Transported into the Bosom of the Empire? Rethinking How Arthur Conan Doyle Persuades His Readers of British Imperialism in "The Speckled Band"

Brock have proposed their transportation-imagery model of narrative persuasion. They argue that a narrative can evoke imagery in readers' mind and then transport readers into the narrative world the author has created, in the course of which the author can persuade readers of the beliefs he's put into the narrative. This paper employs this model to rethink how Arthur Conan Doyle persuades his readers of British imperialism in his "The Speckled Band". First, this model considers the vividness of the narrative and readers' participatory response as key factors in readers' transportation. The narratives of "The Speckled Band" are picturesque, and Sherlock Holmes' inferential process has reinforced readers' participatory response. On the other hand, detective fiction usually has the theme of how the detective/law and order beats the criminal/chaos. That is, Doyle persuades his readers that the British Empire will prevail in "The Speckled Band" when Holmes, representing the British imperialism, solves the case and kills Dr. Roylott, who represents the evil and savagery in the British colony. According to Green and Brock's model, it simply means that there are two narratives (i.e., one is about how the law of the British Empire is challenged, and the other is about how the British Empire's stability is restored), and two complementary transportations before Doyle can successfully persuades his readers. However, if we closely read "'The Speckled Band", we can learn that Holmes, who should have represented British law, is guilty of trespassing or taking the law into his own hands. In other words, the complementarity of the two transportations is compromised. Thus, we can conclude that it is highly questionable whether or not Doyle can transport his readers into the bosom of the British Empire. 展开更多

Objective:To investigate the mechanism of trigger point deactivation induced by pressing manipulation in a rat model and to explore its potential regulation of the inflammatory response through the extracellular signal-regulated kinase(ERK)/nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB)pathway.Methods:Fifty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into a blank group,a model group,a pressing manipulation group,an ERK agonist group, and a pressing manipulation+ERK agonist group, with 10 rats in each group.Except for the blank group, rats in other groups were used to establish the trigger point rat model using the blunt blow combined with the eccentric exercise method. The pressing manipulation group underwent pressing manipulation intervention at the trigger points. The ERK agonist group received an injection of recombinant human epidermal growth factor via the tail vein. The pressing manipulation+ERK agonist group received interventions from both the pressing manipulation and ERK agonist groups. The pressure pain threshold(PPT)was measured by a mechanical pain threshold detector before and after the intervention. The histological changes were evaluated by hematoxylin-eosin staining after the intervention;the expression levels of ERK,phosphorylated ERK(p-ERK),NF-κB p65(p65),phosphorylated NF-κB p65(p-p65),and phosphorylated NF-κB inhibitor(p-IκB)were detected by Western blotting;the levels of interleukin(IL)-1β,IL-6,and tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-αwere detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results:The PPT increased(P<0.05);the inflammatory cells disappeared;the ratios of p-ERK/ERK,p-p65/p65,and p-IκB/β-actin,also the levels of IL-1β,IL-6,and TNF-αall decreased in the pressing manipulation group after the intervention compared with the model group(P<0.05).The PPT decreased significantly(P<0.05),the inflammatory cell presence increased, and the ratios of p-ERK/ERK and p-p65/p65 were elevated(P<0.05);additionally,the levels of IL-6 and TNF-αwere significantly higher in the pressing manipulation+ERK agonist group compared with the pressing manipulation group(P<0.05).The PPT was significantly lower(P<0.05),the inflammatory cell count was higher, the ratios of p-ERK/ERK and p-IκB/β-actin and the levels of IL-1βand TNF-αwere significantly higher in the ERK agonist group compared with the pressing manipulation+ERK agonist group(P<0.05).Conclusion:Pressing manipulation can effectively alleviate inflammation and pain in trigger point model rats, potentially by inhibiting the ERK/NF-κB signaling pathway. 展开更多

Objective:To observe the clinical efficacy of different therapies in treating straightened cervical curvature. Methods:A hundred patients with straightened cervical curvature were randomized into 5 groups to receive corresponding treatment. The clinical efficacies and the changes of cervical curvature in the five groups were compared. Results:Different therapies all produced certain effectiveness in treating cervical spondylosis patients. The total effective rates in the acupuncture group and tuina group were both 100%, and the rates in the traction group, oral medication group and Chinese medicinal application group were all lower than the rates in the acupuncture group and tuina group (P〈0.05). It was shown that the more significant the change of cervical curvature, the more significant the clinical efficacy. Conclusion:Correcting the straightened cervical curvature is a way to swiftly release pain brought by cervical spondylosis; the optimization of different therapies ensures the achievement of long-term effectiveness; acupuncture and tuina are both effective in restoring the cervical curvature. 展开更多

