The Language Policy for Higher Education (2002) and University of Cape Town's Language Plan (2001) suggest that language is central to our social and academic engagement at every level: to our communication with those around us, to our learning, and to our identities. The purpose of this paper is to show how the medical school, after making progress towards implementing the University of Cape Town's Language Plan of 2001, is compelled to encourage isiXhosa language developers to develop the necessary and relevant vocabulary responding to the needs of the target users. In some cases, there is a need to adopt terms that are already available and being used by the speech community to align them in the curriculum. Research conducted by analyzing field notes, having plenary discussions with students, observations during clinical practice, reflecting on the curriculum and study materials material. Results indicated the significance of teaching isiXhosa drawing from the medical jargon understood amongst patients, doctors, and nurses. This paper discusses the status enjoyed by isiXhosa to date, language teaching and teaching matters pertaining to isiXhosa, and reflection on whether there is benefit in learning isiXhosa. 展开更多

A study of Igbo language and identity is pertinent because language and culture are attached to man's identity and human interaction Unfortunately, most of the Igbos do not want to be identified with this language called Igbo. The paper reviewed available literature on Igbo language and highlighted some strategies for increasing the interest of people in learning Igbo language. It was discovered from the study that pedagogical problems, tone problems, orthography and diacritic problems, are some of the issues that inhibit the repositioning of Igbo language as lgbo man's identity In view of this, it was recommended among others that Igbo linguist should try and document all the slight phonological and word differences existing in the dialects and absorb them in central Igbo 展开更多

Under this background, how to apply the concept of new curriculum reform guide the reform of college English teaching is an important task. Therefore, it is very important to study the teaching strategies of college English teaching. Culture and language are complementary and inseparable, which requires us to carry out cultural teaching during English teaching process. In this paper, we focus on the strategy of integrating enterprise cultures into college English teaching, and discuss several cultural teaching problems in college English class. As a language required course, English not only strengthen the learners’ language skills, but also enhance humanistic quality of students. However, current college English teaching takes the examination as the goal, which cannot meet the needs of the learner’s professional stuff. Interaction is an important standard to detect teachers' teaching quality and effect in college English classroom teaching and is the most eagerly expected by all English teachers. During the process of classroom teaching, bad interaction or failure of interaction often makes teachers frustrated. One of the major reasons is that they ask improper questions in class. The purpose of this paper focuses on the skills of raising effective questions by teachers in order to produce good interaction from students. The method to achieve this purpose is by introducing Socratic Questioning method, which is showed by teachers' narrative research based on the author's own real classroom teaching with detailed explanation. The result of the experiment shows that Socratic Questioning method is not only a good example of effective questioning but also produces sufficient interaction between teacher-to-students and students-to-students. Generally speaking, this paper expects to have contribution to the effect of interaction so as to help more college English teachers have more excellent classroom teaching. 展开更多

This impels opportunities for authentic, inquiry based learning. PBL (problem based learning) is a student centered pedagogy in which students learn about a subject through the experience of problem solving. The goals of PBL are to help the students develop flexible knowledge, effective problem solving skills, self-directed learning, effective collaborative skills and intrinsic motivation. CAPBL (computer assisted problem based learning) has been created to expand the boundaries of the creativity and the creativity of students beyond the four walls of the classroom. In the present study the investigator tested the effectiveness of the CAPBL material in Chemistry for enhancing thinking skills among secondary school students. The sample consisted of 100 secondary school students. The study revealed that the CAPBL material in Chemistry is effective in enhancing thinking skills such as critical thinking, creativity and problem solving. 展开更多

In order to get a better understanding about autonomous learning competence of freshmen of English major in university, this investigation was conducted in the form of questionnaire and was analyzed according to the data collected. The investigation found that autonomous learning competence of freshmen is poor and worrying. Freshmen have strong motivation for English learning, but they keep old learning habit and more rely on teachers. They are incapable of employing metacognitive strategies in their language learning and are not good at utilizing related learning resources available to them. All these deficiencies hinder improvement of them. So they are in great need of fostering the competence of automous learning. 展开更多

How to Teach Academic Reading More Effectively: Reading-Aloud Approach

In furtherance of their most recent research on the textbook of the course LC (language and communication) 4001 Reading Skills Development in English for Graduate Studies (2012), the co-authors carried out a follow-up work on read-aloud approach as some students voiced a sense of dissatisfaction with regard to such means which was primarily used in the LC 4001 class taking place from August 8 to November 27, 2012. In the current study, the data were garnered from 37 students enrolling in LC 4001 from January 8 to May 7, 2013. Based on the questionnaire, the findings revealed that a large number of the English reading learners acknowledged the mounting importance of English as a linguafranca in the region of 84% and 16% at the "most" and "much" levels, respectively. Likewise, around 90% of the participants had a positive attitude toward such pedagogical method, while only 10% disliked it. Concerning the academic reading curriculum for higher English reading competence, students' different language learning backgrounds and personal excitement caused by reading-aloud activities should be taken on board. Any activity introduced into the classroom should be explicitly stated to the students at the beginning of the course. Using any instructional approach without clear explanations or precautions may seriously upset learners partially or even completely obstruct their effective learning 展开更多

The aim of the study is to make an through investigation of Chinese non-English majors' learning styles and their learning strategies in English study, and to analyze the impact of learning styles on learning strategy preferences statistically so as to provide empirical evidence in this field, and then present some implications for college English teaching and learning in Chinese context. This study has significance for pedagogy. Teachers should make language learners aware of their own learning styles and strategy preferences and help them select strategies matching their own style preferences in second language learning.
