediate reboilers, the placement locations, the.operating pressure of column, and the heat duties of intermediate heat exchangers are treated as optimization variables. A novel coding procedure making use of an integer number series is proposed to represent and manipulate the structure of system and a stage-to-stage method is used for column design and cost calculation. With the representation procedure, the synthesis problem is formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem, which can then be solved with an improved simulated annealing algorithm. Two examples are illustrated to show the effectiveness of the suggested approach.展开更多

The modification on HEN of the chilling train for increasing energy recovery does not always coordinate with the minimum shaft work consumption of the corresponding refrigeration system. In this paper, a systematic approach for optimizing low-temperature system is presented through mathematical method and exergy analysis. The possibility of "pockets", which appears as right nose section in the grand composite curve(EGCC) of the process, is first optimized. The EGCC with the pockets cutting down is designed as a separate part. A case study is used to illustrate the application of the approach for a HEN of a chilling train with propylene and ethylene refrigerant system in an ethylene production process.展开更多

Resin samples with different initial water contents were also investigated. The study indicated that TGA, as a complementary evaluating method for the plug flow reactor system approach, could be used as a fast analyzing means for study on the thermal stability of ion-exchange resin catalysts. The stoichiometric calculation of the isothermally treated resin catalysts based on the FTIR analysis and acid capacity confirmed that the weight loss of the resins at 150℃ and 200℃ was caused by the desulfonation process and that desulfonation occurred mainly at the para-position of the benzene ring in the resins. H+ ions and moisture played an important role in the desulfonation process.展开更多

Nowadays they reach 200 W/cmz at chip level and 50 W/cm2 at heatsink base level. Water cooling is the most effective cooling method but unfortunately water is often undesired due to high voltages or costumer requirements. Two-phase cooling is a promising technology for electronics cooling. It allows using dielectric fluids in passive systems and still benefits from very high heat transfer coefficients. Thermosyphons are a particularly interesting technology in the field of power electronics because it is entirely passive and a simple equipment. ABB has developed a compact thermosyphon heat exchanger based on automotive technology, which uses numerous multi-port extruded tubes with capillary sized channels disposed in parallel and brazed to a heated base plate in order to achieve the desired compactness. The experimental performances of this novel power electronics cooling system are presented with R134a as a working fluid. The influence of several parameters on the performances was studied experimentally: coolant flow rate, coolant temperature, heat load and fluid filling.展开更多

The effects of the global parameter a (integrating the coefficient of convective heat transfer, the overall area occupied by fin and its thermal conductivity) and the volume fraction ? of fin on the minimums of equivalent thermal resistance and maximum thermal resistance as well as their corresponding optimal configurations are analyzed. The comparison of the results based on the above two optimization objectives is conducted. The results show that the optimal structures based on the two optimization objectives are obviously different from each other. Compared with the optimization result by taking the minimization of maximum thermal resistance as the objective, the optimization result by taking the equivalent thermal resistance minimization as the objective can reduce the average temperature difference in the fin obviously. The increases of a and ? can all improve the working status of local hot spot and the global heat transfer performance of the system. But the improvement effects of the increases of a and ? on the minimization of equivalent thermal resistance are different from those on the minimization of maximum thermal resistance. For either objective, the effect of a is different from that of ?. The T-shaped fin with minimum equivalent thermal resistance is much taller than that with minimum maximum thermal resistance; for either optimization objective, the stem of fin is thicker than the branches of fin, and the stem thickness is relatively close to branch thickness when the minimization of equivalent thermal resistance is taken as the optimization objective. The T-shaped fin with flat stem and slender branches can benefit the reduction of the maximum thermal resistance.展开更多

The shapes of the aggregates were controlled by varying the ratio of Zn2~ and OH- ions in the reaction system, while the size can be tuned from 2μm to 100 nm. Oriented attachment was found to be the main mechanism of the three-dimensional assembly of small ZnO nanocrystallites into large aggregates. The performance of these aggregates in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) indicated that hierarchical structured photoelectrodes can increase energy conversion efficiency of DSCs effectively when the sizes of aggregates match the wavelengths of visible light.展开更多

The pattern formations have been investigated by the bifurcation theory, weakly nonlinear theories and computational approaches. The boundary conditions for the velocity on the upper and lower boundaries are usually assumed as stress-free or no-slip. In the first part of this paper, some bifurcation pictures for the case of the stress-free on the upper boundary and the no-slip on the lower boundary are obtained. In the second part of this paper, the bifurcation pictures for the case of the stress-free on both boundaries by a computer assisted proof are verified. At last., Bénard-Marangoni heat convections for the ease of the free surface of the upper boundary are considered.展开更多

Its thermal performances could be improved by improving the uniformity of the phase change material (PCM) temperature distribution. Thus, a novel non-equidistant helical-coil structure was proposed in this study. Its coil pitch decreased along the flow direction of heat transfer fluid, which made the heat exchange area in unit volume increase to match the decreasing temperature difference between the heat transfer fluid and PCM. The structure was optimized using numerical simulation. An experimental system was developed and the experiment results indicated that the proposed non-equidistant helical-coil heat accumulator was more effective than equidistant helical-coil for latent heat storage. The uniformity of the temperaalre distribution was also confirmed by simulation results.展开更多
