Brock have proposed their transportation-imagery model of narrative persuasion. They argue that a narrative can evoke imagery in readers' mind and then transport readers into the narrative world the author has created, in the course of which the author can persuade readers of the beliefs he's put into the narrative. This paper employs this model to rethink how Arthur Conan Doyle persuades his readers of British imperialism in his "The Speckled Band". First, this model considers the vividness of the narrative and readers' participatory response as key factors in readers' transportation. The narratives of "The Speckled Band" are picturesque, and Sherlock Holmes' inferential process has reinforced readers' participatory response. On the other hand, detective fiction usually has the theme of how the detective/law and order beats the criminal/chaos. That is, Doyle persuades his readers that the British Empire will prevail in "The Speckled Band" when Holmes, representing the British imperialism, solves the case and kills Dr. Roylott, who represents the evil and savagery in the British colony. According to Green and Brock's model, it simply means that there are two narratives (i.e., one is about how the law of the British Empire is challenged, and the other is about how the British Empire's stability is restored), and two complementary transportations before Doyle can successfully persuades his readers. However, if we closely read "'The Speckled Band", we can learn that Holmes, who should have represented British law, is guilty of trespassing or taking the law into his own hands. In other words, the complementarity of the two transportations is compromised. Thus, we can conclude that it is highly questionable whether or not Doyle can transport his readers into the bosom of the British Empire.展开更多

Methods:A hundred patients with straightened cervical curvature were randomized into 5 groups to receive corresponding treatment. The clinical efficacies and the changes of cervical curvature in the five groups were compared. Results:Different therapies all produced certain effectiveness in treating cervical spondylosis patients. The total effective rates in the acupuncture group and tuina group were both 100%, and the rates in the traction group, oral medication group and Chinese medicinal application group were all lower than the rates in the acupuncture group and tuina group (P〈0.05). It was shown that the more significant the change of cervical curvature, the more significant the clinical efficacy. Conclusion:Correcting the straightened cervical curvature is a way to swiftly release pain brought by cervical spondylosis; the optimization of different therapies ensures the achievement of long-term effectiveness; acupuncture and tuina are both effective in restoring the cervical curvature.展开更多

Methods:Three levels of light, moderate and heavy pressing forces were determined according to the An-pressing forces of the clinical tuina physicians;the pressing time and frequency parameters were determined according to the literatures about An-pressing manipulation. The volunteers were stimulated by the homemade An-pressing manipulation stimulator on the right Xinshu (BL 15), and then the three-factor and three-level orthogonal tests were carried out according to the test sequence specified by the L9(34) orthogonal table, and the temperature before and after pressing was recorded by an infrared thermal imaging system to screen the best parameters for the thermal effect of the An-pressing manipulation, thus to determine the optimal pressing parameters. The optimal parameters were then used for both continuous and rhythmic An-pressing manipulations to stimulate the bilateral Xinshu (BL 15). The temperature changes after pressing and the duration of the thermal effect (temperature difference ≤0.5℃ on both sides) were recorded by the infrared thermal imaging system, to explore the differences in the thermal effects of different An-pressing manipulations. Results:Among the three factors of pressing force, time and frequency, the influences of different pressing forces on temperature were significantly different (F=32.843,P=0.030), and the influence of 2.5 kg pressing force was the most significant;the effects of different pressing time on temperature were significantly different (F=54.102,P=0.018), and the pressing time of 7.5 min was the most significant;the influences of different pressing frequencies on temperature were not statistically significant (F=2.181,P=0.314), though the influence of 10 times/min pressing frequency was the largest. The influences on temperature difference of the rhythmic and the continuous An-pressing manipulations were significantly different (P=0.031 on the left side andP=0.045 on the right side), but there was no statistical difference in the duration of the thermal effect (P=0.690). Conclusion:The An-pressing manipulation parameters that significantly affect the temperature difference are pressing force and time. The optimal combination of thermal effect parameters is pressing force of 2.5 kg, time of 7.5 min, and frequency of 10 times/min. The local thermal effect of the rhythmic An-pressing manipulation is significantly greater than of the continuous An-pressing manipulation.展开更多

