Unjust Decision Making Resulting in Marginalization of the Powerless Prostitution Community in Silir-Semanggi of Solo

The city government of Solo has made a decision that street vendors operating in the city's Revolution Monument in Banjarsari Square for years must be relocated to the new built traditional market, called Pasar Notoharjo. This study utilized ethnographic methods, a combination of methods including observation, in-depth interview, focus group and the unobtrusive method including collecting written information. The study showed that the decision of Solo city government which tended to privilege street vendors' interests resulted in the life chance of prostitution was deteriorated and marginalized. The city government has accommodated street vendors' demand to remove ,the organized prostitution community operating in Silir-Semanggi of Solo since 1960s as one of requirements for their relocation to this area, where the new built traditional market with more than one thousand kiosks was provided for street vendors. The procuresses' demand to obtain their rights of the land they occupied for more than 20 years on behalf of their legal ownership failed due to administrative, bureaucratic and legal obstacles. Prostitutes were inhumanly chased away by the city government apparatuses in collaboration with the police from the site of operation in 2006 and it resulted that the social and economic lives of procuresses and prostitutes got worse since their prostitution activities in this location were totally forbidden and unfinished. Both procuresses and prostitutes were marginalized because they did not have links to the powerful stakeholder who were able to protect their rights. Their health was in danger because the city government's concern to their activities was limited in particularly since 1998 when the location was formally closed by Solo mayor of the new order. 展开更多

The idea that studies about education for engineers should be complemented with micro-politics analysis which is presented in this article. For such, we present a framework to conceptualizing micropolitics and some elements that show how the micro- and macro-politics are overlapped in any political fact. From this premise, the micro-politics is used to lift some elements of analysis of a particular case of engineering educational process in Brazil, where several dominant behaviors are characterized as violent or repressive behaviors that do not favor the development of technical inventivity, one of fundamental characteristics of the profession. What is argued here is that these behaviors are part of the range of a dominant subjectivity that has as its goal the maintenance of professional subjectivity not to develop in students a critical subjectivity, which must be produced under teaching techniques and pedagogical approaches. To consolidate the micro-politics analysis perspective are cited several statements used in Brazilian engineering education process, which diverts attention from the real reasons for failures in the engineers" education. Finally, a report of physics violence inside a Brazilian public institution is cited to illustrate how the coercive institutional power operates in the production of students' subjectivity. 展开更多

Money demand of Korean economy was estimated. Cointegration test with time dummy variables results show that there is not only long-run equilibrium relationship between money demand and macroeconomic variables, but also structural breaks in this equilibrium relationships. Least squares, state-space, and Marcov switching methods show that there also has been instability (or regime shifts) of parameters in money demand, especially over 1997 crisis and the early 2000s. This fact implies that monetary policy for stabilization might encounter big problems due to change (instability) of money demand. 展开更多

This paper examines Chinese popular affection for Germany through the lens of soft power. I contend that for the three sources of soft power-domestic values, foreign policy legitimacy, and culture, Germany provides something positive for China. Germany's popularity is largely due to Beijing's habitual construction of Germany as an ideal "other." Mainstream scholarship on soft power tends to focus on culture. This paper highlights values and foreign policy, showing that only when a country has trouble-free perceptions in these areas, will its cultural popularity be more pronounced and enduring.
