On the relationship between college English teachers＇ beliefs and their teaching behaviors

Based on the questionnaires and interviews on 19 college English teachers of a university in Beijing, the paper discusses college English teachers＇ beliefs. Through the analysis of research results, the paper focuses on the following questions： （1） What are the core beliefs of college English teachers？ （2） What influence will the teachers＇ beliefs exert on teaching behaviors？ （3） Will the teachers＇ beliefs change？ If the answer is YES, how will they change and what is the source of the changes？ The exploratory results and findings can help college English teachers realize the importance of teachers＇ beliefs, through which can help them improve their teaching practices and foster their professional development.

English Teachers’ Beliefs About Multilingual Awareness in L3 Learning and Their Teaching Practice in Chinese EFL Context

Teachers’ beliefs toward multilingual awareness in target language learning play a significant role in shaping learners’ attitudes to language awareness, affect learners’ linguistic behavior and teachers’ teaching practice. Therefore, the present study was aimed to explore English teachers’ beliefs about Inner Mongolian university students’ multilingual awareness in L3 learning and their teaching practice in Chinese EFL context. One hundred English teachers from six universities in Inner Mongolia, China, participated in this investigation. The data was collected through a questionnaire and teacher interviews. The results indicate that English teachers hold positive attitudes to multilingual awareness in general;however, there are belief differences between Mongolian and Han teachers;there exist discrepancies between English teachers’ beliefs about multilingual awareness and their teaching practice, and social-cultural environment, family language policy,teacher identity, learning experience, teaching materials, and, more importantly, teachers’ lack of awareness of fostering learners’ multilingual awareness lead to the discrepancies. The present research highlights the necessity of raising teacher awareness of cultivating multilingual awareness in future teacher development and emphasizes the significance of exploring the potential cognitive advantages of multilingualism in promoting L3 learning and developing English learners’ multilingual competence in the EFL context in China.

Grammar Teaching Beliefs of a Pre-service Teacher： A Repertory Grid Analysis

Pre-service teachers＇ belief is a popular research topic in educational pedagogy. It is important to examine inexperienced teachers＇ beliefs related to the profession of teaching since they will continue pursuing these beliefs while carrying out their profession. These beliefs will affect their future teaching practices, professional judgments and ideas （Roberts, 2001; Borg, 2003）. This study aimed to investigate the personal theories of one pre-service teacher from an ELT （English Language Teaching） certificate program at a foundation university in Istanbul. Her beliefs about effective grammar teaching were represented by using repertory grid data. This qualitative case study report displayed the participant pre-service teachers＇ thinking through cycles of constructing and reconstructing her personal theories about grammar teaching. The findings of the study were discussed and some educational implications were suggested.

How to Let the Students Communicate in the Classroom

the teacher themselves. The teacher are too fastidious and stringent which will make the class become a battlefield. Everyone is afraid of speaking during the class. And furthermore, the way which the teacher uses to communicate with student is not suitable. As a common sense, communication is art art, so we should choose the right way to communicate with the child. Furthermore, we need to put more focus on the communication way of teachers, and find out how to let the students communicate in the class. In this short essay, I try to propose some measures to the teacher on this topic of communication in the class.

Malaysian Teacher Trainees＇ Competencies of Accessing, Evaluating, and Applying Information Ethically in Research Process

The case study attempts to discover with certainty the competency of accessing, evaluating and applying information in research process acquired by undergraduate trainees of Malaysian Teacher Education Institute in the northern region of Peninsula Malaysia. Considered as highly important skills that trainee teachers have to acquire a comprehensive understanding of information literacy to pursue a research. Yet, it is a pivotal fact indicated by recent researchers that most future teachers often enter teaching without the necessary information literacy skills and knowledge in research process. The scope of study is based on full-time final year undergraduate trainee teachers for the Educational Degree Programme doing their school based action research in the states of Kedah, Perlis, and Penang. The study analyzes problems and issues faced by these trainee teachers tied up to information literacy competency in doing research process. The study investigates trainees＇ competencies of accessing, evaluating, and applying information ethically in their research process. The findings hope to give insights to stake holders on the ways to move forward in terms of needs, process and outcomes in accordance with the Malaysian National Information Literacy Agenda.

