Reflections on Non-English Major Postgraduate English Teaching Reform

This paper presents some reflections on non-English major postgraduate English teaching reform. The author points out some understandings on the English proficiency of non-English major postgraduate students and curriculum changes in the reform. The author thinks that postgraduate English teaching reform is a systematic project, with a goal to meet the practical needs of postgraduate students and improve their ability to use English in their study and work. Hence, every effort of the reform should be made to satisfy the practical needs of the students and to make their English study contribute to their achievements in their own subject area.

Development of School Methodology for Field Study of a Botanical Pineland

The major importance of forests is critical to the survival on planet Earth. Forests are threatened by a lot of dangers and all of us have to contribute to the fight for their survival. The methodology of school research on pine woods which is described below, aims to cultivate more sensitive, educated and activated students, by accordingly specialized teachers who are going to organize the educational background, also to decide techniques and materials for the easiest and most effective learning, for the cultivation of values, attitudes and friendly behaviors towards forests. The suggested methodology is based on the findings of a European Comenius Program and two Programs of Environmental Education. The research usually takes place in a pine land, by using a worksheet as experimental tool, and focuses on the vitality of the trees, the biodiversity, the effects of pollution and other cultural elements related to the pine bio-community. There is also a lot of informative discussion and research over cultural, social and economical factors with locals and specialists.

Teacher＇s role in teaching English for Medical Purposes （EMP）

This paper has addressed key notions about ESP and examined issues in ESP curriculum design. The content of the paper was determined by a need identified based on author＇s professional experience as an EMP instructor designing and delivering the content-based language lessons--language preparation for Doctoral Degree Applicants in medicine. The author believes that in English class teachers should adopt a student-centered approach, have some knowledge of the special subjects and choose appropriate materials that fit all medical students. This approach has achieved satisfactory result in helping students know about the latest breakthroughs in biomedical fields, communicate with colleagues of other countries and contribute to foreign medical journals.

Interprofessional education in nursing: The impact of collaboration between physical and mental health care professionals

Objectives:lnterprofessional collaboration in the training of nursing and psychology students helps provide students of both disciplines with the ability and competences they need to best attend to their patients.This study implemented and analyzed a method for developing the competences of each discipline in a scenario of joint clinical simulation that incorporates mental and physical health simultaneously,and measured the caring ability of the participating students.Methods:Participants took a self-applied survey measuring their own caring ability.After,a clinical simulation was performed where nursing students performed clinical interviews on psychology students,who acted as standardized patients.Caring abilities were measured in the nursing students,and the psychology students implemented an intervention service measuring caring ability and brief-debrief simulation by coaching to nursing students.Results:The results indicated that the self-applied questionnaire of caring ability resulted in scores significantly higher than what was measured by observers.Conclusions:The results contribute to the development of protocols,training and collaborative work practices in interprofessional education,which allow the scaling of these competences.

This article will review the explicit grammar instruction and implicit grammar teaching research, collect and analyze the integration of explicit grammar instruction and implicit grammar teaching strategy and its advantages in the grammar teaching.

Art and design specialty in university teaching will face significant new reforms. This article makes the present situation of effective art and design specialty＇ s teaching in our country and makes deep analysis on how to strengthen the art and design specialty teaching in our higher schools.

Attitude, Secondary Schools and Student Success in a Tertiary Mathematics Unit

There is a consensus in the literature that mathematical ability contributes to student success in tertiary education. More importantly, mathematical skills are necessary when successfully completing mathematics- and/or science-based degrees. Social sciences such as psychology and economics require statistical skills which also require knowledge of mathematics. Even business students, such as marketing and accounting students need the necessary mathematical skills to successfully complete their degrees at university. This paper suggests that student success in a core business subject is dependent on their mathematical aptitude, attitude, and type of secondary schooling whether government or non-government schools. There is urgency for universities to recognize that high failure rates are due to insufficient mathematics exposure in secondary schooling and remedial classes might not be enough. Specifying a minimum （maths, e.g., two units） requirement for entry and/or providing bridging programs to ensure students have the necessary basic mathematical skills would increase student success in quantitative units.

The present paper probes into the feasibility of flipped classroom teaching model in writing for non-English majors The flipped classroom teaching model changes the teaching structure in the traditional classrooms. It puts students at the center of study in the whole study process, gives more autonomy to students both in class and outside of class, and involves students in the cooperation and interaction with their peers or the teacher. The process of writing teaching in the flipped classrooms via ICLASS is designed in the present paper and hopefully it will help non-English major students to improve their overall proficiency in writing.

