They have four stories and many rooms, and the dwellers are all small traders. Because these projects are built with funds from the government, the buildings are designed to consider the cost of construction, without consideration of embodied energy material. As a result, the buildings are not optimal in terms of embodied energy and construction cost. At present, because there are both concerns over global warning and a worldwide energy crisis, the embodied energy in a building is a very important concept for building design, because it can determine usage of energy in relation to natural sources, especially fossil fuels. This is part of the sustainable design concept. This paper describes research regarding: differences in embodied energy and construction cost between different wall materials, including brick, corn block and lightweight concrete in low rise apartments; the optimal relationship between embodied energy and building cost; and which factors determine these differences. The findings of this research show that lightweight concrete is the best material for the building walls; apartments for low-income in Surabaya still do not represent optimal construction design; and that sustainable buildings are cheaper than those that do not use this concept.展开更多

Thrasymacus sees it as the interest of the stronger party; while the Institute for Creation Research sees it as being legal and ethical, restorative and penal with regards to human rights. Political, legal, religious, social etc., are forms of justice but in this work, the authors are concerned with economic justice. First, the authors say that the Nigerian society is in disorder as a result of entrenched economic injustice partly inspired by its multi-ethnicity and multi-religiousity. The authors therefore, investigate what constitutes economic justice in a nation like Nigeria: Is it equitable distribution of national wealth to individuals, groups, and regions? Or, is it the distribution of national wealth proportionate to the contributions of individuals, groups, and regions to the national treasury, or still the distribution of national wealth according to political power blocs which fall within regional and ethnic lines? The aim of this paper is to establish that no matter which definition one adopts, there have been some regions in Nigeria namely Niger Delta or the South-South and southeast regions which account for over 80% of national income in oil revenue but which continue to experience sustained economic injustice in the distribution of national wealth, federal projects, basic amenities etc., since the end of the civil war in 1970. In the societal strata, the wage earners are at the receiving end of government's unjust taxation system which enables the high net-worth individuals to pay less and most times evade taxation on their stupendous income. In another scenario, poor citizens are unjustly treated in the sharing of national wealth when compared with the wealthy class for example; they live in areas lacking in basic amenities; they are deprived access to loans to finance their businesses, agricultural project, and other crafts by the premium placed on collateral policies. We therefore conclude that the Nigerian society is lopsided as a result of massive economic injustices in Nigeria at the individual, group, and regional levels. In sum, the authors revisit philosophy's role at addressing such societal disorder orchestrated by various economic injustices perpetrated in Nigeria.展开更多

In Ghana, crops such as pineapples and mangoes appear promising because of their high labour intensity and expanding demand for fruits in Europe. Notwithstanding, there is a possible trade-off between export and food crop production because of the possibility of resource re-allocation. So far the major concern of government has been the growth in export earnings while the micro-level distributional effects remain under-investigated. The study focused on a household survey undertaken in the forest and coastal-savannah transition zones, where the farming system has undergone transition from an established food-crop farming for urban markets to an intensive production of horticultural products for export. Logistic regression and Gini coefficient approaches were used to estimate the determinants of household food availability and income distribution respectively. Though, households engaged in export horticulture appear better-off than those that do not, the sole adoption of either staple or export crop is not sufficient for improving food availability. Consequently, linkages which allow simultaneous and reliably access to equitable distribution of resources and services are critical for household survival in competitive global food markets展开更多

However, redevelopment directly or indirectly leads to displacement of low-income residents. The new residents would be of a higher socio-economic status than the previous occupants. For controlling this phenomenon, a study about the influence of displacement to the successful of sustainable multi-storey housing development for low-income society has been done with descriptive method, observation and literature study. The result of this study give knowledge that displacement always happened when the quality of building and environment is increase, the location of multi-storey housing is near city center and commercial area. Low income society voluntary displaced their units to middle or high income society, because they are not affordable for paying operational and maintenance costs. The government has to make regulations for controlling displacement on multi-storey housing for low-income society and for the successful of sustainable multi-storey housing development in urban area.展开更多

The key to designing the tiered system is how to estimate the amount of electricity use for each tier, so as to avoid excluding low income groups from the subsidy or including high income groups in the subsidy.展开更多

The results show that workers with high educational levels and those with low educational levels occupy different segments of the labor market and have completely different paths to economic status acquisition. In the case of workers with a low educational level, job mobility is the most Jmpo^ant factor boosting income levels, while human capital variables (years of schooling and work experience) have no effect on income. By contrast, job mobility has no effect on the income of workers with a high educational level, whose income stratification Js most affected by their human capital. This research reveals the two-track model of urban workers' acquisition of economic status in different urban labor markets in transitional China.展开更多
