Exposure to NaC1 (150 mmol L^-1) decreased growth, leaf chlorophyll content, and photosynthetic rate of Jerusalem artichoke seedlings. NaC1 treatment showed 59% and 37% higher lipid peroxidation and electrolyte leakage, respectively, than the control. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) were decreased by NaCl, indicating an impeded antioxidant defense mechanism of Jerusalem artichoke grown under salt stress. Addition of 10 mmol L^-1 CaCl2 to the salt solutions significantly decreased the damaging effect of NaC1 on growth and chlorophyll content and simultaneously restored the rate of photosynthesis almost to the level of the control. Ca^2+ addition decreased the leaf malondialdehyde (MDA) content and electrolyte leakage from NaCl-treated seedlings by 47% and 24%, respectively, and significantly improved the activities of SOD, POD, and CAT in NaCl-treated plants. Addition of EGTA, a specific chelator of Ca2+, decreased the growth, chlorophyll content, and photosynthesis, and increased level of MDA and electrolyte leakage from NaCl-treated plants and from the control plants. EGTA addition to the growth medium also repressed the activities of SOD, POD, and CAT in NaCl-treated and control seedlings. External Ca2+ might protect Jerusalem artichoke against NaC1 stress by up-regulating the activities of antioxidant enzymes and thereby decreasing the oxidative stress.展开更多

Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) grown in a field experiment was irrigated with seawater diluted with freshwater from 2001 to 2003 to determine the feasibility of seawater irrigation in the Laizhou area. For treatments of CK (non-irrigation) along with seawater concentrations of 25%, 50%, and 75%, total dissolved solid (TDS) in the non-irrigated soil significantly increased (P ≤ 0.05) in both 2002 and 2003 and was 1.3 times higher in 2003 than in 2001. In the 25% and 50% seawater concentration treatments, TDS in 2001 was significantly greater (P ≤ 0.05) than CK; however, TDS in these two treatments decreased by 34.9% and 40.1%, respectively, in 2003 compared with 2001. The sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) remained below 10 mmol^1/2 L^-1/2, indicating that alkalization was low with seawater irrigation. In 2001 and 2002, compared to CK and the irrigation treatment with 75% seawater, irrigation with 25% and 50% seawater increased the yields of Jerusalem .artichoke. This meant that Jerusalem artichoke could be safely grown in salt-affected land of Laizhou area with 25% and 50% seawater irrigation.展开更多

It explores how visual and formal structural components in the image function in this photograph and how they contribute to the process of creating an icon. It explores the mechanisms that exist in visual icons and addresses the question of why some press photographs turn into iconic images while other do not, and if there is a connection between the visual structural elements in the images and the way they are perceived by the public. The study discusses how this visual logic correlates with other elements such as public opinion and myths.展开更多

The Rapid development of Christian buildings started from 1840 due to the entry of foreign missionaries. Various types of Christian buildings rose up in the province, were constructed by local builder, but designed and funded by foreign missionaries. In comparison to other Christian buildings, churches have unique historical value, cultural value and also special meaning in architecture art. However, their cultural heritage value has not yet been sufficiently considered. They are facing the prospect of being damaged and demolished, even in nowadays. It is incumbent that their architecture to be historically evaluated and that ways to be found to preserve them. In this paper, the author will focus on the neoteric Christian churches and illustrate the architecture by taking examples from the churches in Shaanxi, along with the intention to clarify the relationship between social background and the history of evolution of these churches. In addition, the authors have taken the chance to understand more comprehensively about the fascinating history of these Christian churches by way of field surveys and taping into archival documents.展开更多

It is centered on the site where the Order of the Temple was created, Jerusalem, and also on the Templar European headquarters, Paris, in Marais neighborhood; as well as on its headquarters in Portugal, Tomar; and finally, on Angra which was set up in Azores at the beginning of the Portuguese discoveries in 1427. While exploring possible Templar principles on setting up medieval geometric cities, the aim of this paper is to expose that Tomar is a truly relevant case on that process and, therefore, that Portugal have had a significant role on medieval geometric urbanism. The achievements of this paper show that the selected territories share common settlement principles which are based on both similar geometric rules and analogous hierarchy schemes. Regarding that, it will be possible to state that cultural and population exchanges with France should not be considered as the sole factor to shape European medieval urbanity. Portugal should have had a role on that process, too. At least, it should be possible to explore other hypothesis on further pieces of research, according to the exposed arguments.展开更多

In his article, Said raises various issues regarding Jerusalem and the Palestinian-Israeli peace process. The article depicts Israel's policy of Judaizing Jerusalem and its attempts to make Jerusalem its eternal capital. Said tries to expose the Israeli meretricious strategies regarding Jerusalem which begin by projecting an image of what it wants the world to believe and then translating that false image into reality. Said also underscores the fact that both Palestinians and the pan-Arab nation have failed to counteract the Israeli policy of selling to the world the notion of Jerusalem belonging exclusively to Israel, a failure that has enabled Israel to tighten its grip on the Holy City and to curb the Palestinians', the Arabs' and the Muslims' attempts to counterattack on the level of media information. In Said's view, the only hope for the future is a decent and fair coexistence between the two peoples based upon equality and self-determination. For him, the separation between the Palestinians and the Israelis since 1948 has not led to successful outcomes; a one state---rather than a binational-state solution is, therefore, the more possible way of resolving the Arab-Israeli conflict.展开更多

This paper argues that the novelist Jonathan Littell's critically acclaimed best-seller The Kindly Ones (2010) provocatively revalorizes and builds upon these two aspects of Arendt's study: Firstly, it posits her theory of banality as a challenge to the comforting presupposition that terrible evils can only be committed by a minority of monstrous individuals, by suggesting instead that "normal" readers share the same capacity to commit atrocities as Nazis such as Eichmann. Secondly, the novel nuances Arendt's damning indictment of Jewish collaboration by regarding it as the inevitable consequence of the terrible predicament faced by Jews at that time. Finally, the paper concludes with Littell's consideration of banality as a phenomenon that not only invites an uncomfortable moral self-analysis, but also legitimises a return to a justice system based on the ancient Greek model.展开更多

Following the first exodus in 1948, they continued to migrate out of compulsion or for practical reasons. This paper clarifies the contemporary situation and perceptions of migration among the Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem. Given the influence of regulations, this study situates those areas as part of the Israeli democratic system. Based on an original poll survey conducted in the summer of 2011, the analysis attempts to explain the relationship between migration and citizenship. People's migration is analyzed in relation to their different statuses as citizens. The variants of the statuses are considered to be a result of the system of stratified citizenship, and it is characterized as a component of the democratic system of Israel.展开更多
