The effects of melt viscosity on the enrichment and separation of Si crystals from Al–Si melt during an electromagnetic solidification process were investigated. Both the enrichment efficiency and the separation were found to be strongly dependent on the melt viscosity. A high melt viscosity was beneficial to the enrichment of primary silicon, whereas a low melt viscosity facilitated the separation process. A new enrichment mechanism was proposed in order to clarify the influence of melt viscosity, and an improved process for achieving high-efficiency enrichment of Si crystals via control of the melt viscosity was also proposed. Additionally, the morphology of Si crystals was found to change from spheroidal to plate-like in shape owing to the difference in viscosities in different regions. 展开更多

Numerical simulation of enhanced fluid flow characteristics in a three-stage double-stirring extraction tank was conducted with the coupling of an Eulerian multiphase flow model and a Morsi-Alexander interphase drag force model. Results show that the addition of a stirring device into the settler can efficiently reduce the volume fraction of out-of-phase impurity in the outlet, and accelerate the settling separation of oil-water mixture. Such addition can also effectively break down the oil-water-wrapped liquid droplets coming from the mixer, inhibit reflux from the outlet, and improve the oil-water separation. The addition of a stirring device induces ignorable power consumption compared with that by the mixer, and can thus facilitate the commercialized promotion of this novel equipment. 展开更多

A resident time model is proposed to evaluate the performance of agitated extraction columns. In this model, the resident time of dispersed drops is simulated with the discrete phase modeling, where the continuous phase and the dispersed phase (drops) are described by the single-phase Navier-Stokes (turbulence) model and Lagrangian model, respectively. The interaction of dispersed phase and continuous phase is neglected for the low concentration of drop in the cases studied. The statistical parameters of drops (the average resident time and standard deviation) under different operation conditions are computed for four columns. The relation of the above statistical parameters with the performance of columns is discussed and the criterions for an optimal compartment are outlined. Our results indicate that the resident time model is useful to evaluate the performance and optimize the design of extraction columns. 展开更多

Oil-water separation is critical to solvent extraction process of rare earth, which can directly affect the yield and quality of the product. The experiments measure the two-phase separation time in a beaker, mixing uniformity of two phases in the mixer and the oil phase entrainment at oil exit by the Karl Fischer method and numerical simulation for the mixersettler to study the combined effect of gravity and stirring. Experimental results show that relative to the static situation, the separation efficiency resulted from low-speed stirring is increased by 25%. The water content in the oil is a minimum at an offset distance L of 10 cm and the clearance off the tank bottom z of 10 cm is as low as 0.49%. Distribution images of oilwater separation at 2 s indicates that stirring is very conducive to the separation of the oil-water phase. 展开更多

The flow field of liquid phase (water) of agitated extraction columns is simulated with the help of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Four kinds of Reynolds-averaged turbulence models, i.e. the standard k-ε model, the RNG (renormalization group) k-s model, the realizable k-ε model and the Reynolds stress model, are compared in detail in order to judge which is the best model in terms of the accuracy, less CPU time and memory required. The performance of the realizable k-s model is obviously improved by reducing the model constant from C2 = 1.90 to C2 = 1.61. It is concluded that the improved realizable k-e model is the optimal model. 展开更多
