The esterification kinetics of lactic acid with methanol catalyzed by strong-acid cation-exchange resins (Amberlyst-15,D001, D002, NKC, 002) was studied under the condition that simulates the real catalytic environment. Experimental results were correlated by a Langmuir-Hinselwood model and the nonideality of the solution was taken into account by using activities calculated by the universal quasichemical functional group activity coefficient (UNIFAC) method.A good agreement between the model and the experimental data was achieved. Continuous purification experiments were conducted to find the optimum column configuration and operation condition for the system. The effects of various parameters, e.g. the length of different section of the column, feed rate and ratio of reactants, packing material and catalyst type, were studied. This novel system shows good separation results in lab scale, and is potential for industrial application.展开更多

The focus of this paper is the development of algorithms for computation of guide surfaces contact forces with acceptable engineering accuracy for real time simulation of assembly operations. Therefore, each complex guide surface is described as a set of contacting elements. Each contacting element for one's part can be represented by a finite set of geometric primitives which geometry is described by low order algebraic equations. So contact conditions and geometric parameters for all pairs of primitives are determined by analytical expressions. Math models are developed for two classes of contact interaction. The first class includes all cases when each contacting surface has several degrees of freedom of motion. Therefore, contact reactions introduced into differential equations of motion are calculated by using contacting elements penetrations, stiffness and damping parameters. The second class corresponds to all cases when one of contacting surfaces has insignificant inertia and only one degree of freedom of relative displacement counteracted by a spring. Here contact reactions are calculated from spring tension with any practical accuracy. This is very useful in some practical applications. Presented algorithms provide real time simulation together with some approaches for reduction of redundant comnutations.展开更多

Promoters Ba,K, and Sm increased the activity of Ru/AC catalysts for ammonia synthesis significantly. Much higher activity can be reached for Ru/AC catalyst with bi- or tri-promoters. Indeed, the triply promoted catalyst showed the highest activity, coupled to a surprisingly high resistance to methanation. The ability of resistance of promoter to methanation of Ru/AC catalyst is dependent on the adsorption intensity of hydrogen. The strong adsorption of hydrogen would enhance methanation and impact the adsorption of nitrogen, which results in the decrease of catalytic activity.展开更多

The effect of the support plate on the dynamic response of the pre-stressed anchor is of particular interest. A theoretical analysis and numerical simulations are used to identify the factors affecting the contact stress between the support plate and the rock wall. A formula allowing the calculation of contact stress is presented. Stress wave propagation through the nut, support plate, and rock wall are predicted. The dynamic response signals were measured in the field using prestressed anchors pre-tightened to different torques. The effects from the support plate on the dynamic response were recorded and the results compared to the predictions of pre-stressed anchor. This work provides a theoretical reference for the signal processing of dynamic reflected wave signals in anchor bolts.展开更多