Handling the EFL Students＇ Crisis of Self-confidence to Ask Questions

It is no wonder that inquiring is an important skill. This paper deals with a research which was intended to see if respect and encouragement could solve the problem of students＇ self-confidence to inquire in the EFL （English as a Foreign Language） classroom. The research involved a secondary group of students whose self-confidence to ask questions was considered low by the teacher and research collaborators. The data were collected through observation, questionnaire and interview. Based on a pre-observation, problem sources had been identified, i.e., the students were afraid of being thought of as ＂looking for sensation only＂, afraid that their classmates would laugh at them, worried of being judged as arrogant or pretentious, did not want to be considered stupid, and wondered if they could produce qualified questions. Teachers believed that fear of asking questions is part of the Indonesian students＇ culture. The research team agreed upon the way to handle the problem--by respect and encouragement procedure. The first session implementing the procedure was not successful enough in raising the students＇ self-confidence. Though students had already started to address some questions of this stage, their behaviors did not seem to be improved. They were still afraid, doubtful and unhappy with questioning, which were the signs of lacking of confidence. However, the next cycle was in general a success. The students＇ questions increased considerably. They looked more enthusiastic, passionate and happier in response to teachers＇ invitation to inquire, showing that their self-confidence for asking questions has developed.

New Ideas on Teaching Translation

With the rapid development of the society, some new questions of how to teach translation more scientifically have been put forward to the traditional translation teaching in the new century, which is characterized with high informationization and rapid development of science and technology. This paper aims at a general analysis of the characteristics of the modem society and its impact on translation teaching. Meanwhile, this paper provides the translation teachers with some teaching methods and concepts. Finally, this paper points out that translation teachers must take the characteristcs of the modem society in the new century into consideration, and tries to follow some new ideas when teaching translation so as to adapt to the social changes and achieve the goal of translation teaching in the universities.

A Research on College English Network Teaching Resources Integration and Utilization in Big Data Era

Based on the background of ＂big-data-blowout＂, this thesis is about research on college English network teaching resources integration and utilization confronted with the chance of ＂data value, the data assets and data say＂, analyzing the inevitable challenge of ＂competition, digital divide and data privacy＂, discussing that the researchers should hold big data thinking of ＂peaks of road ＆ dances with wolves ＆ be interdependent＂, emphasizing the improvement from college English teacher＇s modem education technical information literacy[1] and putting forward to resource integration and utilization strategy in the era of big data.

Response of Slovene Informatics Teachers to the EUCIP On-line Course

In the paper, the authors present their experience and results related to the design and management of the on-line course ＂Development of e-learning resources based on the EUCIP （The European Certification of Informatics Professionals） certification scheme＂, which was organized under the auspices of the international Leonardo da Vinci project Sloop2desc （Sharing learning objects in an open perspective for development of European skills and competences）. The course was primarily aimed at teachers of informatics. Out of 64 participants that applied for the course, slightly less than 50% managed to reach the last course module. In line with other research, the authors＇ experience showed that in order to minimize participants＇ drop-out rate, a sustained communication flow between tutors and participants was necessary and specific assignments had to be provided by the tutors, along with guidance. The authors expect the participants who successfully finished the on-line course to become a some kind of ambassadors for the introduction of the EUCIP scheme in Slovenia.

Teachers＇ Concerns and Solutions Towards The Implementation of Digital Storytelling in Teaching English in ESL Classroom in Asian Countries

We are living in the era of Information Technology where students have a lot exposure to the state-of-the-art devices and softwares. The remarkable revolutions in interactivity and multimedia materials together with countless emerging technologies have also enabled the conception of digital storytelling. However, it has not been widely used in many developing countries such as Vietnam. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to conduct an investigation into the history of digital storytelling, the necessary facilities and how it is being used educationally in the classroom so that teachers in developing countries can widely apply digital storytelling in teaching. This paper also raises students＇ awareness towards using technology in their study, which will make an important breakthrough in teaching and learning English in Vietnam.