Methods: By adopting a randomized controlled method, 80 eligible patients were randomized into an observation group of 41 cases and a control group of 39 cases. The control group was intervened by Jin's cervical three-needle acupuncture plus acupuncture at the vertigo-pain points and Fengchi (GB 20); the observation group was by Long's chiropractic tuina manipulations in addition to the treatment given to the control. For both groups, the intervention was given once a day, 7 sessions as a treatment course, with a 1-day interval after a course, for 2 courses in total. The therapeutic efficacy was evaluated after the first session and the second treatment course, at the 3-month and 6-month follow-ups. Results: After the first session, the recovery plus markedly effective rate of the observation group was significantly higher than that of the control group (P〈0.01); the rate was markedly higher in the observation group than that in the control group after 2 treatment courses (P〈0.01); at the 3-month follow-up, the relapse rate was 2.5% in the observation group versus 23.5% in the control, and the between-group difference was statistically insignificant (P〉0.05); the 6-month follow-up study showed that the relapse rate was 5.0% in the observation group versus 21.6% in the control group, and the between-group difference was statistically significant (P〈0.05); at the 6-month follow-up, the total relapse rate was 7.5% in the observation group versus 35.1% in the control group, and the inter-group difference was statistically significant (P〈O.01). Conclusion: The two treatment protocols are both effective in treating cervical vertigo. However, due to its more significant efficacy, more efficient action and lower relapse rate compared to acupuncture alone, acupuncture plus tuina can be regarded as a verified protocol for cervical vertigo.展开更多

文摘Objective:To observe the effect of An-pressing manipulation on biceps brachii with delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) in healthy male volunteers. Methods:A total of 30 male college student volunteers were randomly divided into a blank group,a model group and a treatment group,10 cases in each group.Subjects in the blank group did not receive any intervention;subjects in the model group received active weight-bearing eccentric exercise on the non-favored side of the upper limb to establish the models, while not receiving any treatment;subjects in the treatment group received both the same modeling and An-pressing manipulation treatment. The subjective rating of perceived exertion (RPE),subjective soreness sensation threshold and soreness grade were evaluated before modeling, immediately after modeling, and 24,48,72,96 and 120 h after modeling.Serum total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) was measured before modeling, immediately after modeling, and 24,48 and 72 h after modeling.Serum creatine kinase MM isoenzyme (CK-MM) was measured before modeling and 24,48 and 72 h after modeling. Results:At 24,48,72 and 120 h after treatment, the soreness grades of the treatment group were lower than those of the model group (all P〈0.05).The RPE scores of the treatment group were lower than those of the model group (all P〈0.05) immediately after modeling,at 24,48,72,96 and 120 h after modeling. The subjective soreness sensation threshold of the treatment group was higher than that of the model group immediately after modeling,at 24,48,72 and 96 h after modeling (all P〈0.05).Immediately after modeling,T-AOC value in the treatment group was higher than that in the model group and blank group (both P〈0.05).CK-MM of the treatment group was lower than that of the model group at 48 h and 72 h after modeling (P〈0.05).Conclusion:An-pressing manipulation shows a certain therapeutic effect on biceps brachii with DOMS by strengthening the body's antioxidant and anti-damage abilities, which can effectively reduce the pain and accelerate the recovery from fatigue damage.
文摘Objective: To observe the clinical efficacy and action mechanism of Jin's three-needle acupuncture plus Long's chiropractic tuina manipulations in treating cervical vertigo. However, due to its more significant efficacy, more efficient action and lower relapse rate compared to acupuncture alone, acupuncture plus tuina can be regarded as a verified protocol for cervical vertigo.
文摘Objective: To observe the effect of acupuncture and Chinese tuina manipulation therapy in treating knee osteoarthritis, and analyze the alteration of musculus quadriceps femoris strength. Methods: A total of 80 patients were randomly assigned to a treatment group receiving acupuncture combined Chinese tuina manipulation therapy (n=40) and a control group receiving Fenbid treatment (n=40), curative effective score, Lequene & Mery assessment tests, and isokinetic evaluation were recorded before and after the treatment course. Results: The total effective rate was 90.0 % in the treatment group and 87.5% in the control group, without a significant difference between the two groups. Lequene & Mery assessment tests had no significant change. Musculus quadriceps femoris isokinetic evaluation improved significantly after the treatment course in the two groups (/9〈0.05), and there was a significant difference between the two groups (P〈0.05). Conclusion: Acupuncture combined with tuina manipulation therapy and Fenbid treatment both can reduce knee pain and joint disability in the short term, though no improvement was shown in the severity of the disease. Acupuncture combined with tuina manipulation therapy is better than Fenbid in improving the strength, total work and explosive force of the musculus quadriceps femoris.
文摘Objective: To observe the effect of acupuncture plus LONG's manual manipulations on the functional improvement of the patients with lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion. Methods: 60 cases of the patients were randomly divided into a observation group and a control group, 30 cases in each group. The observation group was treated with acupuncture plus LONG's manual manipulations, and the control group was treated with single acupuncture.