Improving Non-English major students＇ autonomous learning is a focus for the teachers in the high vocational and technical college. The research reports an empirical study on the relationship between metacognitive strategies and English autonomous learning. Finally, the teaching experiment was proved to be feasible and valid.

The Development of Mathematical Modelling Activities from Thematic Projects in the Social-Critical Perspective

In this paper, the authors present a modelling activity developed from a thematic project in the models and mathematical modelling class of the professional master＇s degree program in mathematics education at the Federal University of Ouro Preto. The students enrolled in the class chose to study the theme Brazilian Public Politics. After several debates regarding the theme, the students were separated into three groups and each group chose a subtheme to study. The themes were IDH （index of human development）, minimum wage and social security. As an example, a description of the thematic project about the minimum wage in Brazil is presented. The principal results obtained in the study of this theme include a discussion about the potentialities of the theme as a classroom activity in different levels of schooling. As an educational activity, the thematic project demonstrated itself to be greatly relevant, since not only did it provide the learning possibility of mathematics related to the issues studied, but also promoted various discussions regarding the theme, which, in our conception, contributes to the social-critical development of the students. Finally, from the point of view of applied mathematics and mathematics education, the development of a modelling activity from thematic projects showed itself to be a good source of researches.

Analysis into Chinese Students＇ Misuse of English Verbs -- From the aspect of Chinese interference

In the course of college English teaching, English teachers may find some errors made by the non-English majors. Errors made when they are using English verbs are analyzed from the aspect of the similarities and differences between English verbs and Chinese verbs in this thesis. We can conclude that the most obvious cause of the misuse seems to be the interference of the first language （L1）, that is, interlingual errors affect the English output of Chinese students. At last, the author calls for more input of the difference between L1 and L2 in L2 teaching and acquisition so that the same mistakes can be avoided.

An Investigation Into Freshmen＇s Autonomous Learning of English Major

Autonomous learning has been attracting more and more attention in the field of second language teaching and learning since it was put forward. In order to get a better understanding about autonomous learning competence of freshmen of English major in university, this investigation was conducted in the form of questionnaire and was analyzed according to the data collected. The investigation found that autonomous learning competence of freshmen is poor and worrying. Freshmen have strong motivation for English learning, but they keep old learning habit and more rely on teachers. They are incapable of employing metacognitive strategies in their language learning and are not good at utilizing related learning resources available to them. All these deficiencies hinder improvement of them. So they are in great need of fostering the competence of automous learning.

UNDERSTANDING PCK:ITS BACKGROUND,COMPONENTS AND MODELS——A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW ON PCK IN THE PAST TWO DECADES

The study of Pedagogical Content Knowledge(PCK),has been closely connected with three research paradigms(teacher behaviours,teacher thinking and teacher knowledge) over past decades.This paper first reviews several diagrams of PCK's components and various models proposed by Shulman(1986,1987),Grossman(1990,1995),Turner-Bisset(1999,2001).Then it conceptualizes a framework of six-component PCK on the basis of analytical discussion being conducted in the study.Since PCK reflects an integration of several fundamental elements of teacher knowledge held by expert teachers,it should serve as one of the knowledge bases for developing foreign language teacher education programmes.

A STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF THE PROCESS-ORIENTED APPROACH ON THE EFL WRITING PROFICIENCY OF CHINESE NON-ENGLISH MAJORS

This study was designed to study the effects of the process-oriented approach on the EFL writing proficiency of Chinese non-English majors.In this study,two research designs were employed:the quantitative design and the qualitative design.In the quantitative design,two classes participated in an 8-week experiment.An interview was employed in the qualitative design to find out students' attitude towards process-oriented approach.The result of the study showed that students generally held positive attitudes towards this approach and it was more effective in improving students' EFL writing proficiency and could thus be adjusted to teach writing.

Development and challenges of professional Master of pharmacy education in China

In the present work,we aimed to describe the current situation and developing trend of professional Master of pharmacy education in China.Systematic searches of websites for literatures related to the specialty of professional Master of pharmacy were conducted.E-mail or telephone inquires were made directly to 108 pharmacy institutions(schools and universities)in China offering the MPharm program.The MPharm program was established in China in 2010,which primarily focuses on cultivating professionals in fields,such as drug technology transformation,inspection and regulation of drugs,registration and distribution of drugs,and pharmaceutical services.After 9 years of development,it has almost completed the overall design of its higher education paradigm with Chinese characteristics.With the rapid development of the pharmaceutical industry in China,the professional degree of pharmacy education program at the master’s level is insufficient to meet social and market demand for qualified professionals.Therefore,doctoral-level programs are now being promoted.