Child Upbringing and Delinquency： Implication for Societal Development in Nigeria

This paper investigated the influence of parental child upbringing styles and juvenile delinquency and the implication for societal development. A total number of 35 female and male delinquent inmates of Children Correctional Centre in Cross River State and 35 female and male non-delinquents from a normal school aged from 12 years to 17 years took part in the study. The Child Rearing Questionnaire （CRQ） designed by the researcher was used for data collection. Two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Chi-square was used in testing the study hypotheses at .05 level of significance. The result of the data analysis showed that parental child-rearing style has a significant influence on the three aspects of dishonest behaviour, namely lying, stealing, and truancy, and parents＇ bonding with their children is also significant. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that parents should adopt more of authoritative child upbringing styles. Parents are expected to guide and modify the behaviour of their children to conform with the acceptable behaviours in society as well as participate in activities aimed at preventing crime or disorder being committed by their children.

基于Web的软件工程网络教学系统的设计与实现

随着因特网与校园网普及与推广,网络在教学中的作用越来越明显,它摆脱了传统教育中时间、地点等条件的约束,能够有效的利用多种资源,有利于学生的自主学习,各大高校纷纷选择通过网络实现教学资源的建设于共享,本文基于此,采用B/S三层结构模式,及基于Web的数据库编程技术构建了基于Web的软件工程网络教学系统,并在WindowsXP环境下研究了系统的实现。

Teachers’ Stated Beliefs About Focus on Form and Their Classroom Practice: A Comparison

According to Noticing Hypothesis, focus on form instruction is in nature an efficient approach to redirecting learner attention during input processing to linguistic elements both within and across utterances. This study examined the relationship between three teachers’ stated beliefs about focus on form and their classroom practice in intermediate EFL classes through classroom observations and interviews. The findings suggest that a tenuous relationship between the teachers’ stated beliefs and classroom practice regarding focus on form, which is implicational to EFL teacher professional development.

作者运用案例分析法对中学英语教师马老师的教师信念与教学实践进行了颇具深度的分析与探讨。作者结合丰富的第一手资料描述了马老师是如何在她所处的特殊教学环境下与新理念、新大纲、新教材、新教法等进行磨合,并如何克服现实环境中资源不足、教考矛盾等困难,进而做出恰当的教学决策的,为我们勾勒出一幅丰富多彩的教师教法立体图。作者指出,定型观念认为中国英语教师教法陈旧不变的看法是片面的,事实上,中国英语教师对于教学改革是持积极与开放的态度,但由于受到诸多内外因素的影响和限制,他们的教法变革是渐进的,讲求实效的。

A Study of Ethnic Mongolian University EFL Teachers’ Beliefs and Decision Making

本研究采用定性(访谈和课堂观察)和定量(问卷调查)结合的研究方法,从90名受试中选取了3名蒙古族大学英语教师作为研究对象,探究特定文化背景下的蒙古族大学英语教师的教学信念与课堂决策的关系。定量研究结果发现:1)蒙古族大学英语教师的教学信念具有传统与现代相结合的特征,有些信念值得我们进一步的深入探究;2)教师的课堂决策受到他们学习经历、教学经历、培训经历和个人经历的影响;定性研究结果发现:1)教师报告的信念与课堂决策基本一致;2)教师"所倡导的理论"与他们"所采用的理论"之间有差异;3) 在这些教师的信念中,语言与文化是一个重复出现的主题。本研究结果表明蒙古族大学英语教师的教学信念与特定的民族文化交织在一起,对课堂决策产生了深远影响。

Teachers' Self-Development in Applying Information Communication Technology

This paper reports a case study of my self-development in applying Information Communication Technology （ICT） to teaching. I analyzed my own growth from three perspectives： technical confidence and competence, pedagogical development and self-efficacy. Classroom observation, interviews, reflective journals and questionnaires were used to explore how professional self-development occurred when I changed my teaching belief in teaching, and how I understood the development as a practicing teacher in learning by teaching. I participated in various projects based on action research in order to meet the challenges of the teaching reform in the new era. The results indicate that teachers can develop their informational quality and professional competence in applying ICT in teaching.
