作为奠定“美国教育的基础”的四大教育哲学流派之一,巴格莱的要素主义早已为海内外教育学人熟知。然而,这个“要素主义创始人”的标签也极大地冲淡乃至遮蔽了他为改善美国教师教育所做出的理论贡献。在供职哥伦比亚大学师范学院之前,... 作为奠定“美国教育的基础”的四大教育哲学流派之一,巴格莱的要素主义早已为海内外教育学人熟知。然而,这个“要素主义创始人”的标签也极大地冲淡乃至遮蔽了他为改善美国教师教育所做出的理论贡献。在供职哥伦比亚大学师范学院之前,在20世纪三四十年代美国“师范学校”向“教师学院”(师范学院)转型升级的背景下,巴格莱就在有关教师培养规格的“学术性”(学科知识基础)、“专业性”(教学实践能力)抑或“社会性”(响应社会需求)论争过程中,以培养作为合取概念的“教师—学者”为目标建构了一套教师教育的知识体系。事实上,我国教师教育事业在20世纪末前后完成师范院校升级转型的过程中,不仅曾经遭遇并一直存在着类似的困扰,而且近年来还呈现出显著的“以学科定义专业”抑或“以学科取代专业”的“去专业化”倾向。它不仅极大地“窄化”和“误导”了广大教师对自身工作的“专业”理解,而且在实践上也进一步“固化”和“加剧”了广大教师“教书匠”的职能形象。回顾巴格莱的教师教育哲学,不仅有助于澄清我们对教师专业属性问题上的诸多困惑与误区,而且能够为改进中国教师教育方案和重塑教师工作的专业内涵和职业形象提供重要理论启迪。 展开更多

Case study research investigated the launching of an innovative Live Journal, as part of a professional social network, during international conference held in Israel on the subject of teacher training. Research literature notes various publications used to record research and academic materials, but talks less about tools accompanying academic conferences. As far as could be ascertained no online "live journal" has served the needs of a professional conference. To understand the process and contribution of the Live Journal, qualitative study was chosen, using categorical analysis to interpret materials uploaded by participants on the journal. Additionally, in-depth interviews exposed participants' voices and interpretations. The research aimed to identify factors encouraging or hindering the initiative's success, patterns of participation, participants' characteristics, writing styles and incumbent difficulties and aimed to present a model for optimal operation of the Live Journal. Findings indicate essential components for the journal's success include: participants, technology and marketing, noting the importance of each component and their correlation with other components. The journal's potential to assist construction of a professional community, and act as an impetus for professional development and familiarity with other professionals in the field indicates the importance of the journal and constitutes the key for success. 展开更多

Education for Consumer Citizenship in Greece: Teaching Student Teachers and High School Students

In the frame of the Greek educational system, education for consumer citizenship is provided to thirteen-year-old students who attend courses on home economics in junior high school. Students' training is focused, among others, on their acquaintance with the notion and the basic principles of consumption, primarily within the frame of family running, and, secondly, in the frame of narrower or broader social settings. Students are consequently expected to actively develop styles of mature consuming behaviour in family, school, and society. In the Faculty of Home Economics and Ecology at Harokopio University of Athens, student teachers attend special courses on consumer citizenship are systematically trained to use effectively alternative instructional strategies during the teaching of subject units that refer to consumer citizenship. The present study aims at presenting, firstly, how Greek student teachers are trained through University Syllabus and Practicum in order to be qualified as educators for consumer citizenship, and, secondly, how they diffuse this specific knowledge to their students during their years of in-class service. In addition, the study examines the career satisfaction of the graduates of home economics and ecology at Harokopio University of Athens. The result of the present study showed that the great majority of graduates were promptly appointed as teachers to Greek high schools, and today they are considered to play a major role in the conveyance of the education for consumer citizenship's principles in Greek society, since home economics is the only junior high school subject that promotes and develops consumer awareness in Greek secondary education. 展开更多

With the wide spread of English in the global context, scholars increasingly call for the reshaping of English education towards teaching English as an international language. One oft-mentioned proposal is to increase students' exposure to more English varieties, in particular the variety of English used in their country or region. Against this backdrop, this study investigated the attitudes of Chinese university students and teachers towards China English (CE), an emerging variety in China and the ideological underpinnings beneath their attitudinal responses. In the study, 33 English teachers and 31 students were asked to first evaluate the understandability and acceptability of CE features that are identified in literature and then provide reasons justifying their choices in a questionnaire survey. Results show that both teacher and student participants were reluctant to accept CE as a legitimate variety but their attitudes diverged as regards specific CE features. The in-depth exploration of their justifications revealed that native speaker English ideology, Chinglish stigma and the communicativeness of CE to the outside world were their major concerns in evaluating CE. Findings in this study have implications for educators who attempt to localize English language teaching. 展开更多

However, the author argues that learners can hardly become autonomous automatically without any help from their teachers. In other words, attention should also be focused on teachers. It is worthwhile to explore the relationship between English teaching materials and teacher autonomy, for materials and teachers are two important elements in language teaching. This paper begins by clarifying the relationship between ELT materials and teachers and introducing the concepts of teacher autonomy and learner autonomy. The paper presents that teacher autonomy presupposes learner autonomy and effective use of materials can foster teacher autonomy. Approaches to fostering teacher autonomy in the process of using teaching materials are also included. 展开更多

I then present an overview of current perspectives on the relationship between teacher autonomy and learner autonomy. This is illustrated through a discussion of the literature about teachers' responsibility and capacity to support learner autonomy. Developing learner autonomy (LA) requires a shift of control from teachers to students. This development also relates to teacher autonomy (TA), which requires school managers to relinquish some degree of their own... Developing learner autonomy (LA) requires a shift of control from teachers to students. This development also relates to teacher autonomy (TA), which requires school managers to relinquish some degree of their own autonomy (MA) to teachers. Thus, a problem arises: how can the three levels of control-shifts co-exist and survive in harmony, and ideally, thrive each in its own way? Based on a recent case study, this paper aims to explore the complexity of the dynamic interaction between these three types of autonomy within an educational hierarchy. The study was conducted in a Chinese secondary school which was promoting whole-person development through a comprehensive innovation project. The participants comprised nine English teachers, the executive director, and the principal. Data collection methods included interviews, observations, and post-lesson discussions. Three issues are addressed in this paper: the principal's perceptions of LA, a classroom instruction model to cultivate LA, and a teacher training scheme to facilitate TA. The findings display a complex picture of these issues, and imply the importance of a genuine, shared understanding of the nature of autonomy and the need to carefully ensure the optimal balance among the three types of autonomy in the design and implementation of curriculum innovations. 展开更多
