A method of ultra-attenuation to enhance the radiative characteristics of the medium is proposed. It is proved that decreasing the particle size of coatings can increase the transmission depth of radiative heat and get higher emissivity and absorptivity both theoretically and practically. Ultra-attenuation and nanocrystallization will bring a brilliant prospect to the development of radiative coatings.展开更多

Here, we correlate experiments with modeling and verify experimentally the predicted absorption of light in InP nanowire arrays for varying nanowire diameter and length. We find that 2,000 nm long nanowires in a pitch of 400 nm can absorb 94% of the incident light with energy above the band gap and, as a consequence, light which in a simple ray-optics description would be travelling between the nanowires can be efficiently absorbed by the nanowires. Our measurements demonstrate that the absorption for long nanowires is limited by insertion reflection losses when light is coupled from the air top-region into the array. These reflection losses can be reduced by introducing a smaller diameter to the nanowire-part closest to the air top-region. For nanowire arrays with such a nanowire morphology modulation, we find that the absorptance increases monotonously with increasing diameter of the rest of the nanowire.展开更多

The strategy to achieve a high utilization of active materials with high energy efficiency is strongly requested for practical applications with less energy loss during repeated cycling. In this contribution, a metal/nanocarbon layer current collector is proposed to enhance the redox reactions of polysulfides in a working Li-S cell. Such a concept is demon- strated by coating graphene-carbon nanotube hybrids (GNHs) on routine aluminum (AI) foil current collectors. The interracial conductivity and adhesion between the current collector and active material are significantly enhanced. Such novel cell configuration with metal/nanocarbon layer current collectors affords abundant Li ions for rapid redox reactions with small overpotential. Consequently, the Li-S cells with nanostructured current collectors exhibit an initial discharge capacity of 1,113 mAh g-1 at 0.5 C, which is -300 mAh g-1 higher than those without a GNH coating layer. The capacity retention is 73% for cells with GNH after 300 cycles. A reduced voltage hysteresis and a high energy efficiency of ca. 90% are therefore achieved. Moreover, the AI/GNH layer current collectors are easily implanted into current cell assembly process for energy storage devices based on complex multi-electron redox reactions (e.g., Li-S batteries, Li-O2 batteries, fuel cells, and flow batteries).展开更多

While room temperature ionic liquids (RTIL) are often used as the charge carrier in these new applications, the theoretical analyses are mostly based on conventional electrokinetic theories suitable for macroscopic electrochemical phenomena in aqueous solutions. In this work, we study the charging behavior of RTIL-EDLs using a coarse-grained molecular model and constant-potential molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. In stark contrast to the predictions of conventional theories, the MD results show oscillatory variations of ionic distributions and electrochemical properties in response to the separation between electrodes. The rate of EDL charging exhibits non-monotonic behavior revealing strong electrostatic correlations in RTIL under confinement.展开更多
