SSI/PI has applications when soil texture variability affects soil water holding capacity or when crop yield or biotic stresses (insects or diseases) are spatially variable. SSI/PI uses variable rate application technologies, mainly with center-pivots or lateral-move or linear irrigation machines, to match crop needs or soil water holding constraints. Variable rate applications are achieved by variable nozzle flow rates, pulsing nozzle flows, or multiple nozzles on separate submains. Newer center pivot and linear machines are controlled by on-board microprocessor systems that can be integrated with supervisory control and data acquisition controllers for both communication and control of the variable rate application for specific sets of nozzles or individual nozzles for management zones. Communication for center pivot or linear controllers typically uses radio telemetry, wireless interact links, or cellular telephones. Precision irrigation has limited utility without precise irrigation scheduling (temporally and spatially). Plant or soil sensors are used to initiate or complete an irrigation event. Automated weather stations provide site information for determining the irrigation requirement using crop models or simpler reference evapotranspiration (ET), data to be used with crop coefficients. Remote sensing is being used to measure crop water status or crop development from spectral reflectance. Near-surface remote sensing with sensors mounted on moving irrigation systems provide critical spatial integration from point weather networks and feedback on crop ET and irrigation controls in advanced automated systems for SSI/PI.展开更多

The DTN is designed with two throats, an upstream minimum and a downstream minimum at the nozzle exit, with a cavity in between the upstream throat and exit. In the present study, a computational work has been carried out to analyze the performance of a dual throat nozzle at various mass flow rates of secondary flow and nozzle pressure ratios (NPR). Two-dimensional, steady, compressible Navier-Stokes equations were solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. The present computational results were validated with available experimental data. Based on the present results, the control effectiveness of thrust-vectoring is discussed in terms of the thrust coefficient and the coefficient of discharge.展开更多

As a result, the transition causes excessive side-loads that may damage the nozzle. Thus, it is important to investigate the method in order to control the asymmetric flow separation. In the present study, the relationship between the asymmetric separation and the rate of change of the pressure ratio with time was investigated from the point of view of the transition from FSS to RSS in the supersonic nozzle experimentally. Further, change of the flow separation by using step and cavity, and the possibility of the control was demonstrated. As a result, it was shown that the method using a cavity was effective for the control of the separation pattern.展开更多

The standard k- ε turbulence model was employed to close the governing equations. Numerical calculations were carried out for some combinations of the multiple orifice configurations. The present CFD data showed that the orifice systems, which have been applied to incompressible flow regime to date, could not be used for the high operating pressure ratio flows. The orifice interval did not strongly affect the total pressure drop, but the orifice area ratio more than 2.5 led to relatively high pressure drops. The total pressure drop rapidly increased in the range of the operating pressure ratio from 1.5 to 4.0, but it nearly did not increase when the operating pressure ratio was over 4.0. In the compressible pipe flows through double and triple orifice systems, the total pressure drop was largely due to shock losses.展开更多

A 3BSD nozzle's deflection angle and direction are changed through rotations of three revolute pairs. There is a nonlinear relationship between the deflection an- gle/direction and the rotation angles. The rotation speed of a revolute pair is limited by the power of the actuator. The moment of inertia and the aerodynamic load for each revolute pair are different and time-varying. A high-precision control system of 3BSD nozzles is required for applications on vertical and/or short take-off and landing (V/STOL) aircrafts. Difficulties of co- ordination control of 3BSD nozzles are distinct travel ranges, speed constraints, time^xarying dynamic models, and disturb- ances. The proposed control strategy is a combination of the characteristic model and tlF e dynamic control allocation method. A dynamic control allocation module is used as the coordination supervisor, which is aware of the kinematic model, the con- straints, and the dynamic models of the revolute pairs. Second-order characteristic models are used to represent the dynamic behavior of the revolute pairs. The gradient projection algorithm is modified for parameter estimation. A modified all-coefficient adaptive controller is developed to reject the disturbances. Experimental results of a scaled 3BSD nozzle indi- cate that the coordination control strategy is effective.展开更多