Objective:To explore the optimal thermal effect parameter combination of An-pressing manipulation based on the pressing force, time and frequency, and to compare the thermal effect differences between the rhythmic and the continuous An-pressing manipulations. Methods:Three levels of light, moderate and heavy pressing forces were determined according to the An-pressing forces of the clinical tuina physicians;the pressing time and frequency parameters were determined according to the literatures about An-pressing manipulation. The volunteers were stimulated by the homemade An-pressing manipulation stimulator on the right Xinshu (BL 15), and then the three-factor and three-level orthogonal tests were carried out according to the test sequence specified by the L9(34) orthogonal table, and the temperature before and after pressing was recorded by an infrared thermal imaging system to screen the best parameters for the thermal effect of the An-pressing manipulation, thus to determine the optimal pressing parameters. The optimal parameters were then used for both continuous and rhythmic An-pressing manipulations to stimulate the bilateral Xinshu (BL 15). The temperature changes after pressing and the duration of the thermal effect (temperature difference ≤0.5℃ on both sides) were recorded by the infrared thermal imaging system, to explore the differences in the thermal effects of different An-pressing manipulations. Results:Among the three factors of pressing force, time and frequency, the influences of different pressing forces on temperature were significantly different (F=32.843,P=0.030), and the influence of 2.5 kg pressing force was the most significant;the effects of different pressing time on temperature were significantly different (F=54.102,P=0.018), and the pressing time of 7.5 min was the most significant;the influences of different pressing frequencies on temperature were not statistically significant (F=2.181,P=0.314), though the influence of 10 times/min pressing frequency was the largest. The influences on temperature difference of the rhythmic and the continuous An-pressing manipulations were significantly different (P=0.031 on the left side andP=0.045 on the right side), but there was no statistical difference in the duration of the thermal effect (P=0.690). Conclusion:The An-pressing manipulation parameters that significantly affect the temperature difference are pressing force and time. The optimal combination of thermal effect parameters is pressing force of 2.5 kg, time of 7.5 min, and frequency of 10 times/min. The local thermal effect of the rhythmic An-pressing manipulation is significantly greater than of the continuous An-pressing manipulation. 展开更多

Objective: To observe the clinical efficacy and action mechanism of Jin's three-needle acupuncture plus Long's chiropractic tuina manipulations in treating cervical vertigo. Methods: By adopting a randomized controlled method, 80 eligible patients were randomized into an observation group of 41 cases and a control group of 39 cases. The control group was intervened by Jin's cervical three-needle acupuncture plus acupuncture at the vertigo-pain points and Fengchi (GB 20); the observation group was by Long's chiropractic tuina manipulations in addition to the treatment given to the control. For both groups, the intervention was given once a day, 7 sessions as a treatment course, with a 1-day interval after a course, for 2 courses in total. The therapeutic efficacy was evaluated after the first session and the second treatment course, at the 3-month and 6-month follow-ups. Results: After the first session, the recovery plus markedly effective rate of the observation group was significantly higher than that of the control group (P〈0.01); the rate was markedly higher in the observation group than that in the control group after 2 treatment courses (P〈0.01); at the 3-month follow-up, the relapse rate was 2.5% in the observation group versus 23.5% in the control, and the between-group difference was statistically insignificant (P〉0.05); the 6-month follow-up study showed that the relapse rate was 5.0% in the observation group versus 21.6% in the control group, and the between-group difference was statistically significant (P〈0.05); at the 6-month follow-up, the total relapse rate was 7.5% in the observation group versus 35.1% in the control group, and the inter-group difference was statistically significant (P〈O.01). Conclusion: The two treatment protocols are both effective in treating cervical vertigo. However, due to its more significant efficacy, more efficient action and lower relapse rate compared to acupuncture alone, acupuncture plus tuina can be regarded as a verified protocol for cervical vertigo. 展开更多

Objective:To explore the mechanism of An-pressing manipulation in improving post-stroke muscle spasticity,by observing the changes of γ-aminobutyric acid(GABA)and glycine(GIy)in plasma and gray matter of L1-L3 spinal cord anterior horn in post-stroke rats with muscle spasticity after An-pressing manipulation intervention. Methods:Ten of 80 adult male Sprague-Dawley(SD)rats were randomly selected as the blank group, and the remaining 70 were used for modeling. The middle cerebral artery occlusion(MCAO)rat model was established by insertion suture occlusion method in the left external carotid artery.Thirty rats with a Longa neurological score of 2-3 points and a modified Ashworth spasticity scale score of 1,1+,or 2 were included in the experiment.Using the random number table method, the 30 successfully modeled rats were randomly divided into a model group,an An-pressing tendon group and an An-pressing muscle belly group. Two days after modeling, rats in the An-pressing tendon group and An-pressing muscle belly group received An-pressing manipulation on the tendon and belly of quadriceps femoris muscle respectively, with the pressure of(350±50)g and the frequency of 5 s/time,15 min per session, once a day for 5 continuous days. After the 5th treatment, the tension of the rat quadriceps femoris muscle was evaluated using the modified Ashworth spasticity scale. The Gly levels in rat plasma and L1-L3 segments of spinal cord were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA).The GABA levels in rat plasma and L1-L3 segments of spinal cord were measured by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC).Results:The decrease in rat muscle tension scored by the modified Ashworth spasticity scale in the An-pressing tendon group was more significant than that in the An-pressing muscle belly group(P<0.01);the increases in Gly and GABA levels in the rat plasma and L1-L3Segments of spinal cord were more significant in the An-pressing tendon group than those in the An-pressing muscle belly group(all P<0.01). 展开更多
